New Passat range priced ahead of January launch; three petrol and three diesel engines offered

Volkswagen’s new Passat saloon will cost from £18,470, the company has confirmed.

Estate models will cost from £19,745; the order books for the new models, revealed at the Paris motor show last month, open from tomorrow ahead of the first cars being delivered in January.

Buyers can choose from three petrol engines and three diesels, including a 104bhp 1.6 TDI unit with 65.7mpg and 114g/km CO2 emissions. Transmission options include a six-speed manual, six- or seven-speed DSGs and a six-speed automatic.

All diesel models get stop-start and an energy recuperation system as standard. A 68.8mpg, 109g/km Bluemotion model will join the saloon range early next year.

Three trim levels are offered: S, SE and Sport. All models get an iPod interface, six airbags, ESP, a leather multifunction steering wheel and increased sound deadening as standard. SE models get an eight-speaker digital radio, a driver fatigue detection system and Bluetooth connectivity, while Sport models get a new touchscreen sat-nav system.

The best seller is expected to be the 138bhp 2.0 TDI model in SE trim, priced from £21,562.40. For the first time, estate models are expected to outsell saloons by 53 per cent to 47.

The VW Passat is a competent family car - but does it show any flair, and does it stand out amongst established executive saloons from BMW, Audi and Mercedes?

Well, Steve Cropley said that the its more of the same and all the better for it and I agree. For some reason a lot of people get snooty about the Passat and have a downer on it, but I have owned an 03 reg 1.8T one now for over a year and have found it to be the most comfortable and satisfying car to own, of all my cars! Now that may say something about me getting to middle age and becoming an old fart, but its actually refreshing that VW are continuing to offer something unpretentious, with no sporting intentions and set up to be comfortable and effortless to drive!

My dogs produce something much better looking twice a day each..would not want to be seen stepping in that, and would not want to be seen sitting in this!!
