Nissan GT-R: cheap at twice the price

Steve Sutcliffe

Went to Japan to drive the Nissan GTR last week, and you can read more about how good the car is in the mag this week (it’s a monster, and no mistake). But whilst out there I discovered something that shocked me; how cheap this new Nissan is in its own market, not just compared with how much it costs over here but compared with any rival available in Japan.

In Japan the new GT-R costs 7.7 million Yen (£31,000), while the new M3 costs around 12 million Yen (£48,000) and a Porsche 911 Turbo just under 20 million Yen (£80,000). Even the Corvette Z06 – previously the cheapest so-called supercar on sale in Japan – costs more than the new GT-R at a whisker under 9 million Yen (£36,000).

The idea of comparing a Corvette Z06 with the new GT-R in terms of a) technical sophistication and b) development costs is a little like comparing a £20 Casio watch with a Rolex Daytona. There IS no comparison. And yet Nissan Japan insists that it will still make money on each and every GT-R it sells, even the ones that are bought for £31,000 in Japan.

And by the way; if, on reading this, it occurs to you (as it did me) that it might be a smart idea to buy a new GT-R in Japan, stick it in a crate and flog it over here for a swift £20k profit, be warned. Nissan GB says it will punish majorly any one who tries to grey import new GT-R’s before the March 2009 official UK on sale date. And even after then, says Nissan, you won’t be allowed to sell them on at less than UK list price.

They wouldn’t be specific as to exactly how they’d do the punishing save to say that it’d be along the lines of the Tesco-Levi jeans saga whereby Tesco was forced to sell the brand at list price. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Come on Steve, it may thrash the pants off most of todays supercars but from certain angles its abit like a twentyfirst century Jaguar XJS - and silver does it no favours does it ?. I think the japanese have kind of strayed down the wrong road with this one kind of like BMW did with the new M3 .Rapid it may be but its not good enough to make my wish list - needs a better body- what do you think?

I'd love to know how Nissan think they can dictate the sale of imported vehicles, especially when it will essentially be a used car sale.

I've still not seen more than a handful of the R34 Skyline on the road over here, so whilst everyone has the cars on their wishlist, are many actually parting with their cash?

"you won’t be allowed to sell them on at less than UK list price"

PAH! If I buy a car then it becomes my private property and I can do what I like with it - I can sell it for 10p if I want to. If I go into business as a car importer then that's different, but I'm not a professional car importer so if I want to sell my car privately for £45000 then I can. Tesco selling Levi Jeans was different as they are a commercial entity.

Perhaps if Nissan don't want the market flooded with grey imports they could sell it with less than a £20000 mark-up on the Japanise price!

Still, if you want a free £10k you could always put a deposit on a UK registered GTR now. I guaruntee by the time they come out you'll be able to sell it for a BIG premium.

Hmm..Don't think this does Nissan any favours. If the car is essentially the same (I assume hardware is, just the usual grey import tweaking required) then why is there a £25K premium in the UK? The usual exchange-rate issues will, no doubt, be muttered.

Gotta say though that I love the styling - like an angry Godzilla. Shame they couldn't keep the original concept's stacked headlights, but apart from that; I'll take one in white please.

This is not just a Nissan thing, Over pricing of vehicles in the UK has been reported since time began. Import duties, exchange rate fluctuations will all be labelled as reasons but what about exclusivity? as Joff comments, you do not see many R32/33 or 34's on the road in the UK and this one will be no different. On that basis I would rather pay more in percentage terms on the GT-R than on a see it on every street corner 911!

Have you heard the one about the tyres?. If you have a puncture you just ca'nt tyre weld or put normal air into them oh no its got to taken to a dealer who supply the new tyre and fill the tyres with a mixture of air and nitrogen!- which apparently makes the wheels lighter!- wow! that'll be like the Bull then! and it will hurt- your wallet!.

Not in white thanks, and DEFINITELY not in silver, but wouldnt you just buy one to stick it up Porsche 911's.  No, given the cash, I'd buy one because it comes closer to 'difinitive' that anything I've ever seen.  Maybe except the McLaren F.1.

Have a girlfriend who privately imported a Nissan Skyline GT350.  It's nothing like the 350Z, more like a mini Maxima face, but has the same motor.  I got to chase her down a major arterial in Sydney, in her almost perfect unmolested 69K R.32 Bathhurst winning model GT-R.  After reading a local comparo between the R32, R33, R34, and the R35, it put 'awesome' into perspective for the R32.  She'll be flat out getting AU$20,000, [about 8,300 of your Pounds] for it though.  Is that over the odds in the UK?  I'm surprised they are so scarce.  Having enthusiastically driven this GT350, the new GT-R would have to be the adrenalin rush of the year.

We have had the same mutterings from Nissan in Oz about grey imports, and whether they have a bat in the cupboard, and how big it is, remains to be seen.  There are at least 6 new Godzilla's in Oz right now.

You may well complain about the in-yer-face gouging with the price of the GT-R in the UK.  In Oz, some simple conversions reveals it will cost the equivalant of UKPounds 66,000.  Must be because we are so bloody far down-under. :-)
