First hand impressions of the new Audi A8

Chas Hallett
So what does the new Audi A8 look like in the metal?

Well I heard several of the 750 hacks that crammed into the ‘Audi Pavillion’ on Miami Beach say that it just looks like a big A4. Yes, they have a point - but it’s far more impressive and imposing than that, and not just because it’s bigger.

New Audi A8 revealed

The new A8 has a far more pronounced shoulder line and looks a lot more graceful than the A4, and the car it replaces. It also looks more chiselled and swooping too - if not quite the four door coupe look that Audi design boss Stefan Sielaff is claiming for it.

Sielaff can take a lot of credit for the way it looks inside though. We’ve got used to great Audi interiors and Sielaff himself was in charge of the cabin of the last A8. But this one moves the game on even further. Yes all the functionality is there, including a really impressive touch screen operating system. But the real joy is the craftsmanship inside. Textures, tones and materials really are more becoming of a Bentley than a Teutonic saloon. The back is an especially good place to sit too - even more so if the reclining chairs are fitted.

But the Audi’s got a difficult job. Despite the obvious appeal of the last two generations it’s never quite matched up to either an S-class or a 7-series in the eyes of luxury car buyers. Add the impressive looking new Jaguar XJ into the mix and it looks especially tricky.

But the new car looks a classy enough act to cope.

"never quite matched up to either an S-class or a 7-series": you think an A4 that's been Xeroxed at 120% is going to prevent the car remaining comprehensively outsold? We also know nothing of how it actually rides, something that is crucial to luxury buyers and where Audi are usually third rate. Be a nice surprise if they weren't.

I still regard Audis as super-modified VW. Now they have developed an unique platform to pin models from A4 upwards but still they do not have RWD. Quattro is good but FWD has no place in the premium car segment. Wake up Audi offer it like you did in the 1930s.

Especially the picture above reminds me of the Volvo S80, the shoulder line and the c-pilars. This thing is just boring, maybe the new A6 will be better.

A bland disgrace.  Why does anyone buying an A8 want a car that looks at all like an A4?  Particular when the A4 itself is so outrageously boring to behold.  Jaguar has ruffled feathers, some good, some bad.  This thing will ruffle none.  Dealer demos only.

eseaton: nicely put.

Audi seem to have had something of a Phaeton moment. "make it look understated!" they cried at the design meeting, or whatever the German for that is, failing to see that most people slamming $100K on the counter for a luxury car aren't going to want a $25K face on it.

also, from a browse of the forum thread, has there ever been such an overwhelmingly negative reaction to a car? its reminiscent of BMW's E65 7-Series launch (though for very different reasons).

tell you something: Jaguar must be relieved.......

Another bland and boring Audi.  Why do they all have to look the same.  Merc produce a vast range of cars that all look like Mercs but also look different from one another.

Roll on your group test that includes the new XJ and A8, and then we see who has made real progress.

A big crease down the side and a semi 'bangle butt'. I guess BMW did know what they were on about after all- at least they experimented with the styling a bit aswell. Audis now look like boring 'same sausage, different lengths'. Maybe if they ask nicely Bangle will come and do a job for them.

After looking at it again, the CLS resemblance looks even more pronounced: 'coupe' roofline + smallish rear window + waistline crease (= BMW influence too?) Hint of Volvo in its profile perhaps. Throw in the A4 front + A5 rear and this looks like a 'design by Photoshop' exercise!

Hmmm, really? Are you sure?

Just like the D3 A8, it will make a great used buy in a few years' time, when the market has worked out its true value.... which will be similar to the old one, relative to its competitors......a bit of a non-event, I think.

Missed the boat here didn't they?, instead of trying to make a German Bentley/Rolls, why didn't they add hybrid technology? and be the first to market with an up market , dare i say it?, ok then , here goes,...LEXUS!, there said it.

the good thing abt A8s has always been that 3 years and 30k miles later they all are £11999. And at those prices you get a hell of a lot of (stiffly sprung and awfully riding) car.

On a serious note, I am currently in the market for a sub £20k classy (read no M5s RSs and AMGs) uber saloon and have been looking at various Phaetons, A8s etc, but cannot see why anyone would not go for an XJ/XJR instead.

morellomax December 3, 2009 1:37 AM

theop - try a post-2007 facelift A8 (look for rectangular foglights) on 17s or 18s: they're quieter, ride better and have a more direct rack and are all dripping with kit. Just about achievable on your £20k budget I should think, definitely so if you can wait for the used market to deflate a bit.

morellomax December 3, 2009 1:42 AM

Scratch that - I see from the Audi used car locator that 2nd hand prices have gone up even further since I sold my last one. No facelift cars under about £28k. Hmmmmm... those prices have to drop soon.

theop December 3, 2009 2:19 PM

hmmm lets see how they fare after the new one is out...

Currently one can buy quite a few 30k miler 2005 XJRs for 18-20k.

I think this is the most car for the money now. (and the Phaetons if you don't mind the badge)... V10 TDI anyone?

Uncle Mellow December 3, 2009 9:30 PM

Think it needs more space between the front wheel-arch and the door shut-line to get the proportions right.

disco.stu December 4, 2009 9:53 AM

Just like the new XJ, i think we will need to see this one in the metal to really appreciate it.  i think that once you see it on the road alongside traffic, or at least in photos alongside an S-class or a 7-series, you might find it more appealing.

Interior definitely looks superb, though.

I have always believed that AUDI is very very serious about safety, I used to own a AUDI A3 in the past and I can tell you that, this car makes you feel extremely safe when driving it !!

Now,I would love to drive the nice new Audi A8.

The Audi A8 is a four-door four/five-seat large luxury car built by the German automaker Audi, to replace the Audi V8 as its flagship model. A8 have featured Audi's 'trademark' quattro permanent four-wheel drive as standard. Two generations of the A8 have been produced, in both short and long wheelbase form, and are built on successions of the Volkswagen Group D platform series.
