First-hand view of the Porsche Cayenne

Chas Hallett
So what’s the new Cayenne like in the metal?

Well if you didn’t like the bluff and aggressive look of the old one there’s little hope that you’re going to think that this one is a beauty either.

New Porsche Cayenne revealed

That said, there’s no doubt that it looks sleeker, sportier and has much tidier and more tapered front and rear ends. And yes it’s a good deal more handsome and more sculptured than the outgoing model. But it’s still a big, bulky car.

Also, just like the new VW Touareg with which it shares a platform, Porsche has made impressive weight savings and engineers say that this has proved dividends in its off-road capability. Even though a lot of off-road hardware has been removed to save this weight.

The real benefit for most customers though is with the interior. With the Panamera saloon Porsche finally proved that it could do classy and luxurious, as well as durable, and the Cayenne continues the theme. In fact, there's now a lot of similarity between the SUV and the saloon. Quality, luxury, and comfort have all been pushed up several notches.

But is it as classy as a Range Rover? It's too close to call.

Yes we do!!!!

this is the most hideous piece of design so far since the dawn of the millennium. The rear end looks like something of a Korean / Chinese design studio, and the front, well thats a catfish. And i presume the brown car is the turbo version, well that looks like a dying catfish in the mud. Honestly, there are better looking Mitsuoka's for Pete's sake. The cars only saving grace is its interior that seems to cocoon the driver with properly appointed luxury. I am not convinced this is how the Cayenne is going to look like.... It is a hoax rite? seriously?

so many Haters on this forum.

nothing positive to say about anything.....

Harry_Boy February 25, 2010 4:07 PM

To the armchair detractors:- Just try one - you'll be impressed, even if you never admit it to anyone...

Lee23404 February 25, 2010 4:26 PM

There's no doubt that (Korean looking rear aside) it's an improvement on the hideous outgoing model but as classy as a Range Rover? - not even close.

Pix26 February 25, 2010 5:01 PM

The back looks a bit closer to home to me - Audi Q7?

ShvsIrns February 26, 2010 6:47 AM

Definitely too many haters/whingers on this forum

Love the new look Cayenne .. loved the old look just the same. It looked more brutish (befitting a 4wd, imo). And definitely more interesting than the origami school of design common with some of the Cayenne's competitiors ... now that is boring and ugly and unimaginitive/unadventurous. A Range Rover classy? <cough> You gotta be joking. But if you want really ugly, the new XJ gets my vote by a long way That's ewww! Great shame that. The Jag management should be shot for putting that into production.

Lee23404 February 26, 2010 9:49 AM

ShvsIrns - you say there are too many haters/whingers on this forum and then start having a go at the RR and Jag XJ. Pot, kettle and black maybe?

ShvsIrns February 26, 2010 10:59 AM

Lee23404 - you do realise by you own standard of assessment (or is that judgement) you are whinging lol

Lee23404 February 26, 2010 11:16 AM

ShvsIrns - No not whinging just pointing out your hypocrisy and double standards.

It's OK to have a go at Jaguars and RR according to you but if you say anything against a Porsche your a whinger - LOL.

ShvsIrns February 26, 2010 12:02 PM

yawn

CH: 'But is it as classy as a Range Rover? It's too close to call'.

Erm, how about about... NO

Dan McNeil v2 February 26, 2010 9:46 PM

As classy as a rat with a gold tooth.

Mr_H February 27, 2010 3:55 PM

Dan McNeil - you made me laugh with your comment - "As classy as a rat with a gold tooth."

.....I couldn't agree more. There'll be a long queue of philandering Premiership footballers outside every Porsche dealer when this ugly beast comes out.

The new cayenne is an improvement on the old one looks wise but its still not exactly pretty!

Off Topic:Why does this gift person want a Long- Term relationship will ALL of the Autocar Bloggers, if you ask me its spam!

Le Chef February 27, 2010 9:34 PM

Fantastic - a big improvement over the old one. Thankfully we've got a big enough country to drive it in and lots of cheap fuel to put in it.

Quattro369 February 28, 2010 10:09 AM

Anyone emailed 'gift' yet.....? ;-)

On the subject of the Cayenne: They have improved it but lets face it. It would have been more of an accomplishment if they had managed to make it uglier.

Call me a hater but this car is for vulgar, image obsessed people with more sense than money. Especially as over half the sales will be the heavy 3.0 diesel model which is the slowest Porsche of the post war era.

SpiritOfSenna March 1, 2010 3:17 PM

I've contacted "gift" and included a photo of myself. She says that she likes my face and will give me her best price, whatever that means.

Here's hoping that I'm onto a winner.
