Horbury returns to Volvo

Chas Hallett
There are going to be some pretty happy people at Volvo HQ tonight knowing that the former head of design Peter Horbury is coming back.

Plenty of high-ups at Volvo that I’ve been speaking to have privately sounded off about the company’s current direction. Their feeling is that the Swedes have now spent a decade chasing BMW and Mercedes and failed miserably. Witness the losses, falling sales and the fact that parent company Ford wants to sell them, probably to a Chinese car company.

The glory days, they reckon, were when Peter Horbury was radically changing the look and image of Volvos in the early 90s, giving them a unique character and they want it back. It looks like they’re going to get their wish.

Whether the undoubtedly talented and extremely personable Horbury can help change the company’s fortunes in this environment and under new management is another matter. But I, for one, am looking forward to finding out.

Good to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks Volvo is crazy to chase after BMW/Merc/Audi sales.

Excellent news!!  Back to the style and innovation that turned Volvo around!   I had an S60 for a few years and loved the design.  To me, this was the first of the "coupe-esque" saloons, ahead of the much larger CLS and the new Passat CC.

Good. Good bloke. Innate talent and not as prone as most to talking in idiotic and meaningless clichés. Look no further than the 480. Back end new, interesting, clean - that's Pete's. Front end bloated, strange and not matching - not his. His no nothing, talentless Dutch boss came up with that. Strangely enough he took "early retirement", very early. Volvo has a lot more chance with Pete than without him.

So where does this leave Steve Mattin?

I think he's a great designer, but I also think the current range has heaps of Volvo character and a real stamp of recognisable Volvo design cues externally and internally.  Current Volvo interiors are amongst the best in the business at any level, whilst the exterior designs of the C30, C70, V50, S60, V70, XC60 and XC90 are all clean, Volvo-ish, attractive designs.  The XC60 is one of the best looking Volvos ever, I think.  Only the S40 looks a bit of a dullard compared to the rest of the range.  I would LOVE to see Bertone put together a limited run of a Volvo coupe model, just like back in the day with the 262C and the almost entirely forgotten 780 coupe.  The S60 lends itself well to a bit of a chopped roof a-la-262C and would no doubt look a lot sleeker with a few design tweaks and 2 doors.
