No debates, McLaren Automotive is great news for Britain

Chas Hallett
Here at the launch of the McLaren MP4-12C it’s easy to forget that we’re not just at the launch of the new supercar, but also a new car company.

So maybe it’s worth putting aside what we think of the looks of the car (a bit bland is my personal view) or whether the impressive technology it has will be enough to threaten the tough competition that Ferrari, Lamborghini and Mercedes represent.  And let's forget speculation on how good or bad it will be to drive, or even whether the McLaren brand has the provenenace with road cars, or even demonstrates the passion to compete with such illustrious rivals.

McLaren will only build sportscars

McLaren: "F1 boosts road car"

What I keep thinking about - whatever we end up thinking of the car, or whether it’s a commercial success - is that Ron Dennis and the team do deserve some recognition for launching a new independent car company on this scale. When was the last time this happened? Even more poignantly, when was the last time it happened in the UK?

In the spring of 2011 an all-new factory will open in Woking and a 1000 cars a year will initially start rolling off the line. By then a global network of dealers will be in place and the MP4-12Cs will start finding homes.

Ron Dennis is predictably bullish about the future too. "We know that lots of car companies have come and gone, and we’re not going to be one of them. We’re here to stay," he said.

I don’t yet know what the car is like  - or what the two other cars in development will be like. But Dennis can be truly proud of forming a new car company and it’s got to be good for the UK’s global engineering reputation.

Agree that the more serious move into road cars by McLaren is good news for UK motor industry, all be it that in global terms it is small scale.

McLaren's history of engineering expertise and experience in motorsport should stand it in better stead than other home grown car companies, particularly those on the high end of the market that have come and gone.

However, I really McLaren also needs to become an engine designer/developer to really gain a firm foothold in the market place.  I realise that other companies manage to plough on without being engine builders, e.g. Lotus, but I think that is to their detriment.

Still, full marks to McLaren if they make a success of the  MP4-12C. I just hope that Autocar, and other Brit mags, give us a truly unbiased comparison of the car with it rivals, and assess it purely on its merits, rather its importance to the UK motor industry.

Let's not be dishonest here - McLaren is already a world-known brand known for building racing cars and through its previous products it's not the first time that this brand has been used to sell road cars.  I'm guessing that it has benefited enormously from the experience gained from working with M-B, in much the same way that Lotus did from building cars for Opel / Vauxhall.  This is not the same as buiding a new company and I struggle to think of anyone else with a similar opportunity.

Whilst I'd like to think it would create a sea-change for UK manufacturing in financial terms I doubt it will make a huge difference.  The UK already has some of the world's best automotive engineering firms (Ricardo, Caparo, Lotus, Cosworth...) and its universities are well geared, on a european perspective, for idustrial collaboration.  Building the final product is not necessarily the only strategy, nor, if we are to be honest, always the most profitable.

From a consumer however this is a very good story.

yes, there are going to be a lot of consumers with £175,000 to spend on a car. Joe Public is going to benefit enourmously

pabs: "...Joe Public is going to benefit enourmously (sic)." If McLaren's customer service policy, engineering & manufacturing techniques filter down to mainstream car makers, then yes Joe Public will benefit. And if McLaren Automotive makes a decent profit, it all adds to 'UK plc'.

As for UK benefits I would also add the extra jobs at McLaren. Plus other key suppliers of which there are many, including, crucially, engine and gearbox manufacturers.
