Mercedes F800 has something of the BMW CS about it

Hilton Holloway
Earlier today, the Autocar inbox received a very interesting e-mail from a chap who only identified himself as ‘Chris’.

My guess is that ‘Chris’ is a car designer, because he’s noticed something very intriguing about Mercedes’ latest concept car, pointing out a remarkable resemblance between it’s rear and the rear of the cancelled BMW CS limo.

Although not identical – the Mercedes F800 has clearly developed the basic CS design theme – the look is remarkably similar.

Chris points that Karim Habib, one of the top designers at BMW – he was responsible for both the new 7-series and CS concept – also worked on the new Mercedes.

Habib unexpectedly jumped ship from BMW and joined Mercedes-Benz team last year.

Chris reminds us that Autocar reported this move last March: "Canadian-born Habib will be responsible for the F series cars, the concepts and experimental cars that Mercedes uses to develop its future design themes. Recent F cars include the F700 and F400.

These are cars that will influence not the next generation of Mercedes but the one after that – cars that won’t be on the market for another decade."

Well, it looks as if Habib was loathe to let some of the great ideas that made up the CS concept go to waste…

I might add my own thought, having been reminded of the CS’s impressive rear-end. Picture the E39 5-series, the last model before the Bangle revolution. Now imagine what the 5-series would have looked like, two generations down the non-Bangle line.

Quite a lot like the CS, I’d guess.

"Chris" Bangle?

I agree, it's bloody plagiarism. And, at the end of the day, I'm sure it's BMW and not the individual designer which owns the design. Merc, stop ripping BMW off, you've got (in the C-class) the best looking car you've made in years, the best-looking in its sector. Just develop that look and you won't go far wrong.

Is it still plagiarism when the design came from the same designer but he's wearing a Mercedes cap now instead of a BMW cap?

Surely you hire a designer because you like their ideas, big-picture outlook etc. If you were a designer in the public eye who then got hired by a competitor, deliberately changing your style would be an odd thing for you to do. As the new employer I'd be wanting to know what had happened to the bod I'd hired.

MattDB February 25, 2010 11:14 AM

It's only a concept so don't call the lawyers yet.

We do miss Bangle though.  New BMW's have become very 'conservative' so I don't think Merc is chasing BMW, just BMW have become staid, a bit like Merc really!

I think the resemblance is actually rather slight... It's the exhaust openings that are similar. And both have an XF 'inspired' rear window. But the BMW has a distinct resemblance to a 6-series. And the Merc to the CLS, though with slight resemblances to Audi (lights) and Passat CC (bootlid). The shared designer is a red herring!

These days everything looks like something else ( except for Bangle's grotesque creations).

The back of the new E-class looks a bit Lexus Sonata.

@tonym911

Good designers can and should design products that fit to the brand that is employing them rather than the other way round.

tonym911 February 25, 2010 10:07 PM

A fair point.

I only see a similar "graphic" in the lights and exhaust cut-outs. The surfacing is very different, with the CS being a hatch.

It's inevitable that designers at different companies come up with rear ends that look the same. There are only so many things you can do with 2 lights and some holes.

Honda went as far as changing their US spec Accord early because Hyundai's Sonata arrived about 10 months after the 2004 accord with "The same" back end.

Now, I don't know if the same designer did both of these, but come on.

@ Rover P6 3500s; The mercedes c class is a BMW rip off too, if you have seen both side by side you'll understand what I am talking about.  It started off with the s class (current model), they ripped off BMW interior and gear stick too.

Going back to Chris, the F800 is a CS rip off as expected from MB.  I drive a merc and for sure they are not a complete as they are touted to be.

Ooh hello again Gift - tell me, what is your opinion of the possibility that Mercedes may have plagarised design details from BMW?

No, thought not.......

Anyway, I agree with a lot of the sentiment that MB's design studios have lost their way of late.

MBs these days just seem, well, a bit too bling for my tastes, and overweight too - remember the original SLK - sleek, slinky and retro? Or the superb looking 190- the car that set MB's future design direction for the next decade....or even the original A-Class.

I echo MattDB's comment about missing Chris Bangle - like him or loathe him, he is a true original in the midst of a sea of mediocrity....

Mr_H March 3, 2010 5:58 PM

And yes, I know that Chris Bangle worked for BMW, not MB, before you correct me.....

I have always believed that BMW is very very serious about safety.I love my BMW 7 series car. I feel completely confident that BMW will take care of whatever the problem has been identified and  I feel safe until then.
