Underwhelmed by the Mini Coupe concept

Mark Tisshaw
Hands up who else has been a bit underwhelmed by the new Mini Coupe Concept?

When I first saw BMW’s latest Mini incarnation, I didn’t really know what to make of it. It’s certainly striking, certainly bold, and certainly different. But is it something you would desire to own?

See the full Mini Coupe Concept picture gallery

I’ve been a big admirer of what BMW has done with the reinvention of the Mini brand. The ‘new’ Mini is still as striking now as it was when it first came out and few cars, Fiat 500 aside, look as modern or as chic.

But when a car has been inspired by a teenager’s baseball cap being worn backwards, you know it’s not going to be pretty. A pocket Porsche it certainly is not.

To Mini, it’s also a bit of unnecessary diversion away from the core Mini brand values. Minis are (were) all about a wheel in every corner design, a compact package and, above all, a fun motoring experience which doesn’t cost the earth.

If it’s being pitched as a rival to the Audi TT or Peugeot RC Z, this puts it well into the £20k and over category. Hardly what you would call affordable, but I can’t help but think the badge will ensure it’s a showroom success.

Maybe it will grow on me, but when a car underwhelms this much when you first catch eyes on it, it doesn’t bode well. One thing that is potentially more enticing is what it’s like to drive, and I hope with the Mini Coupe it’s a case of don’t judge a book by its cover.

The car doesn't look right to me. To only change the glasshouse and plonk it back down on the Mini body is half-hearted. Both the Pug and Audi look considerably more special, focused and less like the work of a talented amateur than the Mini

its a good concept, looks bad with colouring would be better in black or graphite.

but the goal is commendable not at all money grabbing, how can a coupe that is lighter and better performing be described and just another mini. its better than the others.

and i would have thought it will be better made and designed than the pug RCZ which at £25K wont be able to compete with a mini coupe at the same price. to see some in motorsport in some way will make it more attractive.

considering the JCW beat the RS focus in some tests as the overall best hot hatch, and even better version being the mini coupe (JCW) will be the new top of the pack in best cars available to buy.

but thankfully there is and will be a lot of competition for that title and this will make things better and better for all of us.

Has negative reaction from press and public alike ever stopped BMW / Mini producing a car?  Not that I can remember.

lrh August 26, 2009 5:36 PM

It's taken them 3 years after launch of the regular car to come up with this???

MoeK August 26, 2009 5:54 PM

I actually really dig it.

not! August 26, 2009 5:57 PM

Like every single model from BMW, 1-Series apart, people will buy and rave it. X6 is f-strange and f-useless, but people still buy it.

230SL August 26, 2009 6:54 PM

Looks like a Mini that has rolled.

The idea behind it is fine, but the execution is terrible. Looks like they gave a car to a body-kit company with a very loose brief. I'm surprised the designer has stuck his hand up and explained what he did....

theop August 26, 2009 9:24 PM

how many niches can these people come up with?

Most of their niche efforts are ugly anyway.... The mini also fels utterly useless.... Why would anyone buy one?

superstevie August 26, 2009 11:10 PM

I actually rather liked this, and I even liked the colour, though not the stripes

doubt it will be worth the extra over the standard hatch. I would happily buy a small coupe, if one came to market that was cheap enough. I think there is a gap in the for a small coupe again, with a price of about 12-15k with decent handng looks and performance

superstevie August 27, 2009 9:37 AM

i should also add, that the reference to the backward baseball cap was a little naff

Casanova August 27, 2009 10:08 AM

The idea is right, but the execution, with all that garish and fussy jewellery is terrible.  Coupés look best with simplicity of shape - this looks like they've covered it with glue and smashed through the aftermarket catalogue...

As long it is a small car, they can do what they want with it, small cars are much more fun than big ones. As long as they don´t come up with an idea like an R-Class and put a mini badge on it. But as long it stays small, why not put some fun in it.

It is odd how sometimes the old mind wanders off on strange subjects.   While in a traffic queue, I glanced to the right and spied a new Mini Countryman and it got me thinking:

Could there be a Mini Champ military vehicle

Or

A Mini moke, a civvy version of above

Or

A Mini bus, a LWB taller version of the Countryman that would carry adults

Or

A Mini Van based on the bus but no windows

Or

A Safari version of Mini bus with all wheel drive

Or

A Mini Hearse based on above bus

Or

A Mini forward control all terrain vehicle

Or

A raised ground clearance version of the 4WD for quad type activities

Or

There must be more!!!!

I am sure the Marketing Dept at Oxford will have some good ideas!

The Monte Mini concept of three years ago was a much more interesting effort than this warmed up burger of a coupe.  I would have been queueing for the former, this new one is a dud.

theop August 29, 2009 10:01 PM

random input: saw a red mini cabrio today with a gorgeous blond girl giving it some.... In fact I could not lose her and I was on my bike... Sexy as they come... Girls and good stylish cars...

Can you see the above cutting it in style? Or any of the beautiful sex worth her salt wanting one?

It will end up being 15yold essex wet dream...

Somebody mentioned its like a project given to a bodykit company let loose... I think I agree

Sacto8221 August 30, 2009 12:58 PM

What's the point of the MINI Coupe anyway? The current MINI hatchback is so small that sacrificing headroom in the back for the "fastback" look makes totally no sense.

superstevie August 30, 2009 11:12 PM

but it doesnt have back seats i dont think? its a 2 seater

CSwain September 1, 2009 8:11 PM

There is a big part of me that REALLY wants to like this...

but there is just one small thing that is bugging me. The roof.

Don't get me wrong, im loving the new Mini design and the way the roof sweeps back, but its where it goes from there. If you simply cut off the spoiler and then re-modeled it onto the top of the boot, i would be a bit more happy.

If you look at the link below, it is as though they have tried to get a "luxury yacht" feel to the back of the car, and if you hadnt guessed by now, i dont like it.

reviews.cnet.com/2300-10863_7-10001448-6.html

So my thoughts. Take the back of the roof/windows off and redesign so it doesn't stop short of the boot. Just so you wont have such a square lump on the back of the car.

parry September 3, 2009 9:15 AM

In my personal oppinion something is going very wrong in the mini design office. Im wondering if this is a continuation of bmw's new design errors in the ugly 5 series just released.

I like to bring up the saying, why fix something that isnt broken ? Isn't that what mini are attempting to do here. There is nothing wrong with there current models, and I believe that even through the econmic down turn, sales and interest for these models has remained high.

Nikonguy September 11, 2009 5:01 PM

It looks too unfinished.  The roof dosnt blend in with the body and NO rear seats? strewth, they'll be saying next that they;ve finally managed to put a proper boot in the rear instead of the 2nd glove box from previous models

inthebin September 18, 2009 5:59 AM

This does not make sense. What is wrong with having fun in the standard hatchback. This is pointless (for the buyers anyway).
