Most frugal version yet of new Audi A1 has 99g/km CO2 emissions and 74.3mpg combined economy

Audi has launched this revised version of its Audi A1 1.6 TDI, which cuts CO2 emissions below 100g/km for the first time.

Its 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI engine, mated to a five-speed manual ‘box, has undergone a series of revisions to help cut its CO2 output from 105g/km to 99g/km and boost fuel economy from 70.6mpg to 74.3mpg.

Those CO2 and economy figures match those of the most frugal version of the larger Audi A3 1.6 TDI, which is equipped with the same direct-injection, common-rail engine. The CO2 output is also low enough for the car to qualify for exemption in London’s congestion charge zone and from VED from year two onwards under current ratings.

The fuel-sipping A1 is capable of 0-62mph in 10.5sec and a top speed of 118mph.

The engine is available to order with all three of the A1’s trim levels: SE, Sport and S Line. Standard equipment includes stop-start, alloys, air-con, ESP and a CD player. Prices start from £14,480 for the SE and rise to £17,865 for the S Line.

Audi has also confirmed plans to launch a 201bhp front-drive 3.0-litre TDI version of the A8 later this year with CO2 emissions of just 159g/km and 47.1mpg combined fuel economy.

The Audi A1 is a stylish and competent supermini, if a little expensive - but does it have the edge over the Mini hatch, Seat Ibiza and Ford Fiesta?
