Where else could Ariel's 3.0-litre V8 go?

Ollie Stallwood
Speaking to Ariel boss Simon Saunders yesterday about the Atom V8 engine got me thinking.

Because it is a small engine for an eight cylinder, made using parts of motorbike engines, in the back of my mind I thought it would be useless for application in anything that is not a featherweight track day car.

But Simon told me it would produce around 300 lb ft of torque, which isn’t huge for a V8 but perfectly acceptable for a normal performance road car. The new VW Scirocco R has 258 lb ft for example.

This got me daydreaming about a mainstream application for a normal car. A saloon or even a hatch with a 500 bhp 3.0-litre 32-valve V8 is a crazy idea but it is certainly a mesmerizing prospect.

Would it work? I don’t see why not, and the fact the engine is light at 90kgs would certainly help. And perhaps it’s not as unlikely as it sounds.

Who would have thought a few years ago the hot hatch to beat in 2009 would be a 300 bhp front-wheel drive Ford Focus?

Who would have thought it would be Renault Megane you won´t ever believe in that right?

Mid mounted in Lotus Exige, has to be fun!

It really depends on how reliable the engine is and if it needs a rebuild every 1500 miles at great expense like several track day cars such as the caterham R models do. In which case it wouldn't be suitable for any mainstream road car in its current guise.

I guess an Exige would be a tad over-powered by this engine, a better option would be mid-mounted in an Evora - maybe you would need to move the rear bulkhead forwards a few cms. to make room but - hey - that solves the problem of the useless rear seats ...

If they're looking for someone to act as a guinea pig, they're welcome to fit one to my Octavia Estate.

Put it in JCW MINI with a gearbox that could cope and good cooling would be needed

That mini would be such a had full and would sound EPIC!!!

Hello John Lennon of automotive design, I may think you’re a dreamer, but you’re not the only one. It would be more complex, more expensive; it is counter to the design philosophy of inexpensive mainstream transportation like front wheel drive hatches, hot or not. That being said it is the same sort of philosophy behind the 911; kind of like tarting up a VW Beetle so maybe it would work.

How is it cost effective for Ariel to build their own engine ? It is hardly cost effective for Lotus to build an engine , and it didn't do TVR any favours. If you put a Honda engine in an Ariel , and it goes bang ( very unlikely) you can get another one easily and relatively cheaply. You don't see many 3 litre V8s on Ebay.....

Smart?

Cost effective because it's 100k plus a pop
