A Sterling effort from my trusty banger

James Ruppert
I’ve been to John ‘O’ Groats and back this week. A pointless journey in an apparently marginal car in a stupidly short time frame.

As it was for charity no one actually questions your sanity, but they an question your mode of transport.

As this was an exclusively motor trade event it was packed with vehicle technicians who spend their entire lives shaking their heads, drawing breath, skinning knuckles and muttering accusingly: “Who replaced these suspension arms then chief?”

Obviously they criticised my blameless Rover Sterling reckoning that it would expire within yards in a haze of blue smoke, boiling coolant and chunks of sauteed motoring hack. How they laughed.

Well at least a Sterling is a comfortable place to be with deep leather seats, a lazy V6, CD, working air con and pretty much electric everything. It proved to be utterly magnificent, whether it was munching up the motorway miles, or negotiating the tricky Highland hairpins.

It was certainly the longest, most powerful and when new, the most expensive car on the rally. It was also one of the most reliable, as an old Land Rover expired and other cars had coolant, brake and warning light dramas.

How I laughed at the professional car fettler’s uniformly poor selections. Countless Civics, a cabal of Carinas, the inevitable Mark 1 Mondeo and an early ‘90s Astra. Plus there were several competitors, a 2001 Renault Scenic and Suzuki Vitara which can’t seriously be worth less than a grand, like they were supposed to be.

But hey, everything is being auctioned for charity and that means much more money is going to be raised. For logistical and organisational reasons the Rover won’t make the auction so if you would like to buy my Rover for rather more than £250, with tax and test to February, contact me and I will tell you what issues the old girl has.

All money goes to BEN, which offers care and support to employees of the automotive industry and their dependants in times of need. So I just wondered if you had been on a Banger rally and what you drove. If you haven’t what cheapo set of wheels would you choose?

I thought Autocar online content was being checked before being uploaded these days?

LP in Brighton November 13, 2009 6:32 PM

I'd choose a 1999 Nissan Primera, if only becaues I bought one blind off Ebay (for £450) about 6 months ago, and it's been near faultless ever since.

But a long drive to John O' groats with a mechanicaly sympathetic driver isn't a severe test, and i think  you're more likely to get problems after a couple of weeek's local running with granny at the wheel. I suspect that even my trusty Nissan might just fail this test!

Lanciaman November 13, 2009 6:46 PM

You nearly ruined my week James! I logged on at 16.50 - no James Ruppert column! However, better late than never. Congratulations on your car surviving the trip.

theonlydt November 13, 2009 8:19 PM

James - ignore the first poster (and some of the crap that's been aimed at your blog occasionally) - your blog is the highlight of my autocar week.

I'm a boring person and I'd usually go "Honda" as my default answer, though the Civics are overpriced - an Accord or Legend for under £1k would have been my default answer.

However, I saw something on autotrader today that would be too good to miss. Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1998 R, 100k, 4.0v6. Driving the thing that distance would bankrupt me, but can you imagine anything bigger, more comfortable and more likely to get you to your destination whatever the weather? Certaintly not a sub £1k Landrover, which is going to be in terrible shape.

James Ruppert November 13, 2009 11:02 PM

I've been edited to sound as though I hate Civics and actually I don't, because that is the best budget option. I was surprised that there was not an old Cherokee. I did use the Sterling on loads of long journeys for a few months before the proper run so that probably helped. Also I have a magnificent replacement lined up that I hope I can tell you about in the coming weeks.

Mondeo Owner November 13, 2009 11:15 PM

A few months ago it looked like my Dad would have a period between the sale of his X5 and the arrival of a replacement, so I suggested he looked at a £500-£1K banger to tide him over.

He was astonished at how much car you can get for that money, although he did then go out and buy a 2yr old Legacy the following week, but only after viewing 5 or 6 interesting cars.

So what would I choose - Honda Prelude probably or a nice older BMW (perhaps my own as it's only likely to be worth £1K with it's mileage nowadays).

beachland2 November 14, 2009 12:03 AM

The text has mistakes and the editor said he would be putting extra effort in, but maybe it doesn't apply to blogs?

James don't ignore my first post, it's important for Autocar as a whole.

beachland2 November 14, 2009 12:05 AM

"As it was for charity no one actually questions your sanity, but they [an] question your mode of transport."

James Ruppert November 14, 2009 12:08 AM

There are letters and words missing from my original blog, but hey ho....

theonlydt November 14, 2009 1:14 AM

"I've been edited to sound as though I hate Civics and actually I don't, because that is the best budget option" - I never thought you did, though used Civics have slightly artificially high prices at the bottom end compared to the actual reliability (there are some really rough, badly teated ones out there). Surely the rule has to be that the bigger you go, the better the deal? Most people won't pay for anything over a Mondeo size normally, especially not with a big petrol - so you can get something in good nick that's comfy for an absolute steal.

James - I'm dying to know what your new replacement is. The Rover was pretty "left of field" and I'm wondering if you've continued being different, or have conformed and gone for something like an Audi 80/A6, BMW 5 (E39 right? Never been good on bmw numbers...). An alfa 166 would earn you undying respect, but you probably need to be able to get to work in the morning... Honda legend is basically your 800 again, so that must be a no. Ah - the suspense!

Submariner Redux November 14, 2009 7:14 AM

James

thanks for bringing back some happy memories. For a period in the early 90s I regularly borrowed one of two Rover 800s, both fitted with the excellent 2.7 Honda V6, rather than the anemic 2.5 KV6. One was one manual, one auto, and I always found them enjoyable things to punt around, and an enjoyable contrast to my MArk 2 RS2000 and 2.4 Manta.

