Young, single, urban male? Then here's the Nissan Juke

Hilton Holloway
Are you a young, single, urban male? Then, according to Nissan, you’ll be interested in the Nissan Juke when it goes on sale in September.

I’m currently at a French military base just to the south of Paris, where the Juke has been unveiled for the first time.

Nissan Juke

Nissan Juke revealed

Nissan bosses say they are sure that this highly distinctive 4m-long car – described as a cross between a crossover and a sports car – will be as successful as the Qashqai was in its market.

Nissan makes a point of not selling ‘me too, copy-car’ cars in Europe, which is why it no longer has conventional EU market models competing against the Golf and Mondeo. (Interestingly, the Ford is healthily outsold by the Qashqai, which shifted 200,000 units in Europe last year).

I’m moderately surprised at their confidence. In the metal, the Juke is pretty unusual. Imagine a Nissan Murano scaled down to fit on the same platform as a Nissan Note. The car’s proportions are quite dramatic, particularly the boat-like front end. This styling theme was dreamt up by UK-based designers at Nissan Paddington design centre.

Nissan’s design chief, Shiro Nakamura, says there are elements of the Murano, Infiniti FX and even GT-R in the Juke. He admits that the Juke has been seen as a polarizing design in customer clinics, but thinks that there are plenty of buyers who will love it, especially if they don’t mind the tight rear cabin and smallish boot.

Prices are expected to kick off at between £13,000 and £14,000, but the real interest lies with the range-topping model, which combines a 188bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine and a four-wheel drive system with torque vectoring.

In steady conditions, the Juke runs as a front-driver, but when the car’s various sensors (including a yaw, steering and accelerator sensors) detect either sharp maneuvers or the onset of understeer, the drivetrain sends 50 per cent of the engine’s torque back to the rear wheels.

The rear differental can then split that torque between the rear wheels, helping the Juke steering aggressively, but steadily, into bends. The Juke has also been benched marked against cars including the Peugeot 207 and Mini and has been extensively tested on UK roads. European Jukes get their own, unique, chassis settings.

Sounds pretty handy, and an advance on what anybody else is doing in this sector. I just can’t help wondering if the Juke is really going to appeal to sportily inclined young male who will appreciate that kind of advanced drivetrain.

I suspect that it is young women who might fancy the SUV looks and car park-handy sizing.

But whoever buys it, the introduction of the Juke is great news for Nissan’s Sunderland plant.

Hmm exactly the same price as the new Audi A1.

Its almost as if manufacturers think of a price and then work forwards from there. Only in the case of Nissan they went forwards while looking backwards.

fredwest February 10, 2010 11:03 PM

'Are you a young, single, urban male, batting for the other side, blind and in urgent need of sectioning? Then the Nissan Juke is the car for you'

beachland2 February 10, 2010 11:11 PM

It's a womans car, it's even got breasts.

fhp11 February 10, 2010 11:43 PM

That thing is hideous! I think they forgot to mention that you need to be a young, male...... clown to be part of the potential customer base.

And please correct me if I'm wrong, but does this not have a slight hint of Pontiac Aztec? In that the Grille and the lights all seem to be in the wrong place?

Richard H February 11, 2010 6:16 AM

Young, single, urban male?

I would drive one of those if they paid me.

They did pay you, and look what happens.

That's more girly than a pink Micra

Richard H February 11, 2010 6:17 AM

I meant I WOULDN'T drive one of tjhose if they paid me, how embarassing.

Not as embarassing as driving a Nissan Juke

It's another stupid name for a car from Nissan

chandrew February 11, 2010 7:31 AM

You can understand car companies trying to position cars for the young, single, urban male as to some it is a glamourous proposition, but the truth is that everyone I know living in a city centre (and me included when I lived in Westminster) doesn't own a car, instead relying on a mixture of foot, two wheeled transport and a taxis to get around.

superstevie February 11, 2010 8:16 AM

I'm young (well 5 months from being 30) male, live in a city (edinburgh) but not single (civil partnership), but I love this car. I will be having a serious look at it when it comes out.

Chris576 February 11, 2010 8:16 AM

This is just another example of how car company marketing men have completely and utterly lost touch. Nissan now has nothing in its range that qualifies in any way as a buyable car.

It's not about whether they are superior or inferior to the competition - they've completely forgotten what a car is. But then so have a lot of car companies. There's a massive hole in the market for someone who can make a half decent car. And there's a very long list of car makers who really wouldn't be missed if they went out of business.

LP in Brighton February 11, 2010 8:58 AM

It's not for me, but it's really good to see a manufacturer being brave and doing something different.

It only needs to appeal to a few people who go out and buy it to become a success, and I hope it succeeds.

I think we can forget about the young, single, urban, male bit - that's all part of the image Nissan is trying to create. It will be interesting to see who the actual customers are...

noluddite February 11, 2010 8:58 AM

I think marketing this as a young mans car is rather clever. Girls are not put off by this, whereas the reverse would be true.  I can see this competing well with minis and ds3's.

