Survey shows motorists want middle-lane hogs to be prosecuted

Drivers who sit in the middle lane of the motorway should be prosecuted by the police, a survey of nearly 2000 drivers has found.

Of those surveyed, 73 per cent said they thought police should tackle so called ‘middle-lane hogs’.

Figures from the RAC claim that the equivalent of up to 700 miles of motorway are lost during peak periods because of drivers sitting in the middle lane when the inside lane is empty.

The police have the power to stop drivers for poor lane discipline and can prosecute a driver for inconsiderate driving.

The Highways Agency ran campaigns in 2005 and 2008 using the variable message signs on motorways to tell drivers to keep left.
