Audi A1 looks familiar

Hilton Holloway
With my background in design, I know I really shouldn’t be saying this. But ever since I saw the Audi A1 metroproject concept at the Tokyo show in autumn 2007 I have had a niggling thought in the back of my mind.

There was something about the car’s rather plump, potato-esque, shape that reminded me strongly of another car.

When the pictures of the final production A1 arrived, I couldn’t resist asking the obvious question any longer.

I am the only one who thinks the baby Audi looks remarkably like an Austin Allegro?

There’s something about the short, tubby shape, the sweep of the C-pillar, the amount of bodywork above the front wheel and that deep ‘shoulder’ surface that runs off the front wing and down the side of the car.

Even the Allegro’s side windows seem similar in proportion and shape to the A1’s.

I have met Harris Mann – ‘designer’ of the Allegro – a couple of times. A charming chap, he showed me his original design sketch for the Allegro.

It was a sharp, wedgy, coupe with a narrow nose and rising window line. Unfortunately, what passed for production engineering at BLMC in 1970 saw the management to change its plans, and fit the Allegro with an existing heater and engine, which were too tall to fit under Mann’s sharply-drawn bonnet.

So they simply lifted the bonnet line up until they could accommodate the engine and heater. Rather than pass it back to the design department to try and tidy up the result, the Allegro went into production. Amazingly it was made for a decade, from 1973 until 1983.

As for the A1, it’s roughly based on the Polo, so there seems to be no good reason for its podgy form.

Interestingly, the Audi A1 does have an obtuse BL connection. The concept A1 was called the Metroproject. However BMW, which owns the Metro badge, objected rather strongly to this and Audi had to purge its files and the web of pictures and text that used the ‘metroproject’ name.

And funnily enough, Harris Mann was one of the lead designers on the original Austin Metro…

Even BL's messed-up Allegro looks better than this dumpy Audi.   Mann's original design for the Allegro was very nice.    He also designed the Princess and the TR7.     Some useful info here:

I sorta see that. For me though, its the back that reminds me of something. I keep thinking it the Maestro, but its not that. Something similar. Its the lights that do it.

theonlydt February 12, 2010 10:35 PM

The whole roofline kind of looks like the old Citroen C3 to me, and when the frame is in a different colour to the body worryingly like a C3 pluriel!

Uncle Mellow February 12, 2010 11:04 PM

See what you mean , but no - the A1 is not that bad. I accept that Mann did not intend the Allegro to look so awfull - I always wondered if certain panels were shared with the Marina to save money - but I never really cared for his work . Neither the Princess nor the TR7 looked quite right.

Just wait for the legro special edition....Audi A1 legro..

Old Toad February 13, 2010 6:19 AM

Heh my mum used to have an Allegro which we called an A la grotto it was in a cowpat browny green colour and I remember overloading the roofrack with a load of Oak boards which bent the whole roof in.

Solution lay on back seat press on roof with feet and push . Popped the roof back out nicely and saved me from some serious grief !

Have to say the A1 looks boring alongside the A2 and now Nissan Juke.

Cromwell February 13, 2010 7:19 AM

I think you've been on the Pop Hilton, the A1 looks great to me, at last a desirable grown up rival to the Mini, would love to see a quattro model though!

Richard H February 13, 2010 8:54 AM

There won't be a Quattro version, too heavy.

And there aren't any 4WD Polos.....

jammy_rex February 13, 2010 1:02 PM

I see the connection - that's made me chuckle!  Hmm the dumpy Audi looks pretty... pretty horrendous that is!!!

crashbangwallop February 13, 2010 1:58 PM

take more water with it.

roadtester February 13, 2010 3:31 PM

It looks cr*p. Since the brilliant A2's only problem was being born ten years ahead of its time, the solution is obvious; forget the A1 and revive the A2.

Peter Cavellini February 13, 2010 4:34 PM

SPLASH,anyone?

oaffie February 13, 2010 4:47 PM

This is a ghastly looking car.  Audi design really is the epicentre of vulgarity.

Estate agents and recruitment consultants will be salivating at the thought of this car.

