Green Trumps

James Ruppert

Is nothing sacred? Top Trumps is going green apparently, and I am therefore forced to quote the following: “Whereas engine size and horsepower used to be winning features on the key trump cards, now lowest CO2 emissions, fuel efficiency and greatest number of seats are superior. So, out go the Porsches and the Ferraris and in come hybrids and electric motors.”

That’s the official line from climate change charity, whatever that is, Marches Energy Agency who have developed this with the Top Trumps people. So that’s even worse because these cards are official. And the horror doesn’t stop there because a pack of them will be sent free to every Secondary school in the country. Surely in the interests of balance, a proper full fat set should be sent too so the kids can decide for themselves.

It gets even worser than worse because 21st century role model and England goal keeper David James’s Chrysler is being used as the lead motor simply because it uses plant oil. Two points there deforestation and isn’t this the same Mr James who recently owned an eco-friendly GT40?

Obviously we are all paying for this as it is part funded by the EU, but it is depressing that a whole generation of youngsters will have some dismal picture of a hybrid MPV on their bedroom walls. It is our duty then to counter this propaganda by standing outside our local schools and handing out Athena prints of Countachs before it is too late.

Nanny state gone mad.

The Top Trump folk are all green band wagon jumping, yoghurt knitting chumps who should know better than to mess with a winning formula.

I used to love this game when at school.

I had occasion to contact the manufacturers of top trumps a couple of years ago. I enquired of them why they didn't release a 'classic' range which just about every bloke over forty would buy.

They were kind enough to reply saying they considered there was no market for this and based all their packs on current brands/trends.

This 'pressure group creep' is getting on my nerves. Why are they getting a pack released when you could equally do an updated one of the classic games? I hate the way pressure groups never let facts get in the way of a bit of coercion.

Spot on Alistair and Jon, the world has gone mad and I seem to remember a couple of years ago that Autocar did a special version which my daughter still plays with. A Classic one is a brilliant idea, so if they won't do it lets do our our version online or something? At least we can have some fun over Christmas...

Hey guys I just got my copy from the charity on ebay and I think its a great adaptation of the game. I've got the old F1 pack and some of the rally versions from the 80s, and this just seems like a logical progression to me. What are you all so scared of? Chin up chaps.

With all the news coming from Bali I'm surprised James was bold enough to get his head out of the sand long enough to write this blog entry - looking at the predictions for the future of the oil supply & the climate I'll be glad if the next generation don't have to settle for 'Horse and Cart' Top Trumps; and given that most of them won't get a chance to drive anything that isn't electric/hybrid I think sending a 'full fat' set to the schools would just be unfair, or at least only of use in history class!

Also, as Top Trumps are producing shameless cash in packs like 'Power Rangers Mystic Powers' & 'High School Musical' I'm just glad this eco set features cars at all and I don't really see why it has been singled out for all this fuss. However I do think a 'Classics' set is a great idea, sure to sell well!

If the packs i bought in the 70s were available now I'd buy the lot and have hours of fun playing with my 6 yr old son. he might not have such a good time but i would. Remember 'Prototypes', 'World record Breakers', 'Cars', 'Super Cars', 'Tanks', 'Rally Cars', and all the military stuff and the motorbikes. Or how about a hot hatches one.

As far as my son is concerned a car needs to have at least 'twin exhausties' to muster any sort of credibility.  I have two sets of modded car ones from Max power in the 1990s.

How exactly do you play top trumps with 'high school musical'? Or 'Bratz' for that matter. Just a thought...

Sadly I do know how to play the High School Musical one and it's bizarre like talent instead of bhp etc....it's awful, you should be head of TT marketing right now - J

Finally autoki.de - a german car community is here to save the world from stupid EU financed crap. We just compiled this online car game where still horsepower and enginesize are counting.

Help us to spread it throughout the internet.

Science, nature and engineering teaches us there is nothing wrong with size or consumption but it does teach us about efficiency and effectiveness.

There is nothing 'wrong' with a 420bhp sportcar just as there's nothing 'wrong' with an 80bhp Fita 500.

Just as there's nothing wrong with a Blue Whale and a Red Salmon 22,000 times smaller.

It's not the resources you use or how much you consume. So long as you're efficient and/or effective.

Take the enviromental message to it's end-game and there would be no life on Earth.. just lots of lovely resources sitting in the ground.
