Terminal 5: why the fuss?

Matt Saunders

Good morning from the newest and most glassily transparent addition to the UK public transport network since St. Pancras has its Eurostar makeover: Heathrow Terminal Five.

We’re used to being at the front of the automotive news agenda – but it’s not often I find myself entangled in a story all over the national TV bulletins.

And I have to say – from today’s perspective at least – don’t believe the anti-hype. I can happily report that everything seems to be running normally. Expecting chaos after yesterday's cancelled flights and five hour delays I made sure I got here in plenty of time. I needn’t have hurried though, there seem to be no theme park sized queues and I breezed through check in and security with barely enough time to take it all in.

But I can see what all the fuss was about. This place would appear to have everything the 21st century traveler could want. It’s airy, clean and well staffed. There's even a Sony store and a Gordon Ramsay eaterie for goodness sake.

As a car nut it's tempting to assume that any means of transport other than the car is second rate. But as of yesterday flying BA from Heathrow certainly isn't. Here's hoping it does us all a favour and takes a few hundred thousand drivers off UK roads every year.

If I remember rightly, it started when BA humbly admitted they were holding everyone up. So they built Terminal 5 to get them out of way. :)

Is it April 1 already? Or is yer man here on a retainer from the wee fella at BA, Willie Walsh?

Leave the pap, puff-piece propaganda, especially on non-car matters, to the likes of the licence fee-tax-funded airheads at Radio 5Live.

Mat, you say 'no theme park sized queues' but how long will that last after the PR parties have died down? Govt loves to waste peoples time in congestion and achieiving nothing (60million pairs of shoes taken off and put back on, for no f'ing good reason, gives the lie to any system griding to a halt under Govt management).

You say 'everything the 21st century traveler could want'. Has it got smoking areas for the 20% of the population that likes to have a ciggy?