MattDB February 13, 2010 6:20 PM

Anyone for a Seat Ibiza Cupra?

Audi A1 under the skin and will be about £6k cheaper

Ravon February 13, 2010 7:58 PM

I'm always off the beam but the A1's style reminds me of a car I lusted after in my yyouth, a Panhard CT24 !

Mart_J February 13, 2010 9:23 PM

A greater comparison would be the VP Allegro surely. Like the comparison though. Unfortunately the A1 will no doubt be an accomplished car in the flesh bought by boring junior-execs as a 'default' choice (i.e it's an Audi). It is too expensive though. Even a 500 is good value against this jumped up Polo.

noluddite February 13, 2010 9:58 PM

So Manns fantastic design was spoilt by the production engineers? Didn't Mann check that the drivetrain would fit, or was he expecting cash-strapped BL to design a new one which would fit his design? Sounds like either ignorance or arrogance might have played a part in the Allaggro fiasco. PS bet the A1's rear window doesn't pop out when its jacked though.

"PS bet the A1's rear window doesn't pop out when its jacked though."

-----------------

This situation will never arise, because (as any fule no) an Audi is perfect, and will never, ever need to be jacked up.

artill February 13, 2010 10:44 PM

Noluddite

I believe the original brief for Mann was to incorporate the 'A' series from the 1100, 1300, and he designed it to fit, but then at the last minute the board decided to install the much bigger 'E' series OHC engine and its 5 speed box. This didnt fit until the car was inflated to Audi A1 proportions.

Everything comes around again, given enough time.

Many Thanks to Dan McNeil v2 for the Princess/Harris Mann link.

noluddite February 14, 2010 8:20 AM

Thanks Artill. Like the closing line :)

amble February 14, 2010 12:32 PM

Thanks Hilton, you've wrecked the A1 design for me.  Won't be able to look at one now without thinking of an Allegro!

Challenger440 February 14, 2010 6:28 PM

Maybe no quattro version, but there might be an 1750  Equippe... ?!

cyclingheffer February 14, 2010 9:52 PM

Will they make the Audi in lovely Allegro dark brown I wonder . In that colour Allegro's look like pork pies !

Elvisisntdead February 15, 2010 12:01 AM

Another boring cloned car , obviously all us Europeans ( I mean that in a loose format now, with Greece, Spain, Portugal and Irish going  bust)  just want to be dictated into driving these cars.

These manufacturers are making life just like the EU, sad and boring, its time we stop buying these piles of crap, and looking for more individual cars again.  BORING

Mr_H February 15, 2010 12:04 AM

I also have a degree in Industrial Design, and have been bugged by a similar conundrum for years. Was the rear end of the Peugeot 205 also inspired by the Austin Allegro? To be fair to the Aggro, it was, in 1972 seen to be the epitome of modern small car design (in Birmingham at least), and, when compared with the Alfasud and some of the Japanese competition of the time, didn't look too bad (on the outside - the interior was a disaster). Oh sorry, are we still talking about the A1. It's so inconsequential that I'd completely ignored it. What's the point in it again? Oh yes, I remember, upmarket transport for Noddy & Big Ears!

slipslop February 15, 2010 10:33 AM

I bet the allegro had a better ride and probably more space inside.

noluddite February 15, 2010 11:29 AM

Just developing the 'BL production engineers screwed up Manns design' idea a little, I have been digging and have discovered a photo of the original clay model for the All Agggro here. It's not too dissimilar to the final model (and the Audi)... www.aronline.co.uk/index.htm

noluddite February 15, 2010 11:31 AM

Erm, or even here:www.aronline.co.uk/index.htm

Brilliant!  It wasn't just me!   Back when I were a nipper, me and my sis used to giggle at the Allergy.  Of favourite name for it?  Pork Pie Car.  The Maxi was known as Steak and Kidney Pie Car.  Aaargh...memories;)

More boring flotsam surfaces from the sea of mediocrity that is Audi.  How can this company also produce the quite extraordinarily brilliant R8?????

welshwizard February 16, 2010 3:16 PM

I always thought the Alegro was way ahead of its time
