All change at Merc?

Chas Hallett
The news that Wolfgang Bernhard is going to head up Merc’s van division and production caught my eye.
Bernhard, you see, is a disciple of Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche. The old man took him to Detroit to help run Chrysler after the Daimler Chrysler merger, and Bernhard also has run the VW brand and, ironically, been integral in Cerberus’s takeover of Chrysler when Daimler abandoned ship.

The reason his appointment caught my eye is that there have been a lot of rumours that Zetsche won’t be running Merc for too much longer. It's nothing to do with his effectiveness as the boss, mind you, but tragically his wife has recently lost a battle with cancer. And who could blame him for feeling differently about work after such a loss?

So perhaps Bernhard is being groomed to be his replacement. One thing’s for sure, Wolfgang has a reputation for being fiery and uncompromising. He was, after all, being lined up to run Merc’s car division in 2004 but a row with then-boss Juergen Schrempp ruled him out. His undoing at VW was the result of a big falling-out with Bernd Pichetsrieder because Bernhard wanted more radical restructuring plans that the board or unions would swallow.

I’ve also got some personal experience of his personality. He once told me that he didn’t think any cars would be made in Western Europe within 20 years (maybe best keep that quiet in Stuttgart for a while) and while at VW, he pretty much walked out of an interview with me and European editor Greg Kable because we were asking him about the company’s sports car plans.

There's no doubt that Bernhard’s got a good track record, though. But if he does land the big job soon you can probably expect radical changes to in the Daimler empire.

Hopefully a new generation of solidly built mercs with relaible durable parts will come with this new chief.

Return to the historical merc ''carved from rock'' feel.

About time too.

I thought IG Metall is hell bent against Bernhard. Hard to imagine him being groomed as a successor without IG Metall's backing.

Merc van Division?

Didn't he write the theme to Van der Valk?

I'm always interested in succession planning and how seriously companies actually take it. How does it actually occur? Does the board really sit down and talk about who will succeed them? Is this proper corporate governance to model a company in your own image - surely it should be the best man for the job, someone who may be even better than you are?

This chap's personality seems lacking based on Chas' article. He's fallen out with every boss he's worked for. Why would he possibly be considered for the top job? Chas - maybe you can shed some light on this? What is it about him, outside of the negative parts of his personality, that would qualify him for the top job? Is it the work he did at Chrysler?

Despite Bernhard's thorny personality a lot of people I have talked to rate him as a bloke who 'gets things done'. He's particularly good at manufacturing cost savings apparently. Not the sort of savings that compromise quality - just efficiencies. He's also tough on union negotiations too and was constantly annoyed whilst at VW at the stranglehold they had on Wolfsburg. He, for instance, wanted to make the Tiguan in Portugal rather than Germany - something would would have saved 1800 euros per car he told me. The Scirocco did get made in Portugal thanks to him - and I haven't noticed that it's inferior in any way to a Golf.

The personality thing may be a problem when you are No.2 in the organisation but once that sort of person gets to be No.1, they are often able to implement their "Big Plan"  and do in fact become very effective. There have been the odd spectacular failures, of course, particularly in Germany - think Wendelin Weidekind or a certain Herr Hitler from a while back..........

Thanks Chas. Interesting article.

Portugese Mercs, hmmmm....interesting. Well honestly dont think people would care much now a days especially if they're saving a packet.

They already are if mine is anything to go by. Lightyears ahead of the awful plastic boxes they pushed out in the 90s.

E.g., Tony Blair/Gordon Brown.....oh!

I second you, Mart_J. The Merc of the past 4 years or so are much better built than those of the late 90s, as a result of high investment in ensuring both high production quality and also to ensure that each model is constructed well.

One of their plants (the German Stuttgart one if I'm not mistaken) was awarded by the American JD Power survey the Platinum award (highest award possible) for the factory producing cars with the least number of faults; meanwhile the C-Class was tested over 15 million miles and the E-Class over 20 million miles! Their dealerships are also getting much better, too.
