New 2.2-litre CRD Merc-sourced engine replaces the current VW 2.0-litre unit

Jeep has announced a new diesel engine for its Patriot SUV.

The 2.2 CRD Mercedes-sourced engine replaces the current VW 2.0-litre unit offering an increase in power of 23bhp and and a 7lb ft hike in torque.

Performance figures for the Patriot include a top speed of 125mph and 0-60mph time of 10.7secs. The company claims a combined fuel economy of 42.8mpg.

Available in four trim levels – Sport, Sport+, Limited and Overland – all now feature hill start assist and active head restraints, with the Sport+ version adding cruise control, tinted windows and Bluetooth over the base Sport model. The top of the range Overland includes leather seats, 18-inch alloys and park assist.

Jeep recently unveiled details of its 2011 Patriot, including exterior updates such as revised front and rear fascia. Prices for the Patriot start from £14,995 for the 2.4-litre Sport petrol, rising to £21,995 for the 2.2 CRD Overland.

I suppose 'emissions' would have been a better term than 'economy', as the new Mercedes unit drops 13 points on the What Green Car environmental damage scale compared to the old VW unit. CO, HC, NOx and PM are all down dramatically hence the EU5 certification.

I quite fancy one, as it's a nice compact size and looks nice and chunky. It certainly has more visual appeal than a Skoda Yeti!

I think the old one was pretty efficient to be honest. I think where this one scores is that it is much quieter than the old one.

Towing capacity is up by a third as well which is pretty good.
