New Z4: enticing or challenging?

Hilton Holloway

The BMW Z4 was not exactly a runaway success. Indeed, it was easily outsold by the Mercedes SLK throughout its lifetime.

34400bmw The uncompromising styling - perhaps the purest expression of Chris Bangle's theories about surfacing - made it a hard sell.

The Z4's looks were also said to have put off a great proportion of the female buyers who helped make the Z3 a success.

The Z4 was also noticeably more expensive than a Z3 and was never sold in a more affordable four-cylinder version.

So while the Z4 was clearly a far superior car to the Z3, and a better driver's car than the SLK, it seemed to fall between two stools.

It lacked the handiness, hard-top security and chic looks of the SLK, but it also never gained a reputation as a serious driver's roadster in the manner of the Porsche Boxster.

56639bmw- So when I saw the new Z4 in the metal for the first time, I was taken aback.

BMW had done little to change the recipe. It retained the extreme long-nose proportions of the old car and although the styling has been softened, it is still strikingly atonal, shot across with odd cutlines and ridged panels.

The hard top might offer the security many buyers want (and the it solves the problem of over-the-shoulder vision of the old cloth top) but my first impression is of another BMW roadster that is determined to challenge, rather than entice, buyers.

Bloody awful.

Wasn't the 2.0 version the more affordable 4 cylinder??

Challenging, definitely challenging.

Yes, Hilton, BMW did release a 4-cyl model of the Z4, and from reviews it was very, very good.

I like this new model - topdown. The roof is just too ugly.

I beg to differ. I think the new one looks quite different to the old Z4. And they both look very good, IMO. I thought the Z3 looked naff though.

Regardless, I can already picture the entirely predictable Autocar future test result of the new Z4 against its rivals: "Z4 drives better than the SLK and TT, but not the wonderful orgasmic Boxster, etc etc etc...".

I've driven a fair few cars, and the Z4 2.0 I recently tanned over the backroads of Andalucia was one of the best all-rounders.

I love the looks (largely because they're not as girly as the Z3 and still cut the mustard after 6 years) and they're cheap as chipolatas now! I'm tempted.

Quite right. I had forgotten about the late-model four-pot. It was brought in after sales tumbled badly in one 12 month period, unless I have got that wrong as well.

No doubt the Z4 was a very good motor, but why not build a classically attractive roadster, rather than bet the farm on another oddball? I have seen it in the metal and the long nose-stubby rear is even more pronounced in the new than it was in the out going car.

I was never a fan of the old Z4, but the new one IS different in every way. Some lines might remind us of the old, but the proportions have all shifted for the better. Compared to the Ferrari California, just look how eligant and streamlined the rear is. (What were they thinking those Ferrari designers?) That long eligant nose and aggresive headlights, the prominent kidney grill (unlike the new 7). To me, this is the most beautifull car from BMW in years!

Pitty Autocar can't recognise a new car when it sees it. I won't even bother with reading the road tests... that script has been written allready.

The Boxter remains the benchmark of these cars, NONE however provide enough leg or headroom for a 6'5 person like myself.

Why can they not make an SL sized interior with a Z4/Boxter sized exterior?
