Don't forget the red button

Steve Sutcliffe
I’m not sure how many of you Autocar readers/viewers/users are actually interested in F1, or whether you even bother to tune in to the BBC’s red button coverage of the three practice sessions before each race.

But if you’re remotely keen on the sport and have the time to watch it on the red button – you should – because it is often far more informative and/or entertaining than the commentary during the race itself.

And the coverage of practice for this weekend’s German GP at Hockenheim has been especially excellent because, out of nowhere, the team’s regular commentators – Anthony Davidson and David Croft – have been joined by “resting” HRT driver Karun Chandhok – who seems absolutely superb as a pundit.

So far Chandhok sounds like he has been in the commentators box for decades. He comes across as being comfortable, knowledgeable, smart and inherently interesting to listen to.

And he clearly gets on extremely well with his co-hosts. Even though he’s done just two sessions in the booth, you get the distinct impression that if it doesn’t turn out for Chandhok on the track, there is a very obvious career-in-waiting for him in broadcasting.

Which is probably not what he wants to hear right now, but in years to come, you never know…

I agree Karun was excellent. I have the practice on in the background while trying to work. It was particularly distracting today with all the offs on the wet track.

The coverage of practice by the BBC is excellent, as is Crofts and Davidsons commentary.

Agree with that too. When I first switched it on I wasn't sure who he was. Couldn't pin the accent down and assumed it was someone Welsh! Then i realised it was Chandhok. He was great. Really funny too.

Out of interest, has there ever been an Welsh driver in F1? Can't think of any off hand.

The only Welsh F1 driver I know of was Tom Pryce. Apparently he was a promising driver before being killed in an F1 accident.

I agree about Chandocks accent. He reminds me of when my wife tries to do an Indian accent, she usually sounds Welsh. I can tell her now that she was spot on after all.

Wasn't poor Tom Pryce Welsh?

Sorry - bad timing with my reply!

Tom Pryces accident was nasty and while it is available on Youtube, it's not something I'd like to see again.

i reccomend am going to try watching the main bbc1 feed on my tv, listen to the radio 5 live commentary on radio.

and the new feature of the BBC is the driver tracker feed from FOM. which is a live feed of the track layout showing in graphical form where all the drivers are on the track in real time. if you have a good internet connection you can have this in one window and the onboard live feed in another window. or if you have 2 televisions....

Church is a fine commentator and I've heard Kurum on a couple of othe things and he's good. Very good on a part of the MOTOGP that he was talking to the comenty guys.

But for the life of me I cant listen to Ant Davison.
