Panamera: looking good

Chas Hallett

The Porsche Panamera is the latest in a long line of cars that I really should have waited to see in the metal before I really made a judgement.

In all the early pics I thought that it looked ungainly and undesirable and too much like an awkwardly elongated 911.

But I've just seen it at the media unveiling, 95 floors up in a Shanghai hotel ahead of Monday's motorshow. The verdict? It's not a rip-roaring beauty but it looks 300 per cent better than in any pic you've seen. It's long, low and looks especially svelte from the rear three-quarters, which, considering the performance of the Turbo version, is the view we're most likely to see.

The cabin, though, is the real treat. It's way more luxurious than anything Porsche has produced before and much higher quality too.

The company wants to sell 20,000 of these things every year. I now think that's not going to be a problem, even if Porsche can no longer gurarantee the support of the hedge fund buyers.

I wonder whether, like other carmagazines, AutoCar really has become some kind of a would-be fashion or gossip magazine.

Why on earth do you guys constantly feel the need to tell me and other readers what a car looks like and whether you like it or not?

The fact that I can read all that crap does indeed proof that I do have eyes for myself. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? Hence, I (and any reader) can probably decide by myself (him/her)self whether or not I (he/she) like(s) what I (he/she) see(s).

So why do you journalists keep going on about styling? It really is awfully annoying!

Plaese do add some content to your writings, please. And finally, you guys just might end up writing something of which quality comes close to that of the worst car you guys have ever driven.

By the way: personally, I am everything but a Porsche fan. I do like the Panamera's looks though.

Why would you visit an auto enthusiast website and then decry the author’s right to have an opinion? The purpose of the website is to generate conversation about everything automotive, including styling. I think the Panamera is hideous as is the Rapide, this fixation with turning sports cars into family haulers is the real madness.

Not keen on the Panamera but what interests me is something else.

How on earth did they get it to the 95th floor?

Do the latest Chinese skyscrapers have super-sized lifts or was there some other form of cleverness involved - e.g. disassembly and reassembly?

- why didn't Chas think to ask that?

From AMS:

In the 100-story Shanghai World Financial Center otherwise known as the Mori building they built an elevator that can carry a car up to the top.  Originally a luxury brand showroom was going to be on the top but that didn't pan out.  There's a special rig in the elevator.  The car is hoisted on its nose and ratcheted so it sits on its hind wheels up-right inside the elevator and carried to the 94th floor where the ball room is.

And I saw the Panamera at the show and liked it.  As the man said, its luxury plus Porsche.
