Lotus F1 - an icon returns

Mark Tisshaw
Whatever they may say, there’s a great deal of expectation on the shoulders of the ‘new’ Lotus Formula One team. For this team carries the name of the second most successful 'manufacturer' team in the sport’s history.

Colin Chapman’s team from Hethel, winning seven constructor and six driver world championships, dominated the 1960s and 1970s. But the core of the team was ripped out following Chapman’s death in 1982 and Team Lotus suffered a slow and painful demise before finally being put out of its misery at the end of 1994.

Lotus F1 car launched

Fast forward 16 years and Lotus has become the second of F1’s four new teams to launch its 2010 cars and its entry seems the most credible. Question marks remain over Campos’s and USF1’s ability to make the grid, and Virgin’s CFD-designed car seems worryingly off the pace, not to mention suffering front wing failure in Jerez yesterday. And then there’s the mysterious Serbians Stefan GP waiting in the wings.

Lotus’s driver line-up resembles that of a strong mid-field team. Heikki Kovalinen and Jarno Trulli are both race winners and can be devastatingly quick, although doubts still remain over their pace over a full race distance.

Lotus has also had the benefit of designing its car in a wind tunnel and seems to have some serious financial backing from Proton and the Malaysian government, as well as team owner Tony Fernandes of Air Asia fame – a man also being linked with a takeover of practically every football club in the country.

Mike Gascoyne should provide the team with the kind of strong, individual leadership he threatened at Toyota, but was never allowed to make as decisions filtered between Cologne and Japan. He will be an asset to Lotus should he be allowed to get on and run the team without any internal interfering.

British fans love an underdog and Lotus will certainly provide that. If the team (or any of the new teams) score a smattering of points this season, it will be an even greater achievement than Brawn’s title success last year. With the infrastructure Honda left behind and the vast sums thrown by Honda in 2008 at 2009’s car, Brawn was no start-up manufacturer. This year’s lot are.

The romantic feeling surrounding Lotus and an over-reliance on its name and past glories could also be its undoing. Originally, the team is based in an ageing industrial unit in Norfolk – not exactly the McLaren Technology Centre. The exact involvement of Group Lotus also remains a mystery and needs clarifying.

We’ve already got one F1 icon on Bahrain’s grid – a certain Michael Schumacher. But the return of Lotus could be just as big a coup for the sport. Schuey’s not got to be around forever – with the right investment, expectations and leadership Lotus could well be the only one of four new teams to outlast Schumacher’s second coming.

A puzzling piece of writing, can you clarify how you are able to pronounce on the Virgin effort, the car has yet to run in anger against the other teams, in the dry, due to an aero failure. All it's done thus far were installation laps.

theop February 12, 2010 7:53 PM

would love to see them getting a handful of points this season....

Uncle Mellow February 12, 2010 7:59 PM

As a life-long Lotus F1 fan I have mixed feelings about their return. Lotus without Chapman is a bit like Queen without Freddie Mercury. The team may endure , but the magic isn't going to be there.

Phillip McCavitie February 12, 2010 11:10 PM

It's not a Lotus, it's not even a works effort. It's a cynical marketing ploy designed to make us 'like them'.

The outcry that a Malaysian company (Petronas) backed Mercedes has caused a national outcry - this is seen as a Malaysian national team not a Lotus team effort\ and the Petronas backing was seen as part of that.

I'm not buying this as a Lotus, I might change my name to Brad Pitt but it doesn't make me Brad Pitt.........

REALZEUS February 13, 2010 12:08 AM

Surely, Lotus is the 4th and not the 2nd most successful team behind Ferrari (16 Constructors Championships), Williams (9 Titles) and McLaren (8 Titles).

I'm a pessimist, I don't see any of the new teams hanging around for long. When the likes of Toyota, Honda, BMW and Renault find it a financial struggle I don't see how these marginal teams can even begin to compete/survive.

