Ban on smoking in cars is long overdue for motorcyclists

Colin Goodwin

The ban on smoking in cars does not come soon enough. Many years ago I was travelling in the passenger seat of a friend’s 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood when I lobbed a nearly dead JPS (the tab of choice for any Ronnie or Mario fan) out of the window.

Several minutes later there was a nasty burning smell from the back of the Caddy. The butt had blown back in the rear window and set alight to the shagpile carpet. My pal was not amused.

The other curse of smoking in cars is the effect it has on motorcyclists. Any biker of long experience will have had the very frightning experience of having a smouldering stub of a *** blow into his crash helmet. Car drivers who lob fags out of the window without looking in the mirror first are almost as annoying as those drivers who squirt their windscreens before first looking to see if there’s a biker behind. At night you have more of a chance of dodging a butt because they show up like tracer, but that alone is no reason to continue to let drivers puff away at the wheel and then flick their ends anywhere they feel.

I gave up smoking many years ago so no longer follow the subject, but just as a matter of interest, is there anywhere one is still allowed to smoke?

About Colin Goodwin

Our agony uncle joined us in 1996. He's a veteran of the odd hair-raising stunt and road trip, but is now more likely to be found asleep underneath his Porsche 911 or his Merc 280SL.

Agreed Colin, but as well as feeling sorry for the poor bikers, what about the other road users - surely a driver cannot be in full control of the vehicle whilst holding lit paper?

I remember an uncle driving us in his MGB and dropping a lit cig onto the drivers seat - I don't think they came with ABS, but the sight of him jumping out of the car in the middle of a dual carriageway  - funny to a seven year old, but really looking back very very bad form indeed!

Can't agree more with you both !   What can be more dangerous than someone trying to avoid a child on a bike with something on fire between their fingers !!!!!

I'm no 'green' /killjoy - I drive Boxster S, Focus ST and 205 GTI 1.9 - but smoking a cigarette whilst driving is surely not acceptable.   If they want to ban anything -0 ban this !

Oh dear I do hope the 'lets ban everything brigade' doent get to Autocar as well. Far too many things are now banned and smoking in a car is hardly a big issue and one of the few places that you can smoke.

If anything is dangerous in cars its probably Sat nav, Audi lent me a new A6 for the last 5 weeks and I loved watching the colour map identify all the little roads in my area but to be honest it very distracting and caused a few near misses.

Absolute Total Rubbish.

Traffic is safe and accidents rare.. so to try and relate any of thos accidents to smoking is like trying to split hairs with a banana.

If you think Govt should legislate without a very good reason(out of personel prejudice) then you're not only twisted but on the slippery slope to Big Brother.

The pompous self righteous attitudes shown here impinge on other peoples rights. The anti-smoking attitudes here are an absolute disgrace.
