Jaguar Land Rover workers agree to four-day week and pay freeze

Workers at Jaguar Land Rover have voted in favour of a four-day working week in an effort to save jobs. Company managers proposed the package as a way of cutting costs (by £70m) and retaining skilled factory workers during the recession.

In exchange for voting for the shorter week and a complete pay freeze, JLR employees have received a guarantee that there will be no compulsory job losses for two years.

UK car sales dropped by 22 per cent last month, compared with February 2008. New car registrations fell to 54,359.

Jaguar has bucked the trend selling 1533 cars so far this year, a 65 per cent rise on the same two-month period in 2008, when it sold 930 vehicles.

"We're pretty bullish about the market situation," said a Jaguar spokesman. "Our 2008 sales were up nine per cent and we did pretty well by putting the diesel auto into the X-type range."
