Geneva show: Saab's triumph

Steve Cropley

Saab had a hard job, kicking off the Geneva Show with a bang, against a bevy of interesting announcements that included Porsche’s probable acquisition of Volkswagen. But it just about took the honours for biggest bang on Monday, even though its Italian-built concept completely missed a 1pm practice reveal - because the paint was still drying - and arrived without electrics.

But there was something triumphant about the manner of GM’s execs, led inevitably by the amazing and ageless Bob Lutz, because at last they had something that they could honestly say would lead to car sales. And which showed that their custodianship of the enigmatic Swedish brand truly meant something. The car looked great, but especially it looked believable. You could see people - even young people - going for it in droves. That is a mighty step forward.
