The £5k coupe Friday challenge

James Ruppert
I have to admit that this week I have mostly been looking at the BMW 6-series. Not the fright mask-wearing, bloated one you can find in the showrooms for around £15k, but the old-school shark-nosed ones. You can get them for £2995 (albeit with not much of a service history).

Anyway, that got me thinking: why would you pay £15k for a coupe when you can get something far prettier for just £5k?

A white Honda Integra Type R for £5k would be nice and I’ve seen a few of those in the classifieds recently in all their milk float colour scheme glory. I also have an immense amount of time for the long-lost Toyota Celica, and you should get a 2002 one for that. You can get miley Mercedes CLKs and Sport Coupes for that sort of cash, too. But are they proper Mercs? Course not; you want an E320 coupe in Sportline spec (the good-old early 1990s W124 model) for that. Better still, the values of these particular models have actually been on the rise in recent months.

Oddly, the quirky Citroen C4 VTR coupe is pretty much within budget – £5k can buy you a 2006 example. I rather like Citroens these days and at least it looks different, is practical and seems a better buy than a 2004 Hyundai Coupe at the same money.

Or how about something really interesting, like an old Mazda RX-7? I doubt there’s a prettier coupe out there, and you can talk rotor tips all day long with likeminded Rotarians.

Apparently Smarts count as coupes, too, but not as far as I’m concerned. And one more thing - I got all the way to the end of this without mentioning the now very affordable E46 6-cylinder BMW 3-series coupes…

So what sort of £5k coupe turns you on?

I've always had a bit of a penchant for the Toyota Sera... although for some reason am mildly embarrassed to admit it.

TegTypeR April 3, 2009 4:11 PM

Always one for the odd balls.....

Honda Accord Coupe.  £5k will get you one of the best left.  Hardly the most inspiring car in the world but its not bad looking and it'll go on forever.

Ford Puma.  £5k will get a 2002 1.7.  Sweet little coupe and great fun.  Personally would rather have the "Racing" model, but they're a little more.

Alfa GTV.  I've had a real hankering for one of these recently.  They seem to be getting better looking the older they get... like a good woman.  Mind you probably as reliable....

TegTypeR April 3, 2009 4:15 PM

..... and of course!

Vauxhall Astra Coupe.  Can get a reasonably quick one for £5k, although their not the sharpest of drives.

Volvo C70.  Probably the best looking Volvo before the C30.

tony2x April 3, 2009 4:33 PM

Saab 900 Turbo 16S

BMW 840Ci

Peugeot 406 coupe 3.0 V6

In that order.  Ok so the 900 is strictly speaking a hatchback but any excuse to get into an old skool 900 works for me!  For 5k you can get the sweetest late model Turbos.

billybobthethird April 3, 2009 4:43 PM

My money would be on a Corrado VR6.

Handsome, well built, easy to work on, relaible, no major problems, practical (more than you would think!) and they handle wonderfully.  Add the sound of the sweet 2.9 V6 motor...perfect

You will be able to pick up a very good one for 3.5 - 4k

too.

Or failing that - an E36 M3?

Paul123 April 3, 2009 4:46 PM

Some suggestions for £2k-£5k coupes:

Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo - stunning looking and exhilarating on the right road

Peugeot 406 Coupe - prettier than its '406' model name would suggest, and effortless in 3.0-litre V6 guise

VW Corrado VR6 - hugely underrated when new in the UK, and decent value now.

Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0 - glorious V6 makes up for any typically Alfa shortcomings

Or if you fancy a proper classic...

Jaguar XJ-S 3.6 Coupe - grab as late a model as possible (late Eighties in super nick at £5k) and enjoy a real 'grand touring' experience

julianphillips April 3, 2009 4:50 PM

Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo - stunning looking and exhilarating on the right road  Ditto for the 16V Turbo and the 20V normally aspirated.  Plus the interior is awesome

North April 3, 2009 4:54 PM

I have found a split mint condition e28 528i se for smack on £5K

There are some cracking (original) minis for under £5K...I found a really amazing one the other day (she was ace!)..that was smack on £5K!!