Dave Ryan February 13, 2010 6:15 PM

Phillip McCavitie: I can see what you mean, but given that Proton owns the Lotus car company and that one of its drivers (Jarno Trulli) has been putting the new Evora racing car through its paces, I would say there is still quite a strong connection to the company Colin Chapman built. That may change if they do eventually move to Malaysia (which at the moment I can't see happening - the infrastructure for an F1 team simply doesn't exist over there), but for now I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Richard H February 14, 2010 7:54 AM

The benefit of the doubt will go when they move most of the team to Malaysia?

Thats what the original plan was.

You can't byuy heritage.

dennisthemenance February 14, 2010 11:06 AM

As to how far this Lotus F1 will go, is anybody's guess. They are merely using the Lotus's name & apart from that nothing is Lotus. Proton has taken over Lotus for at least over 10 years now & what have they done to turn around the Company or to make it a more profitable outfit? Nothing! At best all you ever see in some Proton's models a tiny little badge stuck at the rear of the car which says "Handling tuned by Lotus."

Even Petronas being a Malaysian oil conglomerate does not even want to sponsor Lotus. This speak so much about the credibility of the team. They opted for Mercedes F1 team which is far better bet by a mile.

They can't even compete in all the testing allowed by FIA due to lack of spare parts. Their team manager Paul Gascoyne has said " Every team I've ever joined has got on the podium within 20 races of me being there." Just watch this space!!

MattDB February 14, 2010 4:56 PM

It's a shame little credit is given to this Lotus team, with many here doubting they are genuine Lotus.  Well they are in Norfolk for a start, employ a British designer from Norfolk and no doubt most of their engineers are also British.  They are backed by the county of Malaysia and Proton Cars who happen to own the Lotus car company (so what if the finance is far eastern).

Bottom line is this deserves its place and why can't the Lotus name adorn this plucky project, its what the Lotus brand has always been about.

F1 is about names.  Star drivers and teams.  Its part of the romance and pizazz of the sport.  It's what makes us excited to watch.

Finally any remaining doubt this is not a real Lotus team should note that Jarno Trulli is working with Lotus cars to also develop its GT4 Evora race car.  Remember the old Lotus was also synonymous with running F1 and sports cars side by side and here we go, they are at it again, same as the old days!!

@dennisthemenance

"Proton has taken over Lotus for at least over 10 years now

& what have they done to turn around the Company or to make

it a more profitable outfit? Nothing!"

I'm sorry but your quote is just nonsense, Proton brought Lotus in 1994

after years of neglect from GM & "private investors" & since then have

over seen the launch of two of it's must impressive & groundbreaking

cars (Elise & Evora), the engineering dept. have helped engineer cars like

the Nissan GTR, and the companies finances are more solid now than they

have ever been, and with a new Elise & Esprit on the way the future looks

good too, what did the GM era give us? an over weight elan with an iszu

engine,

not entirely convinced of this Lotus efforts but rather watch names like

Lotus than Campos & USF1,

so pay a bit more attention!

Casanova February 15, 2010 1:01 PM

@dennisthemenace

They should get Mike Gascoyne on board, I'm sure he'd do a better job than Paul Gascoigne...

Phillip McCavitie February 16, 2010 5:52 AM

MattDB, this isn't considered a British team in a month of Sundays.

Look up Alex Yoong and his involvement in this team.

MattDB February 16, 2010 9:29 AM

Phillip McCavitie

So that means Williams, McLaren and pretty much every other Breitish team in history is now not British becouse they have employed drivers who are non UK nationals.  By your reconing, Ferrari were once German, then became Finnish for a bit and now they are Spanish (get my drift).  Bottom line is a team is the Nationality of where it is registered in respect of the FIA.  Renault based in the UK are French.  Mercedes  based in the UK are German.  Red Bull based in the UK are Austrian.  Why are all these teams here, because we have the best engineers, designers and components suppliers and if we get rid of the Italians, basically F1 is British!

rallyjim February 16, 2010 4:32 PM

Dennisthemenace, please keep posting. It's great to see clueless clots like you making a complete spanner of yourself. The Paul Gascoyne line was a winner.

By the way, the car was designed by a bunch of mostly British engineers in Cologne who did nothing but eat, sleep and live the work 7 days a week for the last 4 months. The finances might be Malaysian, but it appears the heart and soul is British.
