Webber vs Alonso for the title

Alan Henry
The F1 championship battle moved into its acutely psychological phase on Sunday with Mark Webber going into the mandatory mid-season cost-saving factory ‘lock down’ on top of the world with four wins to his credit, twice the personal tally achieved so far by Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel or either Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button.

Webber drove a simply storming race to win in Hungary while his young Red Bull team-mate Vettel had any prospect of victory defused by a drive-through penalty imposed by dropping too far behind the safety car when it was deployed to clear debris from the track in the opening stages of the contest.

Vettel blamed his drive-through on the fact that he had suffered a glitch with his radio and had been ‘sleeping’ when the safety car came in. “It would have been a walk in the park without that,” he said wryly.

For his part, Webber admitted: “It was a bit of a gift for me today, but I haven’t had many so I will take it.” Ultimately Vettel may have more instinctive genius flowing from his finger tips than Webber, but the rugged Australian seems to get better with every racing mile which passes beneath the wheel of his Red Bull RB6.

He also has the innate toughness to deal with any mental mind games and could well parlay his modest four point championship lead over Lewis Hamilton into a title winning advantage when the teams re-convene for action at Spa at the end of the month.

Yet making an accurate call as to just how this title battle will ultimate unfold remains tantalisingly uncertain.

Alonso’s second place for Ferrari in Hungary keeps the twice champion still strongly in play while McLaren will assuredly recover from their dismal trip to Budapest which saw Hamilton succumb to a failed gearbox bearing and Jenson Button trail home a disappointed eighth.

So who will it be in the end? My money’s on a shoot-out between Webber and Alonso over the final three or four races. But I’m not bold enough to narrow the field to just one!

With the current points system its too close to call, which is a good thing....roll on the rest of the season.

However if the safety car had not been deployed the race would of been a procession.

Broughster August 2, 2010 12:20 PM

Agreed Latebreaker. This has happened a few times this season. Think how boring the Turkish Grand Prix would have been without the Red Bull crash...

if its a shoot out between Webber and Alonso I fear Webber could loose out due to his team not throwing all behind him, whereas we have already seen Ferrari commit to the Spaniard.

But I very much doubt its going to go that way, I still see the Brits having a big say in the championshio as well as Vettel.

I'm in two minds on a winner I would like. For me either the Mcclaren Drivers but pref Hamilton or Webber. It would be very nice to see Webber win it just for all the stick he has had to take.

I hope it's either Alonso or Webber, but it could go to any of the top 5, although, I think Button is the least likely winner.

Alonso and Vettel have not looked good this season with their toddler tantrums at some of the races so I'd like to see the guys that have just got on with their jobs do the winning. Webber has really gone up in my book so I'm happy with him or one of the Brits! Look back at some of the best races in the past to see what a real racer does when things don't quite go to plan...

After a German GP to forget, we return to the races  distorted in the recent years by the arbitrary decisions of the FIA. Bad ...

Ban the pit stops!

hamilton has the experience to win again, but webber is taking no prisoners, and should win, unless he bottles it.

AlexF512 August 3, 2010 9:01 AM

@ Knucklehead - totally agree. Vettel and Alonso are the worst of prima donnas who should make their driving do the talking. They are shameless, egotistical pr*cks.

It would be great to see Webber, Hamilton or Button take the championship.

@AlexF512 - totally agree too!  I'm backing Anyone-but-Alonso for the title after his appalling display of "sportsmanship" this year.

Pistachio August 3, 2010 11:20 AM

Please let it be Webber, as I couldn't stand Alonso winning then moaning about how it should have had this and that  and he was in my way blaaaaaaablaaaaahzzzzzzzzzzzz

Peter Cavellini August 3, 2010 6:47 PM

And how ae we going to get to this scenario?, we can't have flexible rules can we?, personally i think it's a three horse race, you have to include Vittel because he's supposed to win it, right?right?, it cars for circuits, high downforce circuit that's a 1,2 Red Bull, low downforce high speed circuit, that's ALONSO then, never mind whose going to win tht title, where's Webber going to be next year?, and Button for that matter?.

Peter Cavellini August 5, 2010 6:19 PM

Who cares anymore!, media have scraped this carcus to the bone, there are no more tit bits, yes what's going on isn't motor racing, but, the press and the blogs about have really taken the shine of it.If the press stopped digging up unrelated facts and political F1motor racing would be exciting, i'll tell you what, i find tin-top racing more interesting now, just shows you how desparate you can get.