Dan McNeil April 3, 2009 5:01 PM

Lancia Beta Coupe (which looks like a two door saloon), or the Beta HPE (which looks like a coupe but is in fact an estate).

Lancia Gamma Coupe (not sure if any of these actually still exist)

Reliant Scimitar GTE SE5A (comments as per Beta HPE).

Ford Capri 2.8.

sotw April 3, 2009 5:03 PM

Porsche 968(leggy) or 944 Turbo (plenty to choose from)

Paul123 April 3, 2009 5:07 PM

@ Dan McNeil:

"Lancia Gamma Coupe (not sure if any of these actually still exist)"

There are still a few around - but not many, as they were like hen's teeth in the UK even when new. But the remaining survivors (coupe and saloon) are well looked after by the Gamma Consortium - www.gammaconsortium.com.

An incredibly oddball car - but amen to that, it being from the tail end of the era when Lancias were individual, characterful, beautiful and, yes, sometimes downright eccentric.

superstevie April 3, 2009 5:21 PM

"Apparently Smarts count as coupes, too, but not as far as I’m concerned."

What about the roadster-coupe? could easily get one of them within the 5k budget

James Ruppert April 3, 2009 5:35 PM

So far everyone is right, yes I do like the little Smartie roadster and have said so in the past. Reliant Scimitar is my guilty pleasure in all this and I will have to buy one soon to get it out of my system...

Zeddy April 3, 2009 6:00 PM

James, you have fallen for the press blurb. Since when did a 3 door hatch back become a coupe?

You then have the cheek to dismiss the Smart!

North April 3, 2009 6:01 PM

I had forgotten about Ford Capri.....there is a Brooklands on Autotrader for £3,999

Peter Cavellini April 3, 2009 6:03 PM

As the saying goes beauty is in the eye of the beholder, come on te current 6 series isn,t exactly a right minger and old 6 series are just that OLD!,they need more care and give you grey hair daily!.No, i'd sooner take my chances with a 15K 6 series than 3K/5K OLD 6 series, better built, better fuel consumption, cleaner engine too i bet, more road tax even if its OLD!, it won't handle as well, and when you dispose of it it will be to the scrapyard because nobody will want it !

NiallOswald April 3, 2009 7:06 PM

The old 6 series is about a million times cooler than the new one though. Plus they sound great.

superstevie April 3, 2009 7:34 PM

"yes I do like the little Smartie roadster and have said so in the past."

I know you have, which was why i wondered why you counted it out, unless you meant the fortwo...

I've had 3 roadsters, brilliant cars (if you get a good one that doesn't leak all over the electrics...)

Anyways, had a look on auto trader. 1991 Corvette 5.7V8 for 4899 anyone? 93 Nissan 300ZX for 4995? or a 97 Mitsubishi 3000GT for 4995??

North April 3, 2009 8:02 PM

I just found a 160 Racecar MGF for £4995 did not even know they did them in race cars!

MK1 GTi for £2700, a TR7(!!) £2800, a Ford Corsair Rally car! £4250, BMW 2002 for £2750, an ex russian military bike and side car £3150 (a bit different!!)...a merc 450 SLC £3600, a mint Cortina mk2 £3850..

Anyway, check out..."car and classic" .co.uk.....whiz in the 2.5-5K bracket....thers loads of totally different stuff!!!

Dan McNeil April 3, 2009 8:30 PM

A few more classic coupes James...

Opel Monza 3.0 and the similar Vauxhall Royale Coupe.

Nice old cruisers both (as long as you can stand classic 1980s velour), well built, long-lasting and powerful straight-sixes.

Mark 1 Vauxhall Cavalier Coupe and Sporthatch; and the similar Opel Manta.   Good, solid RWD cars.

A forgotten gem...Alfasud Sprint Veloce.

Dan McNeil April 3, 2009 8:32 PM

@ Paul 123

Thanks for that Gamma link, always loved Lancias.

