High-quality interior marks out next-gen Legacy

Subaru has unveiled its new Legacy concept here at the Detroit motor show, celebrating twenty years since the original model went on sale.

The company says the real Subaru Legacy, which is due to arrive in showrooms early next year, will stay true to this concept model's look. It's a four-door saloon with more sweeping lines than its predecessor and a flashier front grille that's been conceived to give the car more 'presence'.

The concept Legacy is powered by Subaru's 3.6-litre boxer six-pot and has all-wheel drive. When the real thing comes to Europe expect the firm's world-first boxer diesel to be the big seller.

A typically lavish conceptual interior is focused around an unconventional cylindrical centre console. There are deep-set binnacle dials and high-quality materials used all round, something that insiders at Subaru tell us is a key point of focus for the real car.

Subaru will be hoping the new Legacy can substantially add to the 3.6 million examples it has already sold worldwide over the last 20 years.
