VW Scirocco R - why the dual-clutch makes sense

Matt Prior
I’ll confess to being less than the world’s biggest fan of dual-clutch gearboxes, but this week’s road test of the Volkswagen Scirocco R has reminded me that they do have their place.

Thus far I’ve only driven a manual Scirocco R (the road test one) but colleagues who have driven both all assure me that the automated DSG system is superior in this case.

Read the VW Scirocco R first drive

I can sort of understand why. This VW’s manual gearbox was on the looser side of things, which makes fast gearchanges in the Scirocco genuine punctuations in the performance; especially because while you’re off the throttle, the turbo has time to wind down, and it takes a pause before it winds itself back up again, turning acceleration into something of a succession of surges.

In the DSG equipped car you get far quicker, crisper shifts – accompanied, I’m told, by a meaty pop through the exhausts (though these I can take or leave if they’re ‘engineered’ in just for effect). And the engine stays on the boil.

Sometimes that’s what I dislike about twin-clutch gearboxes: that it turns driving into little more than a wheel-twiddling, paddle-flapping operation devoid of involvement. It’s all a bit sterile.

But in the Scirocco R’s case I’ll make an exception. Because where the manual Scirocco R tries to offer extra involvement, it falls a bit short. The DSG probably suits it entirely.

So perhaps your Blog should be entitled 'Its about time VW learned to make a decent manual box'

Its not as if for £30k your shouldnt expect one is it?

So you're recommending the DSG box not having actually driven it, and based on the fact that the standard manual is not very good.

My mate told me the DSG was well good innit, can I have a job at autocar too?

All Autocar road tests are a collective verdict derived from the views of all of our testers. Matt hasn't driven a DSG Scirocco R but most of us have and it's way better than the manual. In fact, I drove home in one tonight. It offers more fun and more exoticism than the standard car in our opinion. Shame that it adds over a grand to the bill though.

Chas and Matt,

Can you care to explain how the "R" was compared recently to the Focus rs and it was said to have MORE handling ability and now you reverse decision to the reverse, without telling your readers why? Is this level of writing in the tradition of journalism and automotive engineering?

Not sure where you got the phrase MORE handling ability in our comparison. If I recall we said that there are moments when the Scirocco can live with the Focus on a mountain road but in extremis the Ford still has the edge. However the all-round abilities of the VW gave it the test win. In other words, exactly what we conclude in the road test.

I'm sure the DSG is a great idea , but can VW make one that will last for 200K with only oil-changes and no other attention ?

Complete agree with artill's comment "So perhaps your Blog should be entitled 'Its about time VW learned to make a decent manual box'

The mechanical, delicious, rifle bolt gearchange in my Honda S2000 highlights how much more satisfying a good manual 'box is compared with these arcade game style DSGs... but then, VW have never made a particular good manual gearbox so why should they start now...?

You where I got the idea?.. from the article. It was written that the Scirocco is the better handling more precise car if less exciting.