Dan McNeil April 3, 2009 8:36 PM

A smidgin over your limit James, but there's a Jensen Interceptor on Autotrader for £5.9k

Dan McNeil April 3, 2009 8:59 PM

Sorry, you've got me going now...

1979 DATSUN CHERRY FII 120A COUPE

(£2,695 on Autotrader)

Volvo 262C

Toyota Crown Coupe

Suzuki SC100 Whizzkid

Mazda 929 Coupe

James Ruppert April 3, 2009 11:15 PM

This is getting interesting. I do love those rubbish Japanese coupes and the Swedish one. And I would buy a Datsun Cherry instantly. Oh gawd a Jensen Interceptor for that, I'm off to look at that right now. I still love the old 6. I do spend a lot of time on Car and Classic and nearly bought a Bristol. Oh yes and Vauxhall Royale I once took in part exchange against a BMW 728i...

julianphillips April 4, 2009 8:17 AM

What about the AMC Matador?!?

FlashBastd April 4, 2009 10:50 AM

Ford Puma? You could get a pair of late examples for £5k! Or a Racing without any difficulty.

Dan McNeil April 4, 2009 11:28 AM

I've a Bristol James, a rather worn Beaufighter.

Another Jap coupe is the Datsun 180B SSS.  Saw one a few weeks ago, really took me back.  These Datsuns were so exotic compared to the dull Fords and Vauxhalls and BL horrors of the day.   Talking of BL, have you ever come across a Leyland P76?  I saw one once in OZ, awesome looking beast, a bit gawky looking, but, wow.

superheater April 4, 2009 12:35 PM

What about a mid-90s BMW 318iS?  These had the 140 bhp engine if memory serves.  You can still get good runners of these and change from your 5k.

sorrel April 4, 2009 1:03 PM

Some under £5K coupes I like:

Mitsubishi FTO

Nissan Skyline (90s)

Toyota Celica

But mostly, I hanker after a mid 90s Camaro or Trans Am!  great looks, great sound!

hjww April 4, 2009 1:53 PM

How can the Porsche 928 be ignored? £5k buys a tidy S4; 320bhp V8 in a stunning, fabulously engineered shell. It'll even do 25mpg on a run and has a good loadbed under the hatchback. Not many cars have a clean sheet design like the 928 - only the gearbox is shared with anything else as far as I know.

BrynTurbo April 4, 2009 5:30 PM

Audi S2, anyone? '93 on a K, 80k miles £3995

BrynTurbo April 4, 2009 5:34 PM

1983 A Reg LOTUS Excel 2.2 FH 2+2 £3,000

kerrecoe April 4, 2009 6:35 PM

Much respect to Dan McNeill for mentioning the 180B SSS. I had one of these as one of my first cars (my mate had a 120Y and we all seemed to get into gnarly old Dachsunds because of it). The 180B really was exotic in some weird way- I absolutely loved it. It was a nightmare to drive and the constant smell of petrol coming from beneath the back seat bench was a little disconcerting. Those were the days...

kerrecoe April 4, 2009 6:39 PM

At the time I had the 180B i'd have killed for a Karmann Ghia of any variety or one of those odd little 914's- I expect they're valuable these days? I was partial to those bonkers Subaru coupe's from that late 70's early 80's era too.

How about a nice Marina Coupe? No, you're right- better off sticking a fork in your eye.

julianphillips April 4, 2009 8:20 PM

Subaru XT!

julianphillips April 4, 2009 8:23 PM

Actually sod the XT, what about the Subaru SVX?  £5K gets you possibly one of the most exclusive coupe's in the UK, with four wheel drive, 3.3 litre flat 6 engine, weird NASCAR style side windows, futuristic styling, loads of gadgets, Guigiaro styling, etc etc

Also the Delfini Feroce, Panther Solo and Panther Six Cabrio should be considered!

Dan McNeil April 4, 2009 10:53 PM

Thanks kerrecoe.

Another cool Datsun coupe...the Skyline 240K GT.

