The entry-level Volkswagen Fox, with the familiar 55bhp 1.2 litre engine, will combine comfort levels claimed to match the class above with power steering, a CD player, ABS, twin airbags as standard – and the lowest possible insurance rating of 1E when it goes on sale on January 16.
Prices start at £6595, but if you want such refinements as body-coloured bumpers or remote central locking, you must choose the higher-spec Urban Fox, priced from £7395, which is still only insurance group 2E.
Other engine options are the 75bhp 1.4 petrol and 70 bhp 1.4 TDi. The Fox’s looks are a quiet and pleasant evolution of VW’s current look, though more reminiscent of the Polo than the distinctive wheel-at-each-corner chunkiness of the Lupo.
But a small VW is nothing if not backed up by Germanic build quality and durability: VW points to the galvanised steel body and extensive use of laser welding in the Fox’s chassis. The crash test results from German motoring body ADAC have been impressive: using EuroNCAP criteria, the points they awarded to the Fox are the equivalent of four stars out of five in the EuroNCAP test.
