But if driving is so scientific, why do so many drivers come across as a bit thick? (Not you Kris - these columns prove that!) PS Why did Autocar mag call you Chris this week?

JWRC title for Prokop IRC title for Kopecký, Enge and Charouz to take Le Mans series title for Aston and at last Vršecký is defending title against albacete in trucks with Buggyra. What a great season for us. Keep up boys, let the most beatiful flag flutter on the highest pole. And one thing, if MB pull rosberg to Brawn against Barrichelo, i wish Brawn only the worst. Button and Brawn are most overestimated losers on the circuit. Sham and Snail, what a combination. All hail mighty Rubens beating Button whit ride in flames:-). Whit this sharp practices(Ferrari, Renault(whole team of frauds), now Brawn) F1 colud no longer been called motorsport. Deeply worried about Kubica. I Have seen him on irc rally, he is a big friend of Kopecký and great unostentatious guy. No shithead boasting about how many hookers he had in Monte Carlo! True loser this Button! I won´t be proud of this man. But Kris is very good, very fucking good. I have seen him by my place (Zlín, IRC 14days ago) and he was devilishly fast, but was a bit unlucky. Keep going Kris GB needs somene like Colin, I think you can.

100mph in the forest in the fog, or charging through a damp and twisty mountain road with a 500ft drop on one side - that's real talent.

well done Kris!

Personally, I think you must be using a bit more 'seat of pants' than this suggests, as I'm guessing you are always getting caught out by changing conditions, no matter how experienced/good your eyesight?

Full respect, though - a rally driver's ability to cope with all conditions, no matter how tough, is what makes them better drivers than F1 racers in my eyes.

The art really is speed......... If you are not going fast enough then you will not get the weight transfer to effect a good snap change in direction. The other art is knowing when to let the handbrake off, too early and your turn is buggered and too late it is buggered as well.

Speed really is the answer.

But these days in my retirement in France I am snookered anyway as my Xantia has a handbrake on the front wheels and my Defender only has one on the prop-shaft......... A handbrake turn on a shire horse though is something totally different !!

anyway that was interesting. how do u do a fish tale in a front wheel drive car? or a full 360?

rallyfan, I reckon you're doing something wrong - I can usually get a car round, although it helps if the surface is very dirty or slippery.

I also reckon the advent of these pointless electric handbrake buttons means the handbrake turn may be a dying art.

A shame, as used sensibly and in the right place it was a bit of fun. We'll all have to go rallying to do this sort of thing sooner rather than later...

I love rallying and have to say I have always assumed it as frantic in the car as it looks from outside it.

I assume rally cars like Kris's have trick handbrakes?

I've tried a few in quiet places in my road car but not much seems to happen (beyond the handbrake cable feeling spongier afterwards).

Or maybe I've just been doing it wrong...

I am fortunate enough to see Colin drive on several occasions and was always blown away by the commitment that he gave ("if in doubt, flat out") and the speed that he managed to wring out of cars. I have seen Colin driving his Metro 6R4, his Mk2 Escort, a Puma and others and he always looked to be going way faster than anyone else.

Now it looks as though Kris Meeke has got into his stride and is taking the mantra to the full. Will be great to see Kris driving the Escort and all the best to him and Paukl Nagle for the rest of the IRC season.
