What's the coolest people carrier ever?

Ollie Stallwood
So the new Peugeot 5008 takes influence from the 505 does it? Well, apart from the fact it has a lot of seats and is a Peugeot you’d be hard pressed to see the similarity.

But that’s perhaps not a bad thing unless you really want a new Peugeot that is as long as a bendy bus and has seating for eight, with the back three moderately more comfortable than if they were sitting on the roof.

However that’s not to put the 505 estate down – it’s legendary, and almost everyone must have been in one at some point. Family friends of ours had a big tribe and needed something large to transport them.

In those days (and I’m not saying when, but the revival of that period has come and gone) there was little choice apart from a Transit van, and the Peugeot was perfect for getting everyone in.

Another experience with a 505 was when I arrived in Egypt from Israel and saw decades old examples lined up along the border, ready to cram as many people in as possible. I dread to think what the record was.

It’s interesting now to look at the 5008, or any people carrier for that matter, and see how things have moved on in terms of packaging and size. There's multiple folding seats, tables, reclining rows, TVs in headrests – and endless choice.

But the 505 was one of the first, and quite possibly one of the coolest, people carriers around.

Yes the back was uncomfortable true - but this was more then made up for by the ability to make rude gestures to following old ladies - ah the sun dappled joys of youth...

MrTrilby June 2, 2009 1:43 PM

My money is on the Citroen CX for being both one of the earliest and coolest people carriers ever made. Fantastic cars.

Casanova June 2, 2009 2:00 PM

Trilby is right - the CX is even cooler.  Happy memories from a few summers ago of a battered French one with no handbrake that got parked next to a cliff every day.  It steamed up and down the windy mountain road, coming back to the top with four hangliders on the roof, 9 people and luggage inside...

TegTypeR June 2, 2009 2:34 PM

505 for me.  Built like a brick out house and will go on forever.  They were also classless as a car.  Farmers, Lords and Ladies or just the working class family who had too many kids owned them.  There really isn't a car like it any more, no matter what Peugeot say about the 5008.  Shame.

Orangewheels June 2, 2009 2:41 PM

Not even close - you're meant to debating  people carriers or MPV's and how cool they are, nor early estates and how good they were.

The VW Camper was the original and best MPV, and was and still is a million miles cooler that anything mentioned here.

An early splittie with a few surfboards strapped to the roof, parked on some sun-drenched Californian beach is leagues beyond a Pug 505 parked on the Egyptian border with 8 people crammed in or on it.

Plus the Camper was actually multi-functional, so fulfilled the MPV tag properly rather than just having combinations of folding seats.

People carriers are not cool

Richard H June 2, 2009 2:47 PM

A VW camper is a camper and not a people carrier, it just happens to be able to carry people

Howey June 2, 2009 2:52 PM

coolest people carrier ever has surely got to be a current model  the Ford S-max .

coolest estate ? - a W124 estate

know what you mean about 505's and Eygyot, i was in cairo last august and there were thousands of the them still operating as taxis and i passed countless roadside garages full of 505's with engines out and all manner of repairs going on at

the roadside....quite a sight !

ordinary bloke June 2, 2009 2:54 PM

People carriers are not cool and never can be. They are either mini-cabs or bought by people who have been saddled with more kids than they ever planned to have. The words "cool" and "people carrier" should never be used in conjunction with each other.

A R Chen June 2, 2009 3:10 PM

The Peugeot 505 Estate/Break was great considering its humble but very capable underpinnings.  When it came to doing just about any job, there were precious few rivals that could touch it.  Don't forget the rear drive chassis that allowed it to entertain as well.  So to many, that would indeed be 'kewl' - get it right!

bangertastic June 2, 2009 3:25 PM

Yes the 505 was nice. My Dad had one (base spec, beige, estate). An absolute beast of a car. My friends Dad had the 505 GTI Estate, I remember being in the back seats of it as a kid and thinking how fast it was. I can't remember the last time I saw one in the UK.

If we are talking cool people carriers the Renault Espace F1 was awesome, although I think only one was ever made and it couldn't be used on the road.

Dave52 June 2, 2009 3:32 PM

Had a Citroen Safari 21. Used to travel everywhere with 3 students in the front 3 in the middle and 2 in the sideways seats in the rear - they used to land on top of one another if I went round the bendy bits too fast. That was probably cool. Pity we called her Gertrude though. You could get her back from 90° to direction of travel though.

TheOmegaMan June 2, 2009 3:45 PM

The 505 GTI Family Estate was the second best Peugeot ever. 8 seats in an estate, with some room to spare. That makes it infinitely superior to all the van shaped MPVs family motorists have to endure these days.

The best Peugeot ever was the 505 V6 Turbo.

tommallett June 2, 2009 4:05 PM

Daddy cool......

Probably a 300te with 7 seats for me. Not sure how cool it is but that's what I'd have.

W124 June 2, 2009 4:35 PM

505 V6t  - right on...  604 with the same engine. Top quality.  Does anybody know where I can buy a 604? It's subjective but, to me at least, VW campers are the least cool vehicles in existence.

Coolest people carrier? - why the Mitsi Space Wagon of course...

tony2x June 2, 2009 4:49 PM

I'm going to choose the car that sits on my driveway but it applies to any load lugger equipped with a blower made by this manufacturer...

Yes, it is a Subaru and specifically the Legacy 2.5GT Limited 'Wagon'.  I live in the US where estate car is a dirty word and as a result you can only get your load lugging desires satisfied by the SUV-clad Outback.

But Subaru have been making cool Q-car estates for years.  Mine is dark blue and pushing about 410hp after a few subtle internal modifications.  There is nothing quite as satisfying as blowing off a M3/S4 at the traffic light grand prix.

