Looking for chinks in an upbeat Schuey's armour

Alan Henry
Michael Schumacher’s buoyant confidence about the Mercedes team’s prospects for the upcoming F1 world championship season spilled over this week, to the point where the 41-year old predicted that the former Brawn squad would be in a position to challenge for the world championship in 2010.

Which, translated, means that he thinks he will be able to bid for an amazing eighth title crown.

Schuey crash odds put at 40/1

Schumacher is certainly cast in the role of F1’s Peter Pan, although rather than being the little boy who never grew up, he is more the young man who never grew old. It’s not just his motivation which seems quite extraordinary, but the fact that he has kept himself fit and well-toned throughout three years of retirement out of the F1 game.

Looking for weak points in the Schumacher psyche may be a fruitless effort. But I was interested to hear from a good friend that the legendary Mario Andretti, having won the 1978 world championship at the age of 38, was aware as he went into his forties that it took slightly longer to recover to peak form for consecutive races.

With four back-to-back pairings on the 2010 grand prix calendar, should this offer a ray of hope that Schumacher could leave an unexpected Achilles heel uncovered?

Possible, but most improbable. Michael is determined to race for three more seasons, and possibly beyond. But Alonso, Hamilton, Button and Kubica will all be watching closely to see if there is so much as a smattering of vulnerability from the ‘Old Man.’

And when it comes to wheel-to-wheel combat it will be heart-stopping to see precisely who backs out first.

Bring it on!

I wouldn't be too worried about my age if I was Schumacher.  Back in '78 sport science was in its infancy so Andretti was already physically more aged than Schumacher is now.  Also there are many sports stars who undertake physically demanding sports that are as good now as they were then.  One that springs to mind is Kelly Slater of Surfing fame.  He is 38, still competing at the highest level, has won 9 world championships (2008 his most recent), and surfing in BIG waves certainly puts a strain on the body!

Even now Kelly Slater is the one all the young guns want to beat, and it is the same with Schumacher.

Love him or hate him, it will be good to enjoy a master at work, AND too watch all the youngsters push themselves to the max to prove themselves against the statistically greatest driver of all time.  Alonso, Hamilton, Mass and Button will all want to be beating Schumacher the most, not each other!

Anyway I reckon Vettel will surprise all the most!

Surely in F1 circles this is the real topic at the moment?:

'Nick Fry leaves Mercedes GP' - as reported yesterday by pitpass.com

Today the story's being denied.

With your F1 contacts, what's going on? Has there been a putsch at Mercedes by Haug and Aabar? Looks like it. What do you know?

God i hope he has gone! he is such a grinning, lying little poo! i am a very placid person, but whenever he is on screen (even if he isn't speaking) i want to put my fist through my TV!!!!!

Schumachers only chink will be a re-occuring neck complaint from his bike injury.  I would have thought he is probably fitter than all of the rookies who will also find the schedule a shock to their systems.

I think the real weak link will be when he shunted off the track by the likes of Kobayashi who won't give a t*ss for who he is and he will suddenly have a reality check.

Can't wait to see what Kobayashi can do as he looks like the exciting one to watch, especially as the Sauber looks quite handy.

Age if anything will increase his stamina. If he still has the speed of reaction, then it will be business as usual.

Business as usual for Schumacher means that both his track speed and his sportmanship will be extraordinary, though regretably at opposite ends of the scale.

Of course if he was British and less cocky I would categorise his sometimes less than gentlemanly behavior as commitment.

I hope sorry I mean fear that his neck injury will play up.

This column vacillates wildly between a desperate obsession with deluded and feeble-minded sniping and a slightly less desperate obsession with deluded and feeble-minded sniping.

The latest diatribe is relatively low level, since no matter how much the distorted view of Schumacher, held by the petulant and biased, makes them hate him, it's impossible to find anything of any substance with which to knock him.

As usual, it's left to everyone else to add the meat to this bubbling, insipid and cloudy broth, and this time Matt's got it spot on. Kobayashi is going to be brilliant to watch; complete bloody nut-job that he is.

What about the cheating 94-97-2006 ?.

VirginPower February 16, 2010 7:37 PM

There wasn't any.

Driving Damon off the road, trying to wipe out Jaques Villnneuve (in Spain?) accidentally crashing into a barrier at Monaco. I still think he's great though and I hope he wins.

VirginPower February 17, 2010 5:57 PM

Whether careful driving and consistent finishes will outweigh youthful exuberance remains to be seen. Its the second part of the season when that neck injury might haunt him is the great unknown. Will he  have the drive considering he already has the money/fame? No doubt he will want to prove himself at the start both to the faith the team will have and to him personally. No matter what, lots more Germans will be at all the tracks this year. I can only hope that Ferrari strike Gold this season and make it a season that rewards the fans with something worth the track ticket prices and continual TV fees that underpin the sport.
