F1 is dead - we should just go racing ourselves

James Ruppert
What vehicle you would go out and buy to use on a race track that was cheap and cheerful? Because of course racing cars is only ever interesting if you are actually doing the racing.

I say this because whatever residual interest any normal well adjusted person has for Formula 1 must have evaporated by now.

F1, which I must point is not a sport, is only watched by geeks who love the tech, anoraks that study rulebooks and supporters of sundry global corporate brands. Let’s all cheer for Vodasantanbull!

As it is not a sport, ideally F1 should be regarded high technology warfare with no rules whatsoever. Then I might be interested. I was certainly interested when men were Moss, blokes were Hunt, and drivers were Senna, but not anymore.

So, as we can safely ignore the stupid goings on in F1 it is down to us to buy cars and go proper racing. Grasstrack racing is a wonderfully exciting event and has lots of mud. Mud would certainly liven up F1 and reminds me of the brilliant Rallycross events you could watch on ITV’s World of Sport when they murdered retired rally cars.

Autotesting is interesting and at least you can see the whole event in one car park. Drag Racing is quick and settles the argument as to who is fastest in seconds. Drifting certainly seems fun for participants and spectators alike. Banger racing is just silly although it would be perfect to rid the world of the BMW X6.

So what should we buy? A kit car Caterham-alike for Autotesting and track days? Minis aren’t cheap anymore and I understand from grasstrackers that Micra 1.0 engines are all the rage, so why not one of those for £500 and get on the grass?

Indeed a 200SX for the drifting, or an early E number BMW in all its obvious glory?

With the failure of F1 we have to make our own entertainment these days, but which banger would you buy purely for competitive fun?

Not sure what planet you live on, Jimmy, but it's certainly not planet Earth. This season has been one of the most gripping in living memory. As for your "when men were Moss" comment, well, not all of us aspire to be the King Loser.

Pistachio July 30, 2010 5:14 PM

One slight problem

A TV costs a few quid and a freeview box a few more, but going racing yourself costs quite a bit more, a hell of a lot more in fact.

Freelance journo July 30, 2010 5:58 PM

A agree with 'Straight Eight' above about Moss. He was NEVER a champion!

As for racing, well there's two ways we could go.  Either have no rules at all, or start a new Formula where cars must travel by road to the circuits - proving that they are street legal.  That way we would see actual street cars racing. No, not Le Mans-type stuff, because they're not street legal. I would love to see real cars like Volvo C70s racing Mondeos, racing BMW M3s. And no I don't mean BTCC because they're not street legal either.

shortbread July 30, 2010 5:59 PM

Albeit that F1 is quite boring (especially after watching Senna's trbute video on TG), this season has been really tight. Even more exciting is that even the team mates are fighting each other, well not Ferrari but the rest.

There must be some kind of racing series where one can just walk up on the race day and just pay for a seat. Something like Hispania, Torro Rosso and Virgin.

"A agree with 'Straight Eight' above about Moss. He was NEVER a champion!"

You obviously haven't been paying attention. Championships can be won by other drivers moving over for you to pass. Moss won races by being the best.

kdwilcox July 30, 2010 7:32 PM

Please Straight Eight Pool Shark check your FACTS before you say such rubbish,Freelance Journo as for 'he was never a champion' read what Uncle Mellow wrote, you may just

learn some thing if you do.

Latebreaker July 30, 2010 8:18 PM

Tricky one this, I think we have one of the best group of drivers for a long time, however technology, rules, race format does make nearly all dry races boring. The face that more than one team can win races is a big plus for F1 this season, which should lead us to an exciting finish for the last race.

To say "F1, which I must point is not a sport" James is quite silly.

Curmudgeon July 30, 2010 10:15 PM

I only ever went to see motor racing once - Brands Hatch (well, I think it was) and Hunt won.  Looking round the pits etc. was fun but I thought the F1 race itself was already pretty dull - just saw these things flashing past (who was that?  I don't know, think it was Hunt etc.).

The saloon car racing was great fun, though.  It was mostly the Toyota Celicas and Hillman Avengers I remember - the Avengers won.  So perhaps an old Hillman Avenger if there any left?

Nowadays I keep tabs on who wins F1 never bother to watch.  Sad.

Neyomo July 30, 2010 11:02 PM

Never mind F1, everyone should be watching GT1! The new format this year has allowed me to get into it properly from the start and the fact you can watch all the races on GT1world.com sells it for me - And its Spa this weekend... :-)

sportwagon July 30, 2010 11:16 PM

Vintage car racing is the only motor sport worth watching. Nothing can beat watching pre-war Bentleys, Bugattis and ERAs being driven in anger, often more rapidly than when they were new. You can even see the drivers working away, rather than just the top of their helmets. Add the sounds and the smell of Castrol R; you just can't beat it.