MattDB February 11, 2010 9:02 AM

The market reasearch for this one must have been done in down town Tokyo.  This car will be the death of the Sunderland plant as I hear they have inflicted its production on our friends in the NE.

Fiat 500, Mini, Citroen DS3, Audi A1, Alfa Mito.  Nissan doesn't stand a chance against this lot!!

Guess you decided to ignore the bit about Qashqai now outselling Mondeo in Europe...

Chris576 February 11, 2010 10:56 AM

@nettingham

Don't get me started... Speaking as a buyer of second hand cars (my current transport, bought at three years/35,000 miles, cost a quarter of its new price), the behaviour of people who buy new cars mystifies me. They are prepared, for a start, to pay wildly over the odds. They think grey (which they call 'metallic silver' or some such) is incredibly cool. They think the primary function of a car is to impress the neighbours (who will be impressed, apparently, by the grey, because they had to pay extra for it. - the neighbours btw, don't care about other people's cars).

And perhaps most annoyingly they are terrified of practicality. They think the worthiness of an estate car is in inverse relation to the amount of usable space in it. They like pretend practicality, but run a mile from anything you can actually load up. They don't appear to have any friends, so they only really need the one seat anyway.

Qashqais sell because creaky old people can get into them. That's one thing Nissan has got right.

Meanwhile I've no idea what my next car is going to be. All I want is a half usable middle sized estate car - the car industry can't manage it.

What about the Golf? All the car you will ever need as many have said. Solid, good to drive, spacious, decent boot, not too badly priced. What's not "half decent" about it?

Oh yeah, ITS AS DULL AS DITCHWATER!

Lee23404 February 11, 2010 11:10 AM

Well I applaud nissan for being brave enough to come up with something different, it's just a shame it looks so awful.

I can't see many young (straight) men going for it either.

sewa February 11, 2010 11:27 AM

"I can't see many young (straight) men going for it either."

my thoughts exactly...

DKW February 11, 2010 11:29 AM

'I think marketing this as a young mans car is rather clever. Girls are not put off by this, whereas the reverse would be true.  I can see this competing well with minis and ds3's.'

I think you're right, Noluddite  , this is at best a 'metrosexual' car, maybe they don't really expect young males to go for it. Except possibly in San Francisco or Brighton ...

Perhaps it should read 'Are you a young, single, urban hairdresser?'

sportwagon February 11, 2010 11:41 AM

I am not gay and I am not a hairdresser, but I fell into either category I would be extremely offended that anyone would think that this pretentious gimmicky eyesore would appeal to me.

coolGav February 11, 2010 12:56 PM

"...thinks that there are plenty of buyers who will love it, especially if they don’t mind the tight rear cabin and smallish boot."

So this is pitched at young single urban males with no more than 1 friend to share the car with. Oh and ideally ones who like boats more than cars as it looks like one... If they could afford this brand new then they could afford a used sports car and insurance for it. Or is the trick to sign them up to some lease aggreement and lock them into Nissan's for life?

kraftwerk February 11, 2010 1:06 PM

Nissan Puke, more like.

Andrew Lee February 11, 2010 1:26 PM

As a gay single urban male (but not young)... I hate this! And the name makes me cringe, like using the word "cool". For what it's worth, I'd be embarrassed to be seen driving it. Aiming a car at a particular demographic is crass - it should appeal without being 'targeted'. This is 'focus group' design.

PS To fredwest: good to hear that charming euphemism "batting for the other side" again - so quaint.

kraftwerk February 11, 2010 2:50 PM

By the way, 'juke' is young persons' street parlance for 'stab'. Way to go, Nissan marketing.

Myk February 11, 2010 3:06 PM

As another gay, urban, young(ish) male I too think it's hideous.

Oddly enough not all gays cut hair for a living, and not all of us have dubious taste in personal transport.

I wish, for once, a manufacturer wouldn't equate "daring and bold" with "plug ugly".  Cars can be unusual and nice to look at at the same time.

superstevie February 11, 2010 3:31 PM

Myk says:

"Oddly enough not all gays cut hair for a living, and not all of us have dubious taste in personal transport."

Here here! I'm gay too, I don't cut hair, I do not mince about etc etc. I'm a service engineer and most of my gay friends have jobs that wouldn't be classed as "Gay" There is a hairdresser next to my work, and guess what? He's straight!

However, I do like the Juke as I said earlier, but that has nothing to do with my sexuality.

"...And one in five people aged between 16 and 24 is now looking for work, the highest on record, the data showed..."

beachland2 February 11, 2010 9:33 PM

Nissan need to sort out the stupid slanty high up lights.

catnip February 11, 2010 10:33 PM

I wonder who  Kia  were aiming for in their marketing of the Soul...most of them in my area seem to be driven by the more mature driver, who, as someone else mentioned, appreciate it being easy to get into.

evanstim February 12, 2010 9:26 AM

I thought Nissan already had a vehicle for the young, single, urban male.

Only it's called Navara, not Juke.

Mr_H February 15, 2010 12:14 AM

I'm a young(ish), single, urban (well sort of) male. I don't want this pretentious pile of inelegant junk.....I want a 1986 Citroen CX GTi Turbo!