The manual was exceedingly rapid, if a bit torque-steery, and the auto, which had a decent hide interior, was a comforting and relaxing device.

These days, my 'banger for a grand' choice for long distance workwould either be a Vauxhall Omega or a Honda Accord , the one that looked rather like a slightly shrunken Omega. Pick a good one of either and you can have a surprisingly good time.

sorrel November 14, 2009 9:55 AM

James,

I think my choice would be a Merc 190. Having ridden in loads of 190 taxis in Lisbon and seen how hard they're pushed, this has got to be the trusty banger for me!  Real Merc quality in a little, cheap package!  :)

By the way, like others here, I look forward to your blog - the most relevent and interesting on the site!

Jaydub November 14, 2009 10:12 AM

You are a true weekly ray of light James keep up the friday blogs!

Rover 75 would be a cracking move from the 800, go for an Auto 2.0 V6 as that engine is relatively pain free in comparison to the 2.5 or 1.8, or grab a CDT if you can find one, such a smooth relexing car, you will lose space but gain serenity...

OR how about a 9-5/9000 they go on forever.

jammy_rex November 14, 2009 10:51 AM

Another enjoyable read!

If you'd have been driving a Honda engined (2.7) V6 800 then nobody would have expected you to fail, but with the good old British engineered (on a relative shoestring) K series there is always that element of doubt... but hey, the trusty old workhorse made it so happy days!

I await with interest your next banger purchase...

kurtverbose November 14, 2009 11:11 AM

Really surprised that Sterling's still going. Mine didn't have a hard life or a high mileage but died an early death.

And yes, it was the 2.7.

Not a bad car though. Fortunately I didn't pay much for it.

James Ruppert November 14, 2009 5:53 PM

Hello chaps, glad you enjoy our Friday get together...I must emphasise that the Honda V6 is very strong, though there is some tappetiness at around 30mph under load, but have been told that it is normal. I did look for a 190 but could not find one below £250. Otherwise a Mazda 626, Primera or Civic would have been acceptable, but I did want to travel in some style and comfort. Next Banger is lined up and will be put on a ramp this week to see if it is all sound. Then I will organise the usual competition with a prize at end. No clues at the moment though...

DavidMR November 14, 2009 7:45 PM

evening james.  you just beat to to it...i was going to ask whether this was the honda v6 or the later rover kv6.     not been here long, but really enjoy your blogs.   much prefer second-hand and classic stuff, to be honest, so, like others, i think fridays will be my point of reference here at autocar.   all the best!

Evo_ermine November 14, 2009 8:01 PM

Reminds me of Alan Partridge and the episode where someone painted graffiti on his Rover...

DavidMR November 14, 2009 8:08 PM

"Reminds me of Alan Partridge and the episode where someone painted graffiti on his Rover..."

lol.   i think mike(?) the geordie waiter turned "***" into "cook" to try and minimise alan's embarrassment (that was the episode he was supposed to have sue cook at the travel tavern).   now i'm going to have to dig out the partridge dvd.  wonder if james wore driving gloves on his scottish trip...

Evo_ermine November 14, 2009 8:39 PM

Yep DavidMR, that's the one! Think he was called Mike yeah, or Michael. That guy was hilarious. Remember the story he was telling about throwing a macaque monkey into the sea...lol.

Love a bit of Alan. The 2nd series he ditched the Rover for a Lexus IS200 i seem to remember.

DavidMR November 14, 2009 8:49 PM

yep, remember the macaque monkey thing. and your right, i think it was michael, not mike.    soon after they first met, michael was saying something in geordie and alan says something like:  "yeah, yeah, got the first bit, when der booort comes in, but the rest was just noise"

in the sue cook episode, they were talking about loading and firing guns and mike (ex-soldier) alarmed alan by saying he was going to "take oooot sue cuk".  think that was the one where alan got trapped in the house of jed, his favourite fan.

classic;) lol

Evo_ermine November 14, 2009 9:06 PM

That just made me chuckle remembering the 'that was just noise' bit. It's actually hard to pick a favourite episode, although the bit where he's drinking with those guys filming the waterboat holidays thing was great...the guy with the voicebox totally freaked him out lol.

Steve Coogan often mentions cars in his comedy as he's a car buff apparently, and i remember reading that he specifically requested they used an 800 as he thought Alan would be the type of guy who drove one  I wonder if James has a PA called Lynne too?!

DavidMR November 14, 2009 9:42 PM

james having a pa called lynne would be one thing, but i'd be really worried if his favourite tipple was a ladyboy...

Evo_ermine November 14, 2009 10:13 PM

Haha good one :)

Samiur Rahman SHAH November 14, 2009 10:41 PM

James

Good to hear about your Rover surviving the trip. I'm with LP on the reliability front though, who knows how much can these old cars take before they pop a head gasket or worse, after all, they're called bangers for a reason...

As for the next car choice, I'll say probably an old Volvo, a 960 maybe? An 850 might be too new yet.

Cheers!

Sami

I'd find a Senator 24v.

And I third it. His comments would be less risible if they weren't peppered with far more of the mistakes he whinges about in other posts. But he doesn't see those.

sorrel November 16, 2009 11:55 AM

Um.... methinks "beachland2" might be the main culprit here if anyone's a fool....  :)

Good point tonym911!   But why would we expect him to see his own errors?  Fools never do, sadly...

julianphillips November 16, 2009 12:29 PM

I would've used a Fiat Coupe or an Alfa GTV.  Or a Cosworth engined Scorpio.

beachland2 - If you really wanted to improve Autocar you would STOP posting.

Why don't you persue your other hobbies, like rearanging the pens in your top pocket, or perfecting your comb-over.

You really are the boy in school who tried o hard to be the teachers pet but even the teacher hated you.
