Chasing down a major Mini deal

James Ruppert
This weekend I dare you all to go and have a great big adventure down at a nearby Mini showroom to see what they have in store to tempt you. And I’d love to hear how you get on.

A reader has been doing this for several weeks now, and he initially found that local dealers did not offer much in the way of a discount so, in the spirit of Mini adventure, he started to look further afield, paying particular attention to two-year-old cars.

It was a frustrating game for our man, though, as the cars were either very expensive (Cooper D on 57 plate £13,500) or, in his view, had boring colour schemes (not a fan of the all-black interiors, apparently).

But his persistence paid off because, wandering fifty miles from home, he found a car poised to be registered as a dealer demo. It was white with black bonnet stripes, an ’08-style chilli pack, lots of extras (cruise control, usb port, bluetooth, headlamp washers, and interior pack with black and white leather).

Since the car was already paid for by the dealer, they offered a discount of £1800 (£1000 off for a half-price chilli pack, courtesy of BMW and the remainder from the dealer), and did the deal for £15,000. The good news is that he’s keeping the car for at least five years, so will get plenty of use out of it.

Looking forward, then, to hearing your own unscientific findings and seeing if anyone actually does drive home in a Mini this weekend. Especially if a dealer has makes them an offer that’s difficult to refuse.

About James Ruppert

Used to sell BMWs, but he's no yuppie; has a '64 Mini Cooper in his garage and a '57 BSA Bantam in his house. Has bought and sold hundreds of used cars, and he isn't finished yet.

Be careful with early R56 Cooper S cars as the engines can rattle from the timing chain and VANOS and Mini GB know of this issue.  Be prepared to have the car off the road for some time while the clueless dealer tells you there is no problem. Then when you have become bored with the dealers incomptetence sell the car and move on

Is James Ruppert friendly with BMW?....just seen that he used to sell BMWs.......I guess he has friends in the trade....I wonder if they are stuggling?

Seems like a massive advert for BMW to try and get loads of people into dealers and shift all the ex-estate agent minis.....maybe if BMW cut the prices of their cars instead they would have better luck selling them.....that's right, they cannot as their cost structures will not allow them too......

Bye, bye BMW!!....bye, bye Mini.....

I wonder if James R is going to run the same advert for Ford, GM, Honda etc etc etc

@North: conspiracy theories are alive and well in your universe I see.

North March 8, 2009 1:43 PM

Zeddy; no conspirancy theory at all.......just wondered why it was focused on minis and not say small cars in general.....then I noticed James sold BMWs.....you do not think that questioning potential conflict of interest is fair with regards to what you are reading; i do......

Things should be transparent in all walks of life or are you saying that you should not question anything and anyone that does is a "trouble maker"?......are you some sort of time warper....?....freedom of speech....right to ask questions.....(its been around for years now, maybe you are 900 years old and been in a coma or something?); its a public place and the guys journalistic integrity.....what's wrong with asking the question?...nothing.....and justifiable.....did he mention A Class (no), Corsa (No), Clio (No) etc....its a fair question, ye olde worlde Zeddy

"did he mention A Class (no), Corsa (No), Clio (No) etc....its a fair question, ye olde worlde Zeddy "

I'll take a fair punt that he's mentioned all those cars at some point or another in the last 18 months either online or in his various magazine contributions.

This post is about Mini, but it's hardly the only blog Mr Ruppert has made, there have been countless others on all makes and model of car.

So he used to sell BMWs? Does that mean he's no longer allowed to report on their products? You'd be hard pressed to find a car market correspondant worth his salt that hadn't at some point taken a paycheque from a franchised dealer of some form or another.

If you go back through his back catalogue of posts, articles and books I doubt you'll find any evidence of a conspiracy beyond trying to get people a good deal.

15k for a diddy little car- and you think its good value- lol

James Ruppert March 9, 2009 10:53 PM

For goodness sake I go away for a few days and come back to find that the whole world has gone mad. I sold BMWs when E30s were brand new for goodness sake. As has been observed this is a Blog about a particular make. You can have all the conspiracy theories you like but no manufacturer can tell anyone here, especially me, what to write. Calm down. I 'll be more generic next week.

Also if you read my column in the magazine it wasn't remotely pro BMW.

Zeddy March 10, 2009 8:24 PM

James, you can't do that! Don't you know this site and its mag are Alfa-hating, Ford-worshipping, BMW devotees.

Some people come on here just to moan about it. God forbid they might want to talk rationally about the blogs or reviews!

And I don't know how to end a question (?)
