Toyota FT-86 - what you see is what you'll get

Steve Sutcliffe
On the site today you'll notice a story on the Toyota FT-86 Concept. Since I wrote it various rumours have been doing the rounds on the internet about the validity of the car’s design. According to these rumours “an unofficial source in Japan” has claimed that the final design hasn’t been signed off yet, the insinuation being that the car we photographed bears little true resemblance to the one that will go on sale in 2012.

I was, I admit, a bit shocked by these rumours, having recently spent a day with the car and some of the people responsible for its design. So I started to do some digging, and it now seems that the situation is a wee bit more complicated than it first appeared.

What I can gather, having communicated with numerous official, unofficial sources within and outside Toyota, is this. In 2012 Toyota will definitely launch a rear-wheel-drive coupe that will have an unusually low centre of gravity, and for a target price of less than £20k equivalent to today’s money. But its final production design has indeed not yet been finalised.

However, what I can also tell you is that, unofficially and very much on the QT, Akio Toyoda himself loves the current design just as it is, especially the rear end. He’s also taken particularly keen note of the enthusiastic way in which the FT-86 concept has been received by its critics. And so, basically, it would seem he wants to keep the production car’s design as close as possible to that of the concept, once various aspects have been integrated to make it production friendly; such as pedestrian crash protection etc.

In other words, and despite nothing yet being officially official or otherwise, what you see is what we’ll get.

Which is very good news if you ask me.

I hope not, it's a disaster in construction, how have they managed to make it so heavy?

Vimeous February 19, 2010 10:22 AM

I want one.

Won't be able to afford one of course, the definition of affordable is rather comedy these days, but it's definitely on my wish list!

coolboy February 19, 2010 10:45 AM

for god sake, this car doesn`t have any real proportions!

this looks like another cappucino,coppen,...

this is "I would like to be" car.

who drives that?

kcrally February 19, 2010 11:43 AM

what you will find, is most toyotas' are underpowered, sacrificing performance for engine / transmission reliability. it will be fun, but it wont be fast.

"what you see is what you'll get" . . .  except for the changes that will be made . . . if the car is made . . . which Toyota would like to do . . . but might not . . . although a bigwig says that he likes it a lot . . .

What utter procreating gonads.

I have it from an offical source (my office cleaner) that something incredibly exciting will certainly be happening, sometime, probably soon, perhaps, unless of course it doesn't, in which something even more exciting will happen, possibly.

Mine is bigger than yours.

SpiritOfSenna, so true and sad at the same time. I love the car, but still am afraid it could be redesigned by CALTY (i hate the celica 7 design they did)

I don't understand why people are being so harsh! Sure, 1250kg isn't exactly Caterham-light, but it's got to be practical and cheap (a Caterham is neither), as well as fun. If you made it any lighter, you'd have to push the price up (aluminium ain't as cheap as steel). Personally, I think it looks bloody gorgeous (except from the rear) and I hope it makes it to production in a form as close to this as possible.

beachland2 February 20, 2010 10:15 AM

Can you understand that it's over 100kgs heavier than the last 4 seat Celica? That is not progress.

Zeddy February 20, 2010 10:53 AM

New dash and available for £15k.

I'll accept this as your apology for the current maladies.

Actions speak louder than words, you know.

MattDB February 22, 2010 4:08 PM

Why the fuss that it's heavier than a 20 year old Celica.  Can I remind you that that car had next to no safety in relation to todays cars and used to get lighter as the years rolled on as they used to rust like hell.

Look at the kerb weight of some of our basic family cars and this new Toyota will be acheivement as it will comply with all regulations and be ligher than a current supermini.

Are people expecting it to be made of carbon fibre and aluminium for £20k?  Remember a Ford Focus RS weighs in at nearly 400kg more so all its power advantage is pure waste!

beachland2 February 23, 2010 5:20 PM

20 year old celica? rubbish the last ones were on sale in  2006 new , they were very modern and safe cars. You must be thinking of the celica version before that?

The last celicas do not rust.

jesus...

While I can understand some of the comments made about the design and "heavyness" of this fabulous looking sports car/concept/prototype, no-one has mentioned that this is a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru.

Surely, if the so-called slab-sided designs of most modern cars, (I have to say directed mainly at saloons), is the common feature accepted today, then why is it no negative reviews echo this? Their silohette reflects an idea for aerodynamics, speed, and economy, which if correct allows the same arguement for sports cars.

Both companies have outstanding records for speed and durability, (rallying) and previous shapes proved that a "brick" design can still win.

Given the oportunity to swallow a complete jar of cod liver oil tablets that would let my old frame melt into such a lovely sculpture I'm sure I could feel very much at home driving around at the recommended speed limit with the best.
