What's your guilty pleasure?

Staring at the sorry-looking prototype MG SV that is being put up for auction I felt compelled to laugh mockingly. It looked nothing more than a sad V8-powered nail that was driven into MG Rover’s coffin.

And then something strange happened – I realised I really want one of these cars. Even Autocar’s First Drive of “Britain’s answer to the Porsche 911” couldn’t recommend shelling out the £82,950 to get one on your drive.



It got me thinking about cars that for some irrational reason you would buy if your lottery numbers came up this Saturday, and you’ll probably be one of the only people who would.

The MG SV isn’t very good-looking, the wheels are too small, it was chronically overpriced, crude, and by today’s standards, underpowered. Why did MG give it carbonfibre panels and 375bhp, when a plastic body and 450bhp would have been cheaper and probably a lot easier?

Who knows, but if you want something different, this is the car – dare I say a British supercar that was wheeled out just as the UK car industry gasped its last breath. It’s so poignant it’s almost romantic. And after a while those looks even start to grow on you.

And the best bit? Consider for a moment Porsche’s approach to getting more performance from its cars: variable-vane turbos, “dynamic engine mounts’, direct injection. And what did MG consider for the SV? 1000bhp from “factory-approved” nitrous kits. 

All this amounts to a car that I would happily own, as long as I had plenty of money to buy a couple of Porsches too, of course.

I still can't quite believe those Punto 2 headlights. A slightly less impressive Skyline GTR for 3 times the price? No wonder nobody bought one back then. The Qvale Mangusta was an ugly beast but at least it looked exotic, not like this appalling Tokyo Drift wannabe.

I cant speak for its dynamic qualities but i think the SV looks brutally handsome and very purposeful. not classically beautiful but this motor will hold more long term appeal.

As for the headlights they are way too sexy for a little FIAT and sit on the front of the SV like they had been designed for it.

A ridiculous folly for a dying manufacturer though and the new price was also alarming.

Personally I always found it fuuny when you lifted the bonnet on them and there was a 'Powered by Ford' in raised black lettering on the intake manifold :O) They could have at least developed a half decent engine cover when they were doing the rest of the body.

As for guilty pleasure if my numbers came up? Well that would be here: www.superlitecars.com/coupe_spec.html

The people I know building them are putting the GM LS7 engine in them with the Ricardo Transaxle that was in the Ford GT. OK I know this would bump the price up to $70K, but at last years exchange rates that would have been close to the suggested price of the SV....

I'd love an SV! I inched past one on a windy country road once and it looked fantastic with great presence and a wonderful sound.

I agree with jonfortwo about the lights too.

My guilty pleasure would be an 80s/90s Maserati; Biturbo/Shamal/Ghibli/4porte, any of those!

The irrational choice would have to be a PGO (Peugeot 206 with a Porsche 356esque body).  Purely style over substance (although the style is questionable).  I have no idea why I'd have one of these, I just fancy one!

Geetee40, I'm shocked.  A GM engine?  Thought you were Ford through and through!  Nice car though.

Ever since I first clapped eyes on this when it was released as a concept I fell for its brutal looks straight away. In a strange way it reminded me of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage from the early 1990's. I've always wanted one, but I was put off by high price tag (not that I could afford to buy one anyway!), less than brutal performance and somewhat dubious fit and finish, but I guess the benefit of MG Rovers demise is that second hand prices are starting to look a bit tempting. I'm delighted that William Riley has bought the rights to the car - did anyone read the review that was in Auto Express last year? Will Autocar be doing a review soon?!

Doesn't the SV just sum up the whole MG Rover debacle? In  that they thought they could save the company and get people to buy them by churning out old metal with some rather nasty bodykits bolted on (except the cityrover, god knows why anyone at MGR thought they could sell that).

...even so and somewhat worrying, guilty pleasure MG ZT V8, preferably the one they made with 400bhp.

I am, and you know that; but you also know I also rate good well thought engineering. The new Ford modular block is too heaving and big.

GM in my opionion have done well in development of the compact pushrod... added to the fact that you can buy spares. Unlike buying an Audi V8 (they don't do replacement pistons etc)

I have to admit I am a bit biased by that car, as the person who designs and builds them is a friend of mine, an ex-pat, who used to work on NASCAR.

Anyway, once this one is finished (you know what I mean); am seriously considering starting the fund to do a MkIV with a proper big block. Fancy doing something funny like painting it in the JPS lotus scheme ;O)

For me it would have to be one of the 71 Bentley Continental Sedancas circa 1999 or an Azure Final Series from 2003

Lamborghini Miura SV every time for me!

As for that MG - didn't like it when it came out, don't like it now.  Ridiculous price tag for a luke warm car, even at the price it's likely to fetch now, still way more than it's worth, IMO.