James Ruppert July 30, 2010 11:30 PM

Glad that we are finally getting into the spirit of the Blog, I've poked you with anti F1 sticks but really I want to know what you want to go and watch and also go out and buy for  a track day or some proper full on entertainment...

James Ruppert July 30, 2010 11:31 PM

Oh yes and the anti Moss comments are really utterly unforgiveable.

I would love to see real cars like Volvo C70s racing Mondeos, racing BMW M3s. And no I don't mean BTCC because they're not street legal either.

It exists in many club racing forms. Oh and in general as someone who has stod and watched at Brands and Silverston etc to view its boring as hell.

I would say that for circuit racing the £to entertainment equation has to go to the caterham type racers

SimonBenson July 31, 2010 8:54 AM

Grasstrack or short oval racing can be really good fun - and cheap to take part in... The comment about 1 litre Micra's is totally correct!  I know people who but an MOT failure Peugeot 205/Citroen AX or Micra and do a whole season on the knackered old thing - costs are their preparations (strictly limited and mainly safety related), entry fees, fuel (race car and tow car) and some fairly dodgy burgers.  'New' tyre(s) occasionally but only from a scrappy because one of the old ones has failed.

DSP123 July 31, 2010 9:05 AM

Nice hand grenade there Jim!

Used to watch Formula 1 back in the '70s/'80s. Finished when Our Nige was lost to the ovals. Since then I can't be bothered to follow the 'Red Button' as anything that happens on the run into the 'race' is usually nothing to do with the 'race' itself.

Jaundiced? Only by having been spoilt for years by edge-of-the-seat racing.

I'm not totally convinced of the sainthood of 'The Greatest Driver Never To Have Won The World Championship', having waited for 20 minutes at the Goodwood FOS #4. He was chatting with Frank Gardner (a really nice bloke) and after being asked politely for a photograph, he grudgingly obliged after being chided by Frank to do so .....

'Jenks', his old MM mukka, ostensibly a curmudgeonly old stick, was more than happy to pose for a shot.

It's often said about Moss that his smile never appears outside a flash bulb or interview. A view I endorse, unforgiveable or not.

Other 'heroes that wouldn't get my vote?

Ron 'I never smile' Dennis & Tif 'don't talk to me I'm busy' Needel.

And, finally, my hero? Derek Bell. By far the most friendly, chatty and obliging bloke you could meet. Remembers you and says 'Hi!' each meeting.

ps. met Moss' sister Pat when she was running a works Alpine on the TT - great lady ....

Freelance journo July 31, 2010 9:09 AM

James, KDWilcox, and Uncle Mellow. Not "anti Moss" at all! Just stating a matter of FACT. Stirling Moss NEVER won a championship! Moss WASN'T the best, Uncle Mellow.

I do smile at some comments where people get all misty-eyed (which totally affects their objectivity) over some or other racing driver. But facts are facts. Moss was instrumental in getting beaten by Hawthorn due to his sportsmanship. However, Moss was correct, and Hawthorn never should have been penalised because he hadn't actually broken a rule (he was off-track) - so Hawthorn won fair and square, and so HE was the best, not Moss, Uncle Mellow. You may not like it, but there it is all the same.

So you see, kdwilcox, you might learn something if you read up rather than just cheerleading someone else's ignorant comment. My comment wasn't "rubbish" and that says more about you than I could. It's my opinion based on facts. You may disagree with my opinion, but to call it rubbish when you clearly don't know anything about the issue you attack me on is pathetic to say the least!

Why do I bother? People just want to believe what they want to believe, rather than facts. It's like being at a Christian seminar.

jch July 31, 2010 9:18 AM

On a purely practical point, if there was a significant increase (say 25%) in entrants in motor sport could the current circuits cope?  A lot have planning restrictions on the number of meetings or curfews on when the racing must stop.

Slightly more worrying would be the number of numpties thinking they were the next Button, Hamiltion or indeed Stirling Moss!

Lanciaman July 31, 2010 9:40 AM

DSP123`s comments are quite interesting. Your experience of Tiff Needell is exactly the same as mine, so presumably he is usually like that. As to Moss, I have always revered him, but as I have never met him, I am revering the persona he wants the media to portray, not the man himself. The observations of someone who has actually met him are quite revealing.

Why people watch F1 baffles me; however much money and technology there is, there is hardly any actual RACING, which is what it`s supposed to be about, isn`t it? Touring Cars is slightly better, but is really just glorified Dodgem cars. Watch the motorcycle racing; you`ll see more overtaking in one lap than in a whole Grand Prix.

Track days? Pointless. If you want to race, do it properly.

Grasstracking is really cheap, good fun and you can stay in the lower classes or progress to faster ones, whichever you want.

Lanciaman July 31, 2010 9:49 AM

P.S.

