Ferrari, powered by Rolls-Royce

Hilton Holloway
Recently, I spent the morning at Ferrari’s Modena plant partly because the company wants to make a point of its green credentials.

Ferrari has spent the last few years completely re-building Modena, not only installing smart new production lines but also new buildings that consume less energy and 4000sq meters of solar panels.

Ferrari 599 hybrid revealed

However, the Italians have gone one step further and built their own mini on-site power station, which provides not only electricity but also cooled water and super-heated water.

Hard-hated and ear-defended, we were allowed into the bowls of the Modena power station to see an extraordinary sight.

At the heart of the operation are two more-than-room-sized V20 (yes, that’s 20-cylinder) engines. Each motor measures in at 769-litres and churns out the equivalent of 23,000bhp.

Powered by gas (and started up with compressed air), these engines are built specifically for power generation, run at a constant 750rpm and are said to be among the most efficient internal combustion engines in the world.

However, despite them being sprayed Ferrari red, the engines are actually made by Rolls-Royce. (That’s the aero engine company, not BMW’s flagship auto brand).

So every Ferrari, including the on-site manufacturing of the whole engine, is built with power generated by Rolls-Royce. I really hadn’t expected that.

Intriguing as always

Hilton, I made this comment before - hope it didn't cause it to disappear:

"the engines are actually made by Rolls-Royce."

- no, not really.

The engine described aboved is a 'Bergen' engine, made, as I understand it, not in Derby(aero-engines) or UK even but funnily enough Bergen, Norway. Rolls-Royce plc only 'own' this engine by having acquired Vickers plc back in 1998, Vickers itself having acquired the Ulstein group of Bergen, Norway, some three months earlier in 1998. So it's a legacy of an acquisition, not a 'Rolls-Royce' product. If anyone knows this to be incorrect please correct me. It's hard to glean all the information on Ulstein Bergen pre RR's acquisition in 1998 as RR seem to have purged the internet of Bergen engines information prior to their ownership - how odd and telling.

Some information of the 'Bergen' Norwegian engine before 'Year Zero' 1998 and RR's corporate spiel from their website on the 'Bergen' gas engine below:

Hilton, your spelling is really awful especially considering you're a journalist.

noluddite March 5, 2010 7:31 AM

Yes. You're correct regarding his spelling. But it's still sad to read that he was hated at Ferrari.

And regarding the Bergen engine. Doesn't the fact that RR own the company, and brand it as such make it a RR product, irrespective of the company's history? After all, we didn't pooh pooh the Rover V8 as 'merely' a Buick engine.

This is nothing new i am afraid Hilton,

the system is called CCHP Combined cooling heat and power. (basically a combined heat and power unit connected to an absorption chiller to generate coolth)

I work for one of the leading small scale CHP manufactures in the uk, and we have energy centres at Jaguar Castle Bromwich, which is made up of 10No. 60l V16 engines,

There is a scheme at Land rover Solihull of 10No. 800kWe Engines

and another plant at Cowley MINI.

The first Jaguar engine went in over 10 years ago.

It is incredibly frustrating for us, because CHP is not new technology, the company i work for has been operating for over 25 years!

Finland generate over 50% of their energy in this manor, and in the uk its around 5%!!!!!

We are so far behind in this country!

CHP is one of, (if not the,) fastest ways of reducing CO2 output from a site, and is supported by Greenpeace. yet in this country, very few people know about it!!

Talksteer March 5, 2010 12:02 PM

CHP doesn't fare particulary well compared to using nuclear energy and then running a ground source heat pump from it.

Also on steam turbine systems (and combined cycle GTs) putting CHP systems on the rear generally harms the efficency of electricity production. In many circumstance it is more efficent to generate more electricity and then use that electricity to power a heat pump.

noluddite March 5, 2010 3:14 PM

CHP is about to take a huge leap forwards with a Calor designed system for domestic use. I can't wait.

HiltonH March 5, 2010 3:19 PM

'But it's still sad to read that he was hated at Ferrari.'

Where did you read that, Luddite?

noluddite March 5, 2010 6:20 PM

Para 4 second word.

HiltonH March 5, 2010 6:43 PM

Ah, fair point. Wonder why nobody here noticed it....

Unlikely the Italian lawmakers would allow an on-site nuclear power station to be built just to power Ferrari. The carmaker generates lots of cash and as putting it in a bank is now a good move now, better to spend it on something they know will save cash for the future. There is also better certainty about power supply when you create it on-site. Many of the large power users now are putting in their own power stations as they can run it cheaper than the state run power supplier who will always supply residential homes with power over industries if there is a power shortage. Mclaren users their local built lake to cool their building...

noluddite March 5, 2010 7:57 PM

Hilton. They did. See robinitaly comment prior to mine...

Hated at Ferrari maybe -- but what was he doing with their bowls?
