Wowed by the Citroen DS concept

Chas Hallett
I came away from the Geneva motor show completely revved up about the Citroen DS concept. I like what Citroen is trying to do – making the brand more upmarket with a credible Mini rival – and I liked the concept itself; it’s fresh, funky and refreshingly free from any retro design cues.

But I came away from Paris yesterday even more impressed, after seeing the latest iteration of the concept. This time round we got to see the inside of the car and a cabin which, give or take a couple of items, will be what we get on the real thing when it goes on sale next March.

In short, it’s lovely. Probably even better, in fact, than the exterior styling. And if the quality and excitement of the whole thing do make it onto the production car as promised (and I’ve got no reason to doubt the Citroen big cheeses) then plenty of DS3s could easily be nestling next to Minis in the car park of a luxury apartment block near you.

I think it looks great, apart from that quasi-singleframe front-end treatment.

The next must have.  The automotive equivant to the iPhone.

I'm pleased to see this from Citroen, a welcome dose of sophistication after the sometimes too cute Mini and Fiat 500.

The automotive equivalent of bird flu. All smoke and no go.

I'm not too struck on the exterior of the DS3, especially the Suzuki SX4 exterior. The interior looks good though..wonder what the build quality will be like?

I meant to say Suzuki SX4 type rear......

Let me out myself as an out-and-out Citroen fan, first.

Having said that, I have reservations about the exterior design and the 'driver involvement'.

The former looks a bit fussy. I like the simple but surprisingly sophisticated lines of some slightly older Citroens but have noticed that what looks a bit off at first appears rather well proportioned when examined in the light. The Xantia may have been derided as boring, but look at the proportions, it's actually very well executed. We'll see when the DSs arrive in the flesh.

I sincerely hope that Citroen do something about the awful power steering of recent models. Yes, bigger Citroens have always felt a bit insulated, but there was always some kind of connection to the road, even if it wasn't like a Beemer. Recent models of all sizes with this electric assist doings seem to be a bit comfortably numb to me. They discourage 'pressing on', which despite everything, and the appearance of being an accident in progress, Citroens have always been surprisingly good at.

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of the most imaginative car company around. Could be great, could be humdrum. I hope it's good.

I too would like to see a return to the old school 'pressing on' abilities of cars like the CX, XM, Xantia and this new one's namesake DS. These models offered near total isolation from the road - something we need now far more than back then - but breakthrough ideas such as DIRAVI allowed you to feel connected to the whole process. There is nothing quite like hustling an old CX GTi along the honeycombed tarmac of a winding country lane, and it's a shame that Citroën's love for technology and development was put to pasture when those dullards at Peugeot got involved.

And what of Hydractive? Without the suspension you have to worry that it'll be just another hard riding, cutesy looking, vaguely Germanic car for Germanic car fashionistas who won't care about an oafish ride quality and lifeless steering.

As someone who will probably never buy german because of the price and image issues, I am really excited about the DS range.

I worship at the alter of left field automotive design so for me Citroens are cool and always have been, along with Alfas, Lotus, Honda, current Abarths etc

A modern take with interesting design (floating B-pilar? nice) is right up my street.  When Renault get along to releasing a Gordini spider (ditto Abarth) and Honda its new CRX, I shall not know what to do!!!!!