James Ruppert April 4, 2009 11:07 PM

This is going better than I'd hoped, I nearly bought an SVX in a moment of madness. Toyota Sera I have a brochure on one of those. Marina Coupe my Dad had a loan one in 1970 something or other and it was dismal, and yes I have confused hatchbacks with coupes, but I still like C4s.

Dan McNeil April 4, 2009 11:34 PM

Although the Marina (and the Marina Coupe) was essentially rubbish (it being based on a 1948 car - the Morris Minor), it (the Coupe at least) looked almost cool.

When fitted with fancy wheels (Wolfraces were particularly flattering), it could look almost mean.  It could also sound mean as well, especially the 1.8 TC version (as also fitted to the hopeless MGB).

That low-revving, long-stroke motor sounded like you'd expect a 4 cylinder V8 to sound, especially if you had a stainless-steel exhaust system.

Even it's dashboard was a lesson in unpretentious minimalism, making modern Audi fascias seem gaudy (as indeed they are).

With my rose-tinted glasses, I'm ignoring the fact that the Marina Coupe (particularly in heavy-nosed 1.8 TC guise) basically flung itself off the road as soon as you turned the wheel.

Dan McNeil April 4, 2009 11:49 PM

I suppose if you care to define a coupe as "a look" rather than by its number of doors, then the ultimate coupe has to be the Citroen CX.

julianphillips April 5, 2009 4:44 AM

I just saw a 2-door BMW 5-series (last generation) pick-up/yute in Cobham, Surrey!  Reminded me of the Holden Maloo and sort of counts as a Coupe!  Might cost more than £5k though.

I must re-iterate the Panther Six for consideration - how many other coupes have the massive 'benefit' of six wheels??

Dan McNeil April 5, 2009 10:04 AM

@ julianphillips

Panther Six...very cool.  Never seen one in the metal, mind you.   Any idea if there's a old road test report out there?

julianphillips April 6, 2009 11:07 AM

Yes that would be interesting.  I'd also be interested to read reviews of the Subaru SVX and XT....can anyone help?  Can Mr Ruppert post a couple of back issues??

julianphillips April 6, 2009 11:08 AM

Wikipedia say it was powered by a mid-mounted 8.2 L Cadillac V8 engine with twin turbochargers!!!

James Ruppert April 6, 2009 3:08 PM

I’m lucky enough to own a wacky and wonderful Subaru SVX and want to do some very basic servicing myself. How do I replace the spark plugs? It looks tricky to me.

This is something I know how to do oddly and answered a readers query about 10 years ago...all the best James

It looks difficult, but SVX owners have told us that you should firstly remove the battery and battery box. There is a small access panel in each wheel well. Removing these allows access to the rear plugs. Then for each cylinder, remove the bolt that holds the coil in place. Be very careful when removing the wiring and coil so as not to damage them. Now you can remove the spark plug. Obviously don’t overtighten and as all the best workshop manuals tell you, refitting is the reverse of the procedure.

julianphillips April 6, 2009 3:19 PM

Eh?

Alastair Inglis April 6, 2009 7:22 PM

You'll be lucky to find much on the XT. I had the misfortune to inherit one taken as a px by my predecessor as sales manager. The car was faultless. However at the time - in the late 1980s - the car was what was called a 'curate's egg'. Lurid wedge design with a typically late 80s tacky plastic interior with the exotic addition of a couple of 4wd levers. My recommendation is not to drive one briskly as a colleague did, and then shift the transfer lever (i think). The bang seems to remind most people of a hand grenade going off. Must have been a lot of miltary types in lancaster in 1989. Anyway we were spared the humiliation of blocking it as the roof over the used car forecourt collapsed and the XT was one of the vehicles written off by the damage. I always remember the car reminded me of a paper plane...

Peter Cavellini April 6, 2009 9:49 PM

Hey Niall!

I can run my 530i M- SPORT FOR £50  a month!

IMSA April 7, 2009 2:37 PM

Volvo C70 from the late 90s/early 00s with leather and an LPT turbo.  Great long-distance cruiser.
