Todt steers F1 into tranquil waters

Alan Henry
Behind the scenes in F1 there are definite signs that the sport is moving into more tranquil waters under the stewardship of new FIA president Jean Todt.

Whatever one thought of Max Mosley, his predecessor in this exacting role, his was always going to be a tough act to follow for the Frenchman who was boss of the Ferrari F1 team for so many glorious years.

First signs are that Todt is proving to be clear-sighted and measured. He clearly appreciates the dilemma faced by the new teams in F1 as they face the singular challenge of getting up to a competitive speed, but by the same token he believes that the 107 per cent qualifying cut-off should be re-introduced to the sport in a bid to put competitors under a realistic degree of pressure which is commensurate with the status of the F1 business as a whole. In that respect there are surely few in the paddock who believe he is mistaken in his reasoning.

There is nothing like intense pressure to stimulate a competitor into raising the standard of its game and the starkness of being consigned to the list under the heading ‘DNQ’ is humiliating to the point where it challenges your very presence in the paddock.

The other thing one most applaud the governing body for is the initiative whereby retired F1 drivers will be drafted in as guest stewards during the course of the season. Alain Prost filled the role at Bahrain and we, amongst others, we will be seeing Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell acting in this crucial advisory capacity later in the year.

Wise hands giving a gentle touch to the tiller in potentially difficult situations will be a positive development indeed.

ex racing drivers as guest stewards. What a job, going to exotic places doing a reletively very easy job, and probably getting paid good money. Alright for some.

If the season continues like it did at Bahrain....he will need to supply fans with travel cushions.....I hope its gets better once the drivers learn how to drive in these new conditions.

Be honest with me; is that it?

Any chance Mr Todt can muster up some excitement as well.  The whole sport is being sanitised in the name of health and safety and avoiding law suits.

He will probably introduce rolling starts behind the safety car so no one stalls and gets hurt on the grid!

Come on Mr Todt, given the drivers this year, it was looking to be a good championship, but the new rules have screwed it.

You can't have close racing if most of the grip is aero.

Give the cars the fat slicks from the 80's to give them mechanical grip, next year reduce aero, give them a free engine formula, but limited race fuel. Perhaps bring turbo engines back, as they are becoming more popular in road cars.

Bring back re-fuelling to give another variable in the race.

If these chnages take place, and are then kept, perhaps we can have races where the cars can overtake each other.

Tranquil - Free from agitation or disturbance; calm, serene, placid, quiet, peaceful, Bahrain - revised OED

I think a spinkler system should be mounted around the circuit, then at random periods during the race they will be turned on...to give us that extra variable and added spice.

Im a big F1 fan, but in recent years the only exciting races were when rain was involved.

F1 isn't in calmer waters right now. It's in irons.

Have been waiting all winter for the new season. Fell asleep during the race. If the rest is of the same standard at least I'll be refreshed.