Sadly the new Legacy estate is not coming here, you can get it in Canada and they all roll of the same assembly line in Indiana but here in the US we must soldier on only with the Outback.

TJ Hunter June 2, 2009 5:05 PM

Everyone is talking about the 505, but what about the 504 that preceded it? That was a seven seater too.

There were 5 of us growing up, and we had 2 x 504 estates. The headrests went flush into the seats so with all of the seats reclined it made a decent bed. And the plastic over the rear arch on the third row made a perfect parking place and ramp for your dinkies :-)

Uncle Mellow June 2, 2009 7:27 PM

As stated above , a few estates ( 504 - CX etc) have been quite cool , but there is NO SUCH THING as a cool people carrier. Carrying people can never be cool (Routemaster excepted )

I once had a few drives in a MK1 Renault Espace and it was without doubt the most awful contraption I have ever driven.

Citytiger June 2, 2009 8:27 PM

Surely this is the coolest

Mini1 June 2, 2009 8:35 PM

Citroen DS Safari, Citroen CX Safari, Citroen Berlingo Multispace/Peugeot Partner, Fiat Multipla and Honda FRV. All very cool indeed.

Griffin911 June 2, 2009 8:36 PM

The one that Top Gear tried to modify, haha

mercman93 June 2, 2009 9:20 PM

The Honda Odyssey

vidfletch June 2, 2009 9:36 PM

Aah! The Renault Avantime. A glorious failure. Utterly stupid but fantastic at the same time. I have a perverse liking for them and the Vel Satis and "shaking that ass" Megane!

streaky June 2, 2009 10:24 PM

TJ Hunter June 2, 2009 5:05 PM

Everyone is talking about the 505, but what about the 504 that preceded it? That was a seven seater too.

There was also the 404 Estate before that - I think Peugeot's first 7/8 seater.  I can remember being given lifts in one by a schoolmate's parents.

P1MUY June 2, 2009 11:57 PM

People Carrier and cool, better oxymoron than military intelligence.

ThwartedEfforts June 3, 2009 7:52 AM

Citroën CX Familiale seven-seater.

The Pug 505 was a fantastic and comfortable car like the bit Cit, but it also came at least five years later.

roadtester June 3, 2009 8:33 AM

505? Complete blx - there were the seven seat versions of the 404 and 504 before that. They were much cooler.

julianphillips June 3, 2009 9:18 AM

Talbot Matra

memyselfandi June 3, 2009 10:46 AM

Surely if the 8 seat 505 is being classed as a people carrier here, then thought should be given to the venerable Land Rover Defender 110, carries up to 12 and in all honesty, must be cooler than pretty much every other people carrier.  It's so cool even the army use it (not sure that is actually a good thing...)

ThwartedEfforts June 3, 2009 11:14 AM

If we're going to go back in time as far as the 404, then Citroen offered an even larger, air-suspended 8-seater Familiale version of what is arguably the most important mainstream car ever made.

Suffice it to say, the French were ahead of everyone and in so many ways. They were even offering a diesel variant of the Pug 404 in the 1960s.

I had many a pleasant and fun trip to Le Mans with mates in a 505 Estate.  In those days you could get close to the track and turn up on Friday and get a pitch at Camping Houx.

However, even cooler was the Toyota Picnic Sport we built a few years back. It was fitted with a TTE body-kit (no, they really made one), lowered and stiffened suspension, Camry Sport wheels and bespoke Connolly leather interior.

Under the bonnet was a Celica GT-4 engine giving about 200bhp to the front wheels.  The lack of a catalyst enabled flames to lick colourfully from the exhaust.  Most memorable trip I had in it was from Wick to Glasgow through the Greta Glen and past Loch Lomond.

I wiped the smile off many a boy racers day with that car.  It was sold to a dealer in Ireland for use as a rally support vehicle.

Rich boy spanners June 3, 2009 1:48 PM

I always laugh when people say people carriers are 'not cool'. They're not meant to be 'cool'. They're meant to do a job of carrying people, often their children, plus bikes and all other stuff. I know people who need a people carrier/large estate but refuse to buy them for image reasons and then have to leave half their packing behind when they go on holiday and can get the best part of nothing in the boot of an A4. If you choose a 'cool' car over the one you need what you really need is some self-confidence.

drivenfromtherearplease June 3, 2009 8:11 PM

I thought an Aeriel Atom was the coolest people carrier?

It's so darn cold in the winter and it seats two!

Loved the 404 and 505 est. Always remember them. Happened to pass a CX Pallas the other day and boy did it look good, they were fantastic too that Safari volume was vast.

I do believe the Mazda Bongo is rapidly becoming cool in the surfing comunity. Great name, so daft it has to be cool.

Uncle Mellow June 5, 2009 8:52 PM

Are there any Bongo owners out there - or even "Bongo Friendee" owners , who can explain why this vehicle has such a following? I am a big Mazda fan , but the Bongo was hardly their finest hour.

A R Chen June 8, 2009 7:01 AM

Mercman 93 is right - the current Honda Odyssey sold in Asia is actually a pretty well-rounded package.  I had a 2004 Odyssey and the 2.4 liter engine is indeed a gem.  Just needs better body control at high speeds and that CVT box is a bloody expensive thing to replace after just 40,000 km.  Otherwise, there is nothing else currently on sale that can beat it for packaging and style at a sensible price.  Mercedes should actually have looked at the Odyssey before it designed the RL.

taylork June 8, 2009 6:05 PM

mercedes R class is my personal favourite

senatorcherokee July 1, 2010 12:37 PM

I've got one, 2.5 non turbo diesel. Slow, ridiculously economical, all the complexity of a wood burning stove, and for sale.........