I forgot about the VSCC. Go to one of their race meetings, they`re brilliant. Everybody talks to you, whoever they are, and walking round the Paddock is as interesting as the racing, if not more so. I remember at one meeting a guy turned up in a car with a massive V-twin engine, with two aero engine cylinders on a crankcase he had built himself. He raced it and then drove home in it! How good is that!

kdwilcox July 31, 2010 11:14 AM

Freelance Journo,i did not say  your comment was

rubbish,please read my post.

I said what Straight Eight Pool Shark said was rubbish,

Moss was a King Loser.

As for saying my post says more about me than what

you could say, well, perhaps a visit to Spec Savers may

be of help.

At the end of the day this is all about opinion,i can quote who won what, when they won how they won and so on but at the end of the day that means nothing,

in my eyes Moss was the best, end of story, there is more to motor sport than F1.

Number 2,Jimmy,these two were so good the likes of Schumacher were not on the same street!.

AndyRAC July 31, 2010 1:26 PM

Yes there is other racing series out there!

This weekend sees GT1 World Championship & Spa 24 hours at Spa, also Rally Finland, BTCC.

F1 is far too overhyped for very little action.

PhilM4000 July 31, 2010 3:01 PM

I love watching Moto GP, and the riders are real heroes of racing.  I can't bring myself to watch TT racing as when people die it is never fun, but Moto GP seems to have the right amount of risk to make it exciting.

As for cars, watching the classic racing series where the cars are all drifting all over the place is great as a spectator.

The best entry level motorsport is Karting but it can get very very expensive.  I used to go Club 100 racing which meant you all had the same hardware and that levelled the field.  Well worth a go it you fancy trying proper Karting.

24JTD July 31, 2010 4:49 PM

Speedway.  Try it, as a live spectator sport it's excellent, on the TV it looks very dull.  'Proper' racing.

waylandsmithy August 1, 2010 12:34 PM

In line with your advice, I'm going to stop reading articles about cars and drive them instead.

Peter Cavellini August 1, 2010 3:58 PM

Take your pick!?,every racing series below is infinitely more interesting and honest, where everyone can relate to the cars particularily tin-top racing because their based on road cars,F1 just now is like a fashion show, weird and wonderful designs with the "beautiful people" who can afford to go to F1 races!, any form of tin-top racing is better, no question.

Peter Cavellini August 1, 2010 8:17 PM

JIMMY?,you mean see you Jimmy!, are you Russ Abbott, the COMEDIAN, POOL SHARK!

James Ruppert August 2, 2010 8:21 AM

Just caught up with goings on at the GP yesterday and understand that the safety car effectively decided the result of the race, so I rest my case. Plus His Schuness playing bumper cars.

kcrally August 2, 2010 8:03 PM

f1 was just as boring, when senna was racing. if schumacher was brazillian you would probably love him as well. how's your old fart of a mini. if your going to go racing, race something with injection, or you'll be playing with carburettors for the rest of the season.

vpande August 3, 2010 3:37 AM

My god. Typical nonsense from a hack living in the past. Interest in F1 dead? I guess that's why the combined viewing figures over 2008 and 2009 were over a billion and with 2010 title race prompting a further spike.

F1 had its processional races and idiotic controversies back in the day that you thought it was worth watching. The FISA-FOCA fiasco, Senna, Prost and Mansell winning by miles at their respective peaks, watching six turbo engined cars flatten the rest of the normally aspirated field.

I could go on and even tell you that in my experience F1 is watched by people who have no interest in its long term history or technology and who do regard it as sport.

And don't get me started on Stirling Moss. The macho twit who believes Jackie Stewart's efforts to make F1 safe ruined the sport.

Straight Six Man August 6, 2010 3:25 PM

I cannot believe all the hate here for Stirling Moss. The man is a true great - the only reason he never won a championship is called Juan Manuel Fangio. Moss is ten times the driver any of today's pampered prima donnas are... I'd like to see any of the Moss-haters drive a murderous Merc over 1000 miles of challenging roads AVERAGING 100mph in the 1955 Mille Miglia... that has to go down as one of the all-time great drives.

Oh, and there was one British Grand Prix at Aintree where, late on, Fangio was overtaken by Moss. Moss asked him repeatedly "did you let me pass deliberately?" and Fangio's response was simply "No, you were just better than me". Compliments don't get any higher than that.

Straight Six Man August 6, 2010 3:27 PM

If you want a practical, cheap, fun track day car, I can but recommend an E30 BMW 325i Touring. Lovely car. Get it in dark blue or dark green with the "lattice" alloy wheels.

feckin maso August 10, 2010 4:21 PM

there is some fantastic racing out there, stock cars provide probably the best racing with the juniors making an affordable entry route into the sport.

And could we have the world of sport racing back on please just after the f1 to wake us up

ascolti April 5, 2011 2:15 PM

F1's been dead for years. Unless something breaks, it's just an endless precession.

I always preferred BTCC, more action. Then that died... or at least it hardly appears on TV anymore... not very well promoted.

*sigh*
