Volkswagen has decided on a name for its upcoming compact SUV, which is to be called the Tiguan.

The name was developed by Volkswagen, along with the alternatives Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun, and voted on by 350,000 people across 10 countries.

The new 4x4 is to be produced in Wolfsburg and will be launched in 2008, following the success of VW’s larger Touareg SUV. VW says the Tiguan has been designed to be as much at home in urban environments as in the wilds of the countryside, with an emphasis on driving dynamics and comfort.

A hint of the Tiguan’s styling was given in the Concept A design study shown at the start of the year.
