Good news for Lewis Hamilton - bad news for everyone else

Steve Sutcliffe
There are two bits of news concerning Lewis Hamilton that will have sent shudders along the F1 pitlane this week.

The first was the time Lewis set in his McLaren during F1’s last official test session at Barcelona; he was quickest out of all 23 drivers, with a time of 1min 20.472sec, fractionally ahead of Mark Webber’s fiendishly rapid looking Red Bull (1min 20.496sec), Felipe Massa’ Ferrari (1min 20.539sec) and Adrian Sutil in the Force India (1min 20.611sec).

Intriguingly, Nico Rosberg managed to out-pace Michael Schumacher in his Mercedes, just, although they didn’t actually run on the same day, so we still don’t know for sure how close to Schuey Rosberg will get.

Hamilton seeks new F1 manager

The second piece of news concerning Lewis Hamilton will, if anything, be even more significant to the rest of the grid, you suspect, because Lewis has announced that he will no longer be managed by his Dad. Hamilton senior is leaving the partnership, it seems, to grow his various other business interests. As a result this will allow Lewis to have his Dad “just as my Dad” he told Autosport. “We always did business things, not father and son things” said Lewis.

God help the rest of the F1 grid this year if Lewis lands himself a savvy manager (you wouldn’t bet against it, perhaps Flavio Briatore might be interested…) and with Lewis claiming to be “in the best place I’ve ever been in my life” emotionally.

Roll on Mother’s Day, otherwise known as 14 March.

Is this Autocar or Hello?

How is the loss of Hamilton Snr bad news for the rest of the grid?  Lewis is under a long term contract already and does not need a manager at the moment.

A bit too much like Hello, me thinks. Anyway, this is good news if it means that the previously assumed superiority of Michael Schumacher is not quite so superior. With good management behind him, the Championship must be within his grasp again.

Who cares?

Should Hamilton get too far ahead, he'll just be disqualified for something or other.

Schumacher coming back to F1 is a cash cow waiting to be milked and normal service is about to be resumed albeit under the pretence, for as long as it's required, of apparent 'competition'.

It's a mugs game.

If you think this was bad dad, you want to read the actual interview.

The rumours are that Mika Hakkinen is on the cards to take over as Hamilton's manager.

The biggest issue that the McLaren driver has to deal with at the moment, however, is the disputed legality of the MP4-25's rear wing and bodywork, which, it is claimed by Christian Horner, may provide the car with a means of relieving unwanted drag and increasing straight-line speed.

Apparently the FIA has been asked by both Red Bull and Ferrari whether or not the design conforms to the regulations.

Further proof that Autocar racing coverage including F1 is weak and it always has been.  Stick to what you are best at Autocar which is roadcars and stop F1 coverage in particular.

What a pointless article.

I think LEWIS will be even more eager to get ahead of his team-mate, in particular & also his rivals. He looks to have regained his confidence & will easily fight for the title. Let's wait and watch. He also has a great car this time. Hope he wins.

Why does everyone rave on about Hamilton?, we all know that if the cars crap like the start of last year he'll be an also ran, none of the teams know for sure how the car will go on race weekend, all the testing etc does is become a systems check, it's Sunday on the grid which decides.

The other drivers don't seem to be too worried by either development as far as I can tell - lap times are very much dependent on fuel load, tyre compound and tyre condition, so the fact that Lewis was 0.1 seconds quicker than Felipe is not going to give Ferrari sleepless nights, for example. McLaren have also stated that they'll be taking Lewis' management in-house for the foreseeable future, so again that's not exactly earth-moving. I'm all for generating interest in the opening race, but neither of these seem that significant on balance.

I hope one thing : that the FIA will be neutral with Lewis Hamilton (or Mc Laren?) in 2010.

One thing Lewis Hamilton does not lack is confidence...helps when one is requested to explain themselves to the Stewards.

Is SS paid to write blogs like this?

I agree, leave F1 to Autosport etc

It would be dangerous to read too much into the testing times with so many variables being assessed.
