Volvo has launched a facelifted version of the C30 drive at the Frankfurt motor show.

Unlike the regular C30, the Drive model doesn’t get the new sports chassis but its CO2 emissions have been cut to 99g/km of CO2 meaning it qualifies for free road tax in the UK. The model it replaces emitted 104g/km.

The Swedish firm claims it can travel up to 857 miles on a single tank of fuel and return 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Power comes from 1.6-litre diesel engine, which is equipped with a start/stop system to help improve economy and reduce emissions.

Other tweaks to help boost economy include improvements in the engine management and combustion technology.

Peter Ewerstrand, head of CO2 at Volvo, said: “For the first time in Volvo's history we have a car that emits only 99 grams of CO2 per km. We've left absolutely no stone unturned in our determination to reach this target, and it's wonderful that we have succeeded.”

Volvo has also launched the regular C30 and its R-Design variant at Frankfurt, as well as a new facelifted C70.
