Why I'll be at Le Mans this June

Andrew Frankel
Busy on the weekend of 12-13 June? You may be now. Jaguar is going back to Le Mans. If like me you’re old enough to remember the Silk Cut Jags tearing up the tarmac back in the days of Group C, news rarely comes better than this.

Yes it will be just a single car and, no, it won’t be competing for outright honours and it’s not even a British let alone a works entry, but do not let that deter you. Here’s why: the car is being entered by American racer Paul Gentilozzi whose team has raced Jaguar XKRs in every Trans-Am championship held from 2003 to date and won every one of them. Moreover he has already signed former Indycar winner Scott Pruett to drive and former F3000 and Le Mans veteran Marc Goossens. This is not a bunch of no-hope dreamers, but one very well financed, professional and prepared team.[/intro]

Jaguar confirms Le Mans return

History is also starting to repeat itself. The last time Jaguar had been away from Le Mans for too long was in the mid 1980s when an American privateer with a highly successful race team decided to enter the race to compete for class honours. And although Bob Tullius’s Group 44 Jaguar XJR-5 failed to realise its full potential, it certainly did enough to gain the undivided attention of Jaguar in the UK. Within two years Jaguar had commissioned Tom Walkinshaw to design, build and race its own car and the rest, including Jaguar’s two most recent Le Mans wins, is history.

Who should fill the third seat in the car? Clearly he needs to be British, super quick, and with Le Mans winning pedigree, ideally in a Jaguar. Both Andy Wallace and Martin Brundle qualify but so too does none other than David Coulthard. It is a fact remembered by too few that back in 1993 DC shared an XJ220 with David Brabham and John Nielsen, winning their class before being excluded for a technical infringement long after the race was over. He has unfinished business in France.

Then again they could put Donald Duck behind the wheel and I’d cross the channel to see it. If you were lucky enough to witness what a Le Mans crowd does when it sees a Jaguar in the pit-lane, you will too.

As fantastic an event it is i think Le Mans, and indeed sportscar racing itself, has lost some of its mojo and that's primarily down to the entrants and the type of cars.

It's great to see privateers fight it our amongst themselves, whether it be in the GT or LMP classes, but what i would love to see are a return to the days when manufacturers fielded works entrants in the top category, 750 - 1000 Bhp machines that were spectacular to watch and with the performance to rival F1 cars at certain circuits, which even included the 3.5 litre NA cars like the XJR-14, 905 and TS010. Sadly, this hasn't happened since the demise of the World Sportscar Championship in the early 1990s.

Instead, what we have now are a 2 or 3 manufacturers at best fielding sports-protoptypes which, while still technically advanced at well over a £1m a pop, are (relatively speaking) limp due to the ACO's rules which greatly reduce performance and actually make the cars look 'slow' and boring on track. And i've seen this for myself.

I'd love to go back to Le Mans and watch sportscar racing again, and i know it's just more than a motor race, but there's nothing on the grid that would attract me.

No Diesel!

I've seen the Peugeot 905 deux years ago on the Le Mans track.

What a wonderful car! Fantastic. The V10 with the best sound for ever (well superior than the F1 V10).

We'll be all together at Le Mans in June.

Deux years mean two years in Le Mans ;-)

Le Mans willl be fantastic, regardless of the entry. Untouched by Bernie, it is still a sporting event. I do agree that it would be nice to see more challengers for overall victory, but as long as the Diesels dominate, that won't happen.

It's still the Greatest Motor Race in the World!!

Not only Jaguar, but also our Nigel and his two sons will be racing, good enough reasons to go and cheer to British greats.

I used to look forward to Le Mans every year, but sadly the "Pistonhead" crowd adopt the English abroad mentality and make me feel ashamed to be British sometimes...

Somebody better tell Mansell.

I went for the first time last year, and it was brilliant.  The noise that the Corvettes make is simply ground-shaking, and the Astons sounded like F1 cars.  Yes the diesels were whisper-quiet, but as a spectacle it was simply incomparable.  Will definitely be there again this year.
