On the automotive ugly duckling

Chris Harris

Given that this section encourages me to break one of my few self-imposed editorial rules – don’t pass comment on styling because it’s too subjective - I shall gladly make an exception. So, here's a list of cars that, to me, looked ropey at first, but now, for some weird reason, look rather appealing.

1) BMW 5-series. I know this has been written about a thousand times or more since the current Five was launched, but I still find it fascinating. In Sport trim, I think this car looks absolutely superb now, and yet I hated more than I could communicate back in 2003.

2) Seat Leon. I thought Steve Lewis and Seat's other design boys had been at the Rioja (and an unusually potent vintage) when I first clapped eyes on this intriguing-looking little hatchback. Now it makes all its rivals look tired and derivative by comparison. Go figure.

3) Porsche's Cayman. Dumpy thing in 2005; now I’m a fan. Perhaps I've unconsciously put a positive spin on the way it looks just because it’s so damned good to drive; whatever the reason, I'm convinced that this is a fine-looking sports car.

And then there's the cars that sit at other end of the automotive spectrum; the ones you like at first, only to go off 'em. In here I'd put the Audi R8, which I like less and less as the days pass, and the Lotus 2-Eleven, which now makes my guts roll.

Feel free to add and annotate this list accordingly; be interesting to see how the recurrent compliments and condemnations stack up.

About Chris Harris

The world needs no keener autophile than Chris. When not worrying about his carbon footprint, he races Porsches, which clears his mind. His collection of cars is too long to list.

For me it was the Discovery that I didn't like at first, that weird headlight design, the strange way that the styling line stopped part way along the doors then reappeared again, the size of the thing.

Now I think it is a clean and simple design.  My epiphany happened when I saw a dark red one rather than the normal silver paintjob.

The New, new MINI on the other hand is the other way round. The old new MINI is sculpted, the new one is too boxy with all the interesting curves gone.

There are still ugly motors such as the Cayenne or the bilious Rodius which will never morph into swans.

Chris, I think I can agree with you on the 5-series only in Sports trim and in medium to dark colors.  This design is very color sensitive, much more so than say the current Audi A6, which looks good in any color I've seen it in.

I thought the new Mondeo looked great when I first saw it on the James Bond flick, but since then my enthusiasm has waned considerably.  The previous Mondeo's design had much more lasting power in my book.

I still find the Cayman rather strange looking whereas I find the 911 to possess a minimalistic beauty and form, still pure despite the myriad updates it has been subjected to.

Agree with Major Tom on the Cayenne, and I think the X6 is the ugliest car to ever wear the propellor badge!

I love the smooth rounded lines of the Citroen C6 and believe that is a design that will look great 2 decades from now just as an early '70's Citroen DS 23 still looks beautiful and special almost 4 decades on.

I cannot get used to the new AMG treatments for the C-Class, E-Class, CL and S-Class.  They have beat reasonably decent looking cars with the ugly stick.

I agree with Chris that the Leon looks great from any angle, but I actually liked it the moment I saw it.

Peugeot is another designer that has been going crazy with the ugly stick!  The 607 and 406 Coupe were the last Pugs that possessed any quiet elegance.  The new design language is loud and almost vulgar.  Most unbecoming for what was the car maker for the French "bourgeoise" (spelling??) I think!
