There's nothing to see here

Ollie Stallwood
There was a buzz of excitement in the office this morning building up to the new Bentley Arnage pics and details being released.

Bentley isn’t the kind of manufacturer that puts out nine press releases a day, keeping us up to date with every new windscreen wiper design, it is much too grown up for that and moments like these don’t happen very often.

So it was with tingling anticipation we refreshed our screens waiting for the press release on the replacement to a proper Bentley to drop. And then it did, and I nearly choked on my tea. It was so uninspiring.

New Bentley Arnage pics and video

That’s not to say the new Arnage won’t be something very special, but the black and white pic made me wonder whether this whole “teaser” thing is getting out of hand. As I stared at the screen trying to work out if there is anything that is worth reporting on you start to wonder why they bother, it practically tells us nothing.

Sure, the bonnet is clamshell and the design appears to keep true to the classic appeal of Arnages of yore, but that’s about it. The two lines of text to go with the release told us even less.

But as I sit here wondering what the point of this whole exercise is I realise that I’m still thinking about it. The picture and short video are now being seen across the world, people asking more questions about the car than they did yesterday. It’s frustrating but as car nuts we will hang on any detail we can get. It’s frustrating but it works.

there is a clay model which can now be seen at bentley by some people and it is a very nice looking thing. It's still a poper arnage (or whatever it will be called, currently just project kimberly if i remember rightly) will have proper engine and 'right'wheel drive along with a much better navigation system (next generation). Those who have seen it all agree that it is the real deal so no need to worry.

But I agree the teaser you've got is rubbish!

Since any Bentley is totally out of bounds for me on size , never mind the price , this is of purely acedemic interest. Nevertheless I still resent the dreadfull job BMW did on the front end of the RR , and I sincerely hope VW will be more sympathetic in their approach.

I agree on the Phantom front. The bentley WILL retain some old school class compred to the slightly nouveau Rolls.

Ollie, actually there is something to see here - the front wing. What exactly was the point of this article?

I'm with Ollie on this one- the point of this article is to question whether Bentley should lower itself to these pathetic teasers that are becoming so commonplace these days. It's bad enough that Jag does it every other day. So what if you can see a sliver of front wing? Are we all so desperate to see some Bentley porn that we're expected to salivate over this 'flash of the ankle' rubbish? Sorry mate, not me.

I really don't care at this stage what car it is - it's just a super bit of photography: great lighting and a nice composition. I'm sure the car will be superb and that I will really want one even though I'll never be able to afford it, but I'm happy to wait and don't need to see a "teaser" shot.

What is a teaser image?  It's nothing more than free advertising for Bentley, and in todays depressed car climate where negative stories rule, it is likely to stick out like a sore thumb!

And from everyones reaction, it has done it's job.  Ollie Stallwood has blogged about it and quite a few people have commented on it.  Job done.

If you don't like it or don't agree with it, don't comment.  This way Bentley won't get the publicity and advertising this picture set out to get.

Sorry Teg, but if an Autocar reporter writes a blog article discussing the merit (or lack of) of these so-called teaser shots, of which I have an opinion, then I understand that I have a right to comment. Isn't that the point of these articles? The article wasn't about how impressive the car looks and my response wasn't about the car. I certainly don't need to be told by other posters not to comment when my comment is in direct response to the fundamental premise of the article. Thanks all the same.
