Aston's Cygnet splits opinion

Steve Cropley
Aston Martin's new Cygnet was met with slightly uncertain applause at it was unveiled in Geneva this morning.

It's fair to say Aston design director Marek Reichmann has changed everything about the car he easily could - grille, airscoops, lights, badges, colours, body trim and so on - but the car's unmistakable proportions and window graphics still advertise its £10K Toyota roots, too loudly for some.

Aston chairman David Richards reckons it'll sell the way a £3000 Hermes handbag does to rich ladies, but if so, it's going to have to be ladies who don't understand the Toyota range too well.

If you want a car that splits opinion, this is it.

The irony is that in a way it's far more of of an emblem of careless wealth than the big Astons that surround it.

You could say it's a cygnical attempt to lower their average emissions

nicksheele March 2, 2010 11:43 AM

Fin de siècle sh*t, like bust RBS bankers looting billions in bonuses. Country's gone. Mad Max scenario just around corner. Buckle up.

coolboy March 2, 2010 12:13 PM

yes, it'll sell the way a £3000 H&M, Hermes-branded handbag does...

for god sake, get real!

only the idiots will buy this kit, how much was it?

ThwartedEfforts March 2, 2010 12:19 PM

a vastly overpriced piece of tat trading on little beyond the badge on its nose. It'll fit in the Aston range just nicely.

eseaton March 2, 2010 12:57 PM

On the contrary Steve, I would say there has never been a car that less split opinion.

Will86 March 2, 2010 1:18 PM

Actually, I quite like the styling (minus the stupid bonnet vents) and I like the interior too. I don't however like the price and wouldn't be seen dead driving one. It is irrelevant how good this car might be, putting an Aston badge on it was a big mistake.

MrTrilby March 2, 2010 1:23 PM

Why the shock over the price? Didn't Aston used to charge a £50k premium for a re-badged Jaguar XK8?

Lanciaman March 2, 2010 2:43 PM

Well, they picked the right name, didn`t they? The only trouble is, however long you wait it`ll never grow into a swan.

Quattro369 March 2, 2010 3:06 PM

How much will it actually cost?

MattDB March 2, 2010 3:34 PM

Has it got an Aston Martin throttle pedal and brakes?

Just joking, i'm sure the Toyota bits are just fine!!

david RS March 2, 2010 6:11 PM

Worse than the Smart Brabus.

It will please at our small urban snobs of our major cities.

michael knight March 2, 2010 6:37 PM

I'm sure it'll sell well in Dubai, Moscow, Beijing, and possibly London - to to the type of noveau-riche clientele who couldn't give a rat's about heritage or lineage. We're all too car-sensitive on this forum for it to appeal. But companies don't tend to completely risk a new model these days without plentiful targeted research...unless they're reckless..

superstevie March 2, 2010 7:12 PM

david RS, I agree. At least the brabus smart have suspension and engine modifcations to go with the extra spec and astronomical asking price.

I reckon it will be bought by rich aston owning dad's for their son or daughter

fhp11 March 2, 2010 8:33 PM

From what ive seen - opinion isnt split on this car at all. Some people like it (the boss of Aston Martin). Other poeple dont like it (everyone else).

I think peoples opinion on the Cygnet is generally, pretty agreed. A tasteless display of wealth. At least other Aston Martins are good cars, this is just a rebadged Toyota. Lame.

marktobin March 2, 2010 9:47 PM

so, just how stupid do Aston think people are!! Tell me please no-ones gonna pay way over the odds for an Aston badged Toyota!!

(though i suspect there are alot of people out there who will be "seduced" by the badge! the old saying of fools & their money easily parted!!

JackB March 2, 2010 10:46 PM

I don't understand why everyone in this forum blames Aston for this disaster. Thank the European Comission for its idiotic, hoax 'planet-saving' legislature instead.

jl4069 March 3, 2010 6:03 AM

The conceptually blind staff at AC have their fists so far up Aston that it causes them to make claims like half the people love the piglet. Why write this? Why?

Phillip McCavitie March 3, 2010 9:15 AM

Anyone remember the Austin Metro Frazer Tickford?

eseaton March 3, 2010 10:28 AM

I had a dream last night.  Aston Martin are going to do a version of the Hi-Lux next.

They change the badges, floor mats, even the key fob.  Really thorough job.

To continue the avian theme, it will be called the Turkey.

Any ideas for the Dodo?

6th.replicant March 3, 2010 2:29 PM

"Ah fink that it's luvalee, right classy & - wots the word? - yeah, sufisticated, that's it. Can't wait to go shopping in mine down Blue Water/Brent Cross/Cheshire Oaks/Westfield. Do these Martins come in white & can I 'ave those sparkerley silver wheels too?"

Oh dear Aston. What have you done? Just when things were going well. Enzo would be laughing into his pasta!

Los Angeles April 14, 2010 10:37 AM

Not surprisingly, Aston has made the iQ a better looking car than Toyota, even to adding a glass roof (discarded by on Toyota's concept) and ridding it of the claustophobic interior.

That it sells for a vastly inflated price is Aston policy. Their cars are all handsome ... and vastly overpriced. result? Plunging values when driving them from the howroom to the owner' garage.

Even so, I welcome the Cygnet (daft name) an improvemenet on city roads. The guy with the big Aston can leave it at home and use the Cygnet for city runs knowing all the time the rest of us realise he has an Aston in the garge.
