Citroen's credible supercar alternative

Mark Tisshaw

Anyone strolling around central London today may have got a surprise if they saw the Citroen GT supercar. The concept made a surprise appearance on UK asphalt, and I’m sure it would have turned more than a few heads with its muscular, yet futuristic appearance.

Here is an attempt by a firm with no supercar experience at trying something different - quite a bold move in the midst of a recession.

We quite often see small manufacturers trying to enter the supercar club with something seemingly created by a mad man in a shed.

See more pictures and read about the Citroen GT supercar

The odd looking Gumpert Apollo is one that initially springs to mind from recent years, the vastly powerful CCS Ultimate Aero is another. Excellent cars they may be, but you would have to be pretty brave to take a punt on one.

Established and evocative brands such as Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini seem to have so many different supercar bases covered, that no-one else with a credible reputation ever really seems to bother.

Audi is one exception, albeit a less surprising one with its track record of building desirable, yet expensive cars. The R8 has been a commercial and critical success for the firm, and its new V10 guise is sure to move the game on further.

Where I think Citroen will succeed with the GT where other smaller names have failed, is that it’s a name you can trust. Although Citroen isn’t renowned for its supercar efforts, it is firmly established in the UK as a recognised and respectable brand.

The Citroen GT looks handsome on the road, too. It’s not comically ugly and it already has lots of kudos after its appearance in the Gran Turismo Playstation game. If it makes production, which Citroen say is quite likely, I’m sure the quirky French firm will have no trouble shifting the 15 examples mooted for production.

If you weren’t one the lucky few who saw the Citroen GT supercar driving around Piccadilly Circus or past Buckingham Palace this morning, then you’ll get a chance to see it having a go up the famous hillclimb at next weekend’s Goodwood festival of Speed.

How could this car pass pedestrian impact tests? It has a front like a bacon slicer. Fine for the sad individuals who live in virtual reality , but a no-no in the real world.

Steelydan June 23, 2009 7:55 PM

Honestly, what kind of enviro-bore, anti-car-ist drone cares about bloody pedestrian impact tests? In the "real world", people would have common sense and understand that if you get hit by a solid metal object travelling at speed that you are going to get hurt. On this basis, probably best to exercise some care rather than blaming the driver of a car for your injuries!

This is just a concept car with no production plans, right? So what makes it so bold? Surely the cost to develop a one-off concept, even a runner and in the recession, is nothing significant for such a big company.

More to the point, surely it's a good move as plenty of people are likely to be downsizing to Citroen's market sector and something like this could be good publicity to draw them to the brand.

What a completely stupid looking car. Why do so many people who quite obviously have absolutely no design talent whatsoever end being car designers? Search the web for concept car renderings and you'll find many great looking cars. Unfortunately very few of them come from car manufacturers but most are the work of talented individuals. Wake up car manufacturers, do some Googling and find the real talent out there.

Vertigo - he just said in the blog that Citroen are putting this into limited production! I think it looks great, and it doesn't look 'stupid'. I've seen it in the metal, and it looks brilliant.

jackjflash June 23, 2009 10:34 PM

It looks like a Tesla S ran through a Lambo.

jonfortwo June 24, 2009 8:43 AM

Non, Non, Non this is about as alluring as a stale baguette and a glass of Piat d`or. Sacre bleu!!

kerrecoe June 24, 2009 8:44 AM

Honestly- some people don't even bother to read an article before they start whinging on about it. Pathetic.

I think it's an incredible looking car. It also seems like a smart idea to splash a bit of cash on a car like this to create a bit of a buzz around Citroen when everyone else is cutting back. It will also serve to raise expectations of what Citroen can do and what they stand for. Proper halo.

And they didn't use Maserati to develop it? Blimey.

jonfortwo June 24, 2009 9:00 AM

Oh Kerrecoe, I read before i wrote, I re-read, then i wrote, i then re-read. I DO NOT LIKE.

Its not pathetic, it is a different point of view.

Vertigo June 24, 2009 9:34 AM

Mini1 - oops, I don't know how I'd missed that. Still, as was said in the blog, they won't have any trouble shifting 15 cars, even in the recession.

Lee23404 June 24, 2009 11:45 AM

Stunning car. Full scale production would be a mistake but they shouldn't have too much troubleshifting 15.

If I were stupidly rich and had more money than sense I'd buy one just to hang on the wall and look at it.

kerrecoe June 24, 2009 11:55 AM

Jonfortwo- I wasn't suggesting that Vertigo's opinion was pathetic, just his inability to read an article before he moans about it. Perhaps that went over your head?

I respect your opinion very much Jon...

Vertigo June 24, 2009 6:03 PM

Kerrecoe - I did read it actually, like I said I don't know how I managed to miss that line. But how about you calm down and not flame me for an honest mistake? It's not like my post contained anything to take offence over.

'..........it already has lots of kudos after its appearance in the Gran Turismo Playstation game.'

In that case I'm cancelling my order for the Ferrari California and just hoping I'll be near the top of the list for it!

jonfortwo June 25, 2009 9:28 AM

Thankfully they are only making six, so you will definitely be in the top 10

In a market where Citroen struggles to get noticed or even remembered, this is actually just what the doctor ordered.

Even if only 6 are ever produced, this outlandish sports car will put Citroen on the map - perhaps even posters on the walls of teenagers.  And nobody would really care if it does split a pedestrian in half.

To date, Citroen has produced some really memorable and beautiful cars like the SM, DS, CX and C6, but they never quite appealed across every age group.  I believe this Citroen GT does.
