The new Volkswagen Golf has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP occupant protection, the highest possible result.

The sixth generation of VW’s family hatch scored four and three stars in child safety and pedestrian safety respectively, putting it on an equal Euro NCAP rating to the new Peugeot 308 in all categories.

A high level of standard safety equipment helped achieve the result, including ESP, seven airbags, whiplash-reducing headrests, side impact protection and the strongest chassis yet fitted to a Golf.

However, the 308 isn’t the only strong competition the Golf must take on. The new Renault Megane has yet to be tested, but it is predicted to maintain Renault’s famously competitive safety score.

Equally, the Ford Focus boats a decent Euro NCAP rating, with five-star adult passenger protection, four stars for child protection and two stars for pedestrian protection.

The latest Golf has been available to order since 17 October, with deliveries starting on 6 January next year. The good Euro NCAP rating will be welcome news to Volkswagen, which is hoping to sell between 50 and 60,000 units of its iconic hatch in 2009.
