Counting the days to the Audi A1

Mark Tisshaw
Like all car fans, I love a good drool over a supercar. There’s always a bit of excitement when you read about a car such as the Lamborghini Murciélago SV or Ferrari California.

As much as I like looking at them and thinking about how good it would be to drive them, I wouldn’t necessarily like to own one. It just wouldn’t be practical.

See the full Audi A1 picture gallery here

Instead the cars I really admire are the three-door hatchbacks of this worlds, cars which are fit for meeting my needs and that are maybe not a million miles away from me being able to afford them.

One such car that fits this bill perfectly is the Audi A1 and I’ve been following news about it closely. When you look at in pictures, it’s hard to get an understanding of its size and it initially struck me as being only slightly smaller than an Audi A3 or a BMW 1-series.

I was even disappointed to think that Audi may have missed a trick in making a real premium alternative to a Mini. But I needn’t have worried, because when I saw the Metroproject Quattro for the first time at Goodwood I was very impressed.

To me, size and style-wise it’s like a cross between a Fiat 500 and a three-door Ford Fiesta; both good starting points in car design. The proportions looked just right and the styling was bold, especially with the bumpers, grille and the typically stylish Audi interior.

The engine range is also set to be appealing, too. The VW Group have some excellent powerplants at present, none more so than the 1.4-litre TSI. I’m sure this will compliment the A1 well and the car will be quick as well as desirable. There’s also talk of an S1 model, which would go head to head with the Mini JCW. That’s an Autocar group test I’d be very interested to read.

There is a point to my Audi A1 praise. This could be all the car someone like me could ever really need. With kids to worry about or a house to furnish with furniture from Ikea, this just leaves me only really caring about something that looks nice and is practical for my motorway and town driving and being able to fit a cricket bag in the boot. As much as I admire the Mini, its styling is hardly modern and revolutionary anymore.

Audi has pretty much nailed all the new markets it has tried its hand in in recent years, best highlighted by the R8. There’s certainly room for a bit of healthy Audi/Mini competition. I’m sure the Audi A1 won’t disappoint.

damn, we were so, so close to having an Audi free day and then...........BANG it all falls apart and this blog appears.

I'm a big Audi fan but the styling of the A1 does not appeal to me.  The proportions are not sporty at all.  The great thing about the Mini is its "wheels at each corner' look.  The Audi by contrast has a long front overhang that's typical of small hatches.  I'm sure the interior will be better than the Mini's and it will be nice to drive but overall, the A1 just doesn't have it in the looks department.

It's just the nose that does nothing for me, in any of the pictures I've seen.  May be it will be different in the flesh, but I am guessing not!

I have to agree with Vili. The front overhang looks way too long for a car so short. And rather than looking sporty it seems more 'bubble shaped' which would be backed up by you saying it resembles a Fiat 500. Ill reserve judgement until i actually see one but the photos do not create a good first impression.

A group test will be a good read but ultimately im sure Auotcar will compain about the lack of steering feel and stiff ride and declare the MINI to be the winner.

Note that the MINI does not carry a BMW badge. If Audi want us to consider it as a "premium" brand then it should stay away from cars as small as this. The aluminium A2 was a bit special and enhanced their reputation . This would not. The Mercedes brand has certainly not been enhanced by making "small" cars.

Hmmmm.

Come on, Autocar, try to be objective.

It is a restyled Polo (or is it Fabia or an Ibiza?) with a "typically stylish Audi interior"  or black as those of us who buy our own cars call it. And no doubt Audi's typical anaesthetised driving experience

Likely to cost, what, £3000 more than a Polo.

Why?

and why get excited about it?

Always disliked the current aggressive Audi grille, but on this disjointed little car, it just looks preposterously ugly.    Not a fan of Audi, but a few years ago they looked understated and modern.  Now they're just bling-encrusted chavmobiles.   This is a really horrible looking car.

It'll sell by the million.

The first step on the company car ladder for all those badge obssessed twenty-somethings with their boy-band haircuts and footballers suits.  Fresh from their Corsas and Saxos, I can't even begin to imagine how badly these will be driven...

The perfect car for middle class chavs looking to buy their princess a 17th birthday present. It'll look fantastic on the block paved drive next to the Range Rover Sport.

And as rogerthedodger says, what is it with the UK press and Audi interiors? They're dark, gloomy, and being a clinically German drab have all the charm of a mortuary slab.

Plus how many VAG group vehicles were spluttering about in the bottom ten of What Car?'s Reliability Supertest last year? One? Two? No... four. So much for being 'well screwed together', eh?

In case you hadn't guessed, it's a "no thanks" from me... and almost everyone else in this thread, apparently.

Looks like there'll be plenty of room for Noddy and Big Ears in that! Noddy will be trading in his little red car on the scrappage scheme and tootling down to the nice Audi dealer.......

It's awful.
